I’m new to this. If you don’t mind, what was the stuff you coated/painted it with? The first layer that looked yellowish.

It was a foam safe epoxy we got from a local place at the time. There are many more foam hardcoat options you can choose nowadays. One we still use is called EpoxAmite from Smooth-On.

@scherylove84 OK, well, one easy alternative you can get from those stores is drylok sealer. It comes in white or gray, and you may be able to have color put into the white. Use it as a base coat or primer, then paint over. It creates a nice protective layer that works for yard stuff. It does have a handy gritty type of texture though.

Do you have to coat it in something before painting it? Or do you coat after painting?

Awesome stuff! I’m wanting to make some yard decorations for Christmas. Will be my first time taking on such a project. Do I need to hard coat the foam before painting or can I paint the styrofoam and then use something like polycrylic?

Just painting the foam is OK as long you handle it carefully. It's not a hard coat but it's better than nothing.

Oh my! Seeing this makes me realise how much I miss your collection videos. My life changed after watching one of those videos! I love to see your whole process! From the picture refereces... to the sketch... to the production... and to the final result (which is amazing). I'm a big fan of blow molds as well! The shelf is heavy because it's made of plywood, but the two of us can lift it OK. His head can also be removed, which makes it easier.
