I knew one of the ex IBM VP's, there were a lot of them. He said they let all vendors sell their products to other vendors to avoid anti-trust issues, and Gates was well aware of this when he pitched PC-DOS because they had already finalized all contracts for BASIC. He said IBM wasn't concerned about anti trust in making their own OS, but they knew it would take years for IBM to create an OS, and he was correct it took a decade. IBM really should have used their own chip design. They were set up to produce chips, and could have delayed 6 months and started with a 16 bit design.. People forget how small INTEL still was at this time, and it's pretty amazing that they were able to scale up to demand.
@phill685911 сағат бұрын
It wasn't just development time. They wanted two sources for all components and they needed to be available so that people could repair them. Because they wanted computer stores to recommend their computer, which they would do if they could repair them. Intel had been making a lot of 8085 for embedded use, so they were quite big. But the IBM PC took a while to really take off

I hope nobody else uses books and stories from the 20th century as sources for the Gary Kildall story. It's really sad to see that old narrative about the plane flight repeated here in 2024. There are better sources with more of the story and context now, that make it more clear he wasn't incompetent, arrogant or flippant about the IBM opportunity.

DRI were incompetent and arrogant for not releasing CPM86 in the three years since the 8086 came out. They were wrong for not signing the NDA and wrong for not reducing the price of CPM.

All the talk about an extended 32-bit bus that would be backwards compatible with ISA, and I was surprised to see it was EISA with no mention of VLB or how PCI eventually won. The PC Personal Computer wasn't invented by IBM; back in the mid-late 70s companies like Apple and hobbyists did it before IBM. Late on in the early 80s companies like IBM and Commodore got into the PC market to cash into it.

Olivetti (that we'll see at the end of the vide as a member of the ISA consortium) had been so many times incredibly close to, yet incredibly distant from, seriously competing with IBM: In 1982 they released the M20, quite close to what a Z8000 powered PC would have been like. Actinometry made a nice video about the early history of Olivetti computers in the 60s and 70s; sure, the last attempt at competing in the 80s and 90s are a sadder story, but may be worth telling.

IBM shot themselves with the Microchannel. If sucessful, all they would have accomplished is the division of the PC industry in half. But the greatest strength of the IBM-PC was open architecture, so IBM didn't learn from their own success. EISA didn't work. Few cards were produced, and few computers used the standard. Intel instead backed the PCI bus, and EISA disappeared like mushrooms after a summer rain. The only cards that really NEEDED something better than the ISA bus were graphics cards, and they went with the VESA standard bus, which was completely different from anything, including MCA and ISA busses... but worked and bridged the industry to the PCI bus. In retrospect, IBM did everyone a great favor by introducing the MCA bus. It was a left turn that IBM was saying follow us or follow them. And the answer was to follow them. It put the final stamp of approval on the IBM-PC clone market.

Been a while since I learned anything from one of these tech history videos. Too many focus on the MS/IBM deal. Somehow missed (or forgot) how important Compaq's role was. Had no idea about IBM using off the shelf components, nor how critical the bus was. Always knew that OS2 was their failed response to the threat of MS-DOS, but missed the core hardware difference.

Gary Kildall invented the PC when he discovered an Intel CPU made for use in appliances could be capable of doing so very much more. RIP Gary
@hyoenmadanКүн бұрын
Not really... CP/M wasn't widely running in the 8086 for some time. It wasn't when IBM people went to them at least. Gary had preference to other CPU architectures to run CP/M, like the z80 or the 68k. But I feel every Yt "mainstream" channel who talks about the subject always tries to whitewash on BillG and MS, and throws dirty on Gary or Gary's wife. No one takes in count the existing connections which BillG parents had in the government and IBM to get their rich son a better deal than a 3rd party to the "powers" like Gary would ever get. Is very well known BillG mother had relationship certain IBM people. Is easy to blame Gary's wife when no one read wth was written in that IBM contract. Anyways, I don't expect a mainstream monetized channel with an alternate channel in nebula to talk about such subject.

IBM didn't really invent anything. They just assembled a standard kit of parts and used their market power to get it accepted. The thing that was different from other suppliers is they had the market power to establish a standard. The design of the original PC was actually quite poor and underpowered.
