Hi, great info. About how long did it take you to go up and over Osborn mountain?
@topshotrhit3 ай бұрын
I suppose it depends on where you consider "over". :) Maybe an hour at most from the saddle to the very top plateau, an hour across the plateau and maybe a couple hours back to Green River since I didn't hit the trail I'd hoped for and ended up bushwhacking a bit more.

Not only is this an incredible video and accomplishment, but it is so uncanny; my wife, daughter, and I also listen to the LOTR soundtrack (as well as the audiobooks) when we hike, camp, and fish in the winds!

How long did your tent last or hold up? Could you use this a a tarp for a hammock on backpacking trips?
@topshotrhit Жыл бұрын
I could still use it. I don't get to backpack a lot but would expect it would last maybe 100 nights. It likely depends on the winds and sun experienced. I would just keep checking for damage of any kind to the tape and tieoff points as those are the key elements. Of course, if you don't take care of it all bets are off as polycryo will catastrophically fail if torn/punctured so if you just jam it in your pack with stakes or snag it on a branch while unfurling you're likely going to have to bail. As for hammocking, I believe those generally are larger tarps so if you used the full size sheet in an A-frame like the article I linked in the description it may work out for that.

There's no drought... These people are lying... They're DRAINING lakes across the Globe.... Leftist new world order devils ... Litmus Test proving this? Ask this donkey how the next 2 lakes down stream have been at full pool this entire alleged drought period... Havasu, 2 lakes down stream, isn't just full pool, but it releases 4x it's capacity annually.... "Read that again... 4x it's capacity is released".... That's criminal activity.

Hi. Nice video ! Very thorough and nice views ! I m headed here for a 1 nighter in October. Is the trail well blazed or do you rely heavenly on an app/map. Just getting prepped so I know what to expect. Thanks !
@topshotrhit3 жыл бұрын
It is blazed, which isn't really necessary IMHO, since it follows the ridgeline. There were a few intersections but it would be immediately obvious that you weren't continuing along the ridge. I always take map and compass anyway, but we only used them to find my parents' house on a nearby mountain and check progress. The hardest part was knowing precisely where the "alternate" parking lot at the northern TH was since we missed seeing the small sign. The other thing was not finding the spring at Deep Gap that some seemed to have used. There was a really small and slow one maybe 50 yards down the trail going down the east side of Deep Gap, but it was a pain to use so I'd just carry what you need for the night.
@jamesgaffney1063 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it. We are headed up in 3 weeks nailing down the itinerary. Was that camping area you were at Deep Gap ? Where the fire pit was. We plan to camp there it just looks as though it doesn’t really hold that many tents if it is deep gap
@topshotrhit3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesgaffney106 Yes, that was Deep Gap. There aren't a lot of spots. Ironically, the best spot is in the no camping zone on the south side of the gap. I'd say the spot we picked was nice except for being right off the trail, but you're pretty limited when on a ridgeline. There was a jeep trail heading SW that you could put a bunch of tents on and a larger group we had passed did end up there. Maybe a couple spots very close to the intersection of the trail with the tiny spring.

How were the skeeters?
@topshotrhit5 жыл бұрын
If I didn't comment on them in the video they must not have been too bad. I recall having them in a few spots but nothing out of hand. Looks like my son wore a headnet at least twice. My first 2 Winds trips were the thickest. Of course, we purposely wear clothing to protect from skeeters and sun, too, so you'd likely look like a buffet nearly any time if you were in shorts and a t-shirt. ;)

Great video and narration. I’m trekking from Green River Lakes up Highline Trail then over Clark’s Creek Trail to Porcupine Trail back to starting point. July 2019. Probably bout 32 miles. Can you give me info on your tent? Looks lightweight. Also info on mosquitos. Did a trek in Big Horns and skeeters drove me crazy
@topshotrhit5 жыл бұрын
John, See kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqaWpYhsrJ2cbbc (incl link in description) and kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWGZeomiiplprqc I believe the one shown here was a bit larger (~9x7) but had been damaged somewhat (left in sun while all bunched up which greatly increased the heat and shrunk and distorted the film in some places) which is why it was not very taut. Shrinkage/distortion wouldn't be an issue normally. Just be familiar with the risks of polycryo. I was prepared to bail at any time if it should fail for some reason. As for skeeters, they can be pretty bad in the Winds, depending on location and time of season. I'd expect July would be worst in most years so definitely take a headnet and a tent with mesh or bivy if possible. If you look WAY back in my vids, you'll see my first trip (and I think the second also) used a tarp that I had sewed mesh walls that kept them at bay. This trip was late enough they weren't a big deal. I ran into them in some places and not others but couldn't see a pattern (i.e., elevation, water, etc).

How do you get to the Ute Creek trail head?
@topshotrhit6 жыл бұрын
From Highway 24 at Lake George, travel north on Country Road 77 (Tarryall Road) for about 20 miles. The trailhead is on the right side of the road. There was plenty of paved parking. If you get to the small reservoir you can see on the map you went about 3 miles too far.

Just be prepped for the steep climb and descent!
@russlehman2070 Жыл бұрын
@@topshotrhit If coming from Denver, County Road 77 can be accessed from US 285 at Jefferson. The loop can also be accessed from the Lost Park Trailhead, which requires driving about 20 miles of gravel road (good enough for most passenger cars), but avoids the steep climb and descent from the Ute Creek Trailhead.
