I found a GREAT water sharpener, it’s made by a company called bucktool. Paid $145 shipped. The jigs aren’t the best, so I bought the tormek ones and they fit beautifully. The tormek jigs cost more than the machine but they’re awesome. The whole kit cost me about $250, and it’s so good!

40 cents less on the dollar. 80 cents less is on two dollars. Still the lowest in decades. I got a #7 Elwell head earlier this year for under $100. Delivered. Part of that was luck, but a lot of it was the exchange rate. Cheers from Kennesaw
@urbanlumberjack2 күн бұрын
From Kennesaw, that’s awesome! I DEFINITELY could be thick headed, but I meant the conversion rate was about $2.05/1 In 2007, but today it’s only $1.23/1, making about an .80 cents difference today versus 2007.

How do I know what tools are quality UK made tools?
@urbanlumberjack2 күн бұрын
From what I’ve seen and used virtually ANY tool made in the UK before maybe the 1980s is awesome. Lots more after that are good but need to be more selective. In particular look for MADE in Sheffield, not just “Sheffield” like the company is based there but imports from somewhere else. They got tricky with that Sheffield name at some point. Bottom line if it looks old and well used it’s probably quality. The older the better

Dude, you had me there for minute! I’m like “what, he got another tomohawk?” Anyway, really cool unboxing. I picked up one after your first video and it’s been great. Just like you, l said, super light weight and handy. Not a bad thrower either. I think I still prefer the Flying Fox as a general purpose hatchet for working around the house. But I’d definitely rather hike with the hawk. And the slip fit head has got to be better if you break a handle in the woods, right? In theory you could throw it on any stick that’s strong enough until you carved a proper handle.
@urbanlumberjack2 күн бұрын
That’s awesome! Yeah this is a video I’ve been trying to make for so long! I really like the flying fox too. The slip fit handles are super nice, a lot lighter than Hickory for hiking. Definitely easy to make a replacement handle, could do it with even just the head if the handle totally breaks. Really good thrower, too. The shape of the head helps with rotation to land row first. Great axe thanks for the comment!

It's very nice to find a guy selling products with integrity and passion. Seems obvious he actually cares about tools. As you know I've had a bad experience. I don't really buy products that are new but it's great to have a good option. As enthusiasts we are responsible for who we tell others to buy from. Forget about reputation, I feel terrible when I lead someone astray. That's why I criticize the handle of the Fiskars x27. A lot of people don't like it but it's important to talk about the basics and the small details. If we are going to be consumers it's best to be well informed. Great video. I really like that like slip fit! The wide bit is much better than the super narrow bit of something I saw from cold steel which is basically not made for anything other than show.

I’ve got the Rinaldi America. The weight is only about 2.5 pounds but the blade is huge in comparison to axes of a similar weight. It’s great for limbing! Another great advantage for Rinaldis is to have multiple handles for the same axe head. La Cognée is a great shop! I got mine from there too.

That’s definitely a big advantage! So easy to slip on a longer or shorter handle. I’ll look into that America, for sure looks perfect for limbing

Ngl looks sped up which makes me question if you trued it for too long. That can dull the grains inside the stone :) not an expert could be wrong but I’ve heard and seen a stone be squared up and f’fresh’ but grind/cut poorly due to dullness
@blakestrike39054 күн бұрын
Also what compound is that wheel? Silicates?😊
@urbanlumberjack4 күн бұрын
I’m definitely still learning on the machine. The manual says the truing jig can be used to make the cut more aggressive by spinning fast, so it makes sense going slow would make it cut less aggressive. I’m not an expert by any means, so take that with a grain of salt. Not sure exactly what the stone is, it seems to cut well. I do rough up the stone every now and then with the dressing stone they provide. It has a coarse and a medium grit side.

That’s so true! This Very new machine for me, and I first tried to try the stone by hand. Tried EVERYTHING to get it flat but even a bit out splashed water and ground uneven. Finally bought the Tormek truing jig (cost 70 percent of the machine!), and made a world of difference.

@urbanlumberjack I program and operate big 5 axis CNCs for countertops. Tooling and maintenance of tooling is so important. There is a new Italian machine called Zares, and it is a game changer when it comes to tools. It's essentially a microscope for tools that sends out tool data to the CNCs. It's 70k, but in the year we have had, it has paid for itself in profiles. It would be a big change, but I may do a video on it just to show people.

Nice job! Was that a poplar wedge? I have found they compress well into kerfs that are slighty damaged in rehafting.

It is poplar! That’s exactly why I went with it over a harder wood. You can see just a bit of the old hang in the kerf, but it is very solid

Yeah, I'll absolutely use poplar when extreme compression is needed due to fitment or being a rehaft.

@urbanlumberjack7 күн бұрын
This is the regular. Looks very similar to the Velvicut after polishing
@cranberrysmoothie17 күн бұрын
@@urbanlumberjack I just got the Woodcraft Camp Carver and the finish looks similar to the finish on their regular line even though it's made of 5160. My other Velvicut axes look more polished than the Sport Utility finish on the regular axes made with 1060 or 1080 steel. It's interesting they decided to leave them raw after tempering instead of polishing them. Maybe even though it's made of 5160 it isn't technically a Velvicut.
@urbanlumberjack7 күн бұрын
As I understand it the Velvicut is its own line and is fully polished. The woodcraft line is the camp carver and pack axe, and they have a half polish. Personally I prefer the half polish but understand a lot of people like the full polish. It’s still 5160! Really good steel.
