It's funny that through many acquisitions that Sierra and id Software would eventually have the same owner. Microsoft now owns both even though Sierra only exists as IP.

Serria shut down shortly after the Merger ov Vevendi and Activision on July 10, 2008 they were still a group under the previous company Activision did revive the brand for reissues of there old games in 2014 ironically they use the Historic Infocom name plate the same way on legacy reissues of old games by that studio.

Roberta and Ken Williams have been living the life after Sierra.

Man, I love your videos, but I miss a low spec gamer's channel now on this steamdeck era...

Great piece overall, and I love all the CG and animation. But one nitpick at 5:10. In 1979 Infocom developed their Z-interpreter for text adventure games, predating Ken & Roberta's work by a bit - although it's probably an example of parallel development. (Also, Infocom would be a *fantastic* subject for one of these videos in the future.) And it's fascinating to think what might have happened, if Sierra had made that deal with Id. Because that would have given Sierra access to IdTech, and might have sent them down a totally different development path. Imagine if Kings Quest 7 had been made in the Doom engine!

Activision aquired Infocom so Microsoft owns Zork, kings quest, Pitfall, Doom, Commander Keen, Overwatch, deadly tide, flight simulator, and minesweeper. The Xbox equilivent to smash Brothers is going to rock

Tom Hall wanted to make Commander Keen in ID Tech 1 but was shot down. They knew better than to take that deal because Apogee gave cash deals and let developers keep there IP and the Apogee Model and Wolfenstine 3D got Carmack a Lamborghini

What a terrible way to loose all of your work, Growing up I played a few Serra game and enjoyed a bunch of them. I always wondered what happened to them, now I know. What is the name of their new studio? Would love to see what they come up with next.
@jasonblalock4429Күн бұрын
Their new company is called Cygnus Entertainment, although so far the only game they've published is Roberta's remake of Colossal Cave Adventure. I've also heard that they're helping the Two Guys fix up the rather infamous SpaceVenture project for a full release, although I'm not sure if that's true or a rumor.

Sierra games defined so much of what was gaming for me growing up. Police Quest Kings Quest Space Quest Leisure Suit Larry (despite being far too young to get a lot of the jokes… not sure how I convinced my parents playing those games was OK) Thanks for the story of the business behind all those memories!

Serria was technically killed by the merger with Activision in 2008, Vivindi had kept them as a programing group, the brand was reactivated by Activision Blizzard in 2014 to use on releases of old games by Serria also it's likely some legal team members told them that they had to use the brand or they lose it. They might have technically lost the Infocom brand from lack of use beyond the Zork collections
