What is Kevin's background with swimming training like this? How did you get him on the same page and find a strength coach you could trust to get what you need or learn what is specific to swimming?

Kevin doesn't have any prior experience with swimming, but he knows movement, so I tell him the movements that are important for me and he prescribes the lifts that target those.

Great lifts 👍 I love the trap bar deadlift too - way less technically demanding than a conventional deadlift. Simpler exercises for those of us that lift weights for athletic purposes are generally better.

I'm curious about how to apply the "less is more" to the 400 and 200 IM training. That is what I train. 3 days in the pool, 2 in the weight room. Great vlogs! Regards.

Just curious, I know you explained your reason for not going full depth on bench press, but ever given any thought to just working up to full ROM with lighter weights to build comfort level at that deeper ROM? You'd likely get notably stronger if you spent time doing sets of 6-8 full ROM with 225. Alternatively, could always use heavy dumbbells, which are typically gentler on the shoulders, even at full ROM. Just curious to get your perspective.
@seanmurphy55
@seanmurphy55 17 күн бұрын
he explained the answer to this in the video pretty well? 1:08 Remember this is supplemental work for the pool, his ultimate objective is to swim fast, not to be as big and strong as possible. He felt lifting heavy did something good for him in the pool, why not do more!!? He is consciously lifting in a way that is heavy, explosive, stroke specific, and safe for his joints. Correct me if i am wrong, but the trend for lifting is getting more and more swim specific and less traditional. I mean this topic is a great example of what Fike preaches is it not...swim different! James, video idea: 1. explain your weight lifting journey 2. why you lift the way you do now and its benefits 3. why conventional strength training may not be the best option for most serious swimmers 4. why different swimmers might have different weight programs, even those swimming the same event? Convince them Fike, convince them that less system fatigue means better pool training, convince them of sport and induvial specificity, Swim different!! Swim different 100 years!! swim different!!!
@MTK9209
@MTK9209 17 күн бұрын
@@seanmurphy55 I heard and acknowledged his explanation. In your second sentence though - I disagree. His objective is to swim fast yes, and size isn't the ultimate goal, but being as strong as possible at a given body weight ultimately is a big part of what accomplishes the objective of swimming fast. As long as the swimmer is avoiding injury and not losing joint mobility, it's a decent bet that the swimmer benching 325 with full ROM will be faster than if they can only do it with partial ROM. The strength needed to press the bar up from chest height is simply greater than from 2-3" above the chest - greater motor unit recruitment. This is a big "if" though I acknowledge - some people's shoulders have a harder time tolerating a deep ROM bench press, though this begs the question if this is the best exercise in the first place for the athlete in question.

@@MTK9209 You are absolutely right, I myself have increased my pushing with your exact proposed plan and it is excellent advice. Your proposed less weight, more reps, full rom could be great for James's shoulder strength and his confidence in them, and I am curios to hear his answer. Also I think different stimuli has great potential in itself. But given his strength level is so advanced (beast), and slightly advanced age :) would it be worth the time and system fatigue, and/or injury risk, to get his bench to 340 full rom? would it make him faster than his current explosive speed training? Or if he simply added easy, safe weight at full rom, would the exposure itself be beneficial? Also, I completely agree with you, absolute strength is very important for a sprinter in addition to achieving full rom. But speed is the third goal in the weight room, increasing the speed you can move x weight will have great transfer to the pool, and that seems to be James's main focus at the moment. This makes sense to me since he is already so strong and his speed in the weight room is getting better video to video. Obviously this has done much less for his absolute strength than if he had been training specifically for it for the past couple years, yet still beneficial for the pool. Anyways, thanks for the reply. Just trying to be a good synic and broaden the scope of the discussion because I found your question interesting.

I have and I've even done prehab/pt exercises to improve the strength/resilience of my shoulders, but they just seem sensitive to barbell bench, possibly because I hit them with so much breaststroke work. Full rom isn't something I consider a priority since I've succeeded these last few years without it, so I've been content to just let it go. This time around I hit the shoulders with more 300+ reps and a lot more time under tension at 330 than "usual", which was not a good choice because I do so little of that work. The ultimate goal is to move submaximal weights faster, so throwing in a big grind like this every now and then is good, but max lifting isn't the end goal. 330 vs 340 doesn't really matter and getting up too high, like 400, is probably detrimental because of the increased size required, but maybe after I hit these last couple bucket goals I'll go crazy, get huge and find out :) Thanks!

Not sure, but now I'm curious too. From a push during practice wearing a brief I can go 15low with two strokes, so from a start in a tech suit with a shave, I could probably get pretty close. I've got almost 50 lbs on him, so that definitely helps on the dive and pulldown.

Great video!! I was curious how you would approach a sprint / less is more training approach if you'd only had long course available. Those super short intense workouts like in this video usually involve sets of 25s. So I was wondering how you would go about this in a 50m pool?
@FikeSwim
@FikeSwim Ай бұрын
Thank you! I would either sprint to 25, hop out, and walk back, or for the even 25s starting from the middle of the pool I would dead start flay on the water and do the number of strokes I would take in my race then swim the rest of the way easy. Dead starts are a great way to train, as it's easy to slip/spin on the first couple strokes so you have to be patient and get your technique right for the first couple strokes to be productive. Hope this helps, good luck!

Can you define "rec" again? What effort is that?
@FikeSwim
@FikeSwim 2 ай бұрын
rec breast is an easy, slow form of breast, which normally shouldn't be done slowly, but this is to help change muscle memory. For instance, changing the path of your kick so it's more back and less down, or getting your eyes up, or changing the path of your arms, or just working on the progression of of speed within each stroke by doing slow sweep out, less slow squeeze, even less slow shoot. Hope this helps, good luck!
