My favorite feature of Steel Battalion is how if you don’t eject when you’re about to die, the game deletes your save.

THANK YOU! For talking about it. This is the closest thing I've ever wanted in service to what was felt in Division: Survival. Division 2 is great to play, but doesn't feel as awesome as D1 and Survival. I'd be down for a D3 that brings us permanently to snowy NYC or seasonal and give us Survival + some object permanence to our personal home, not just base of operation. I was never really into the stories, I was into myself and my loadout.

Honestly this the type of "Gameplay" I was imagining as a child whenever I was playing make believe as a Gundam pilot, a proper controller with buttons, switches and dual lever controls. The Jankiness of it all actually adds to the experience despite simply being the result of tech limitations at the time and the way they embraced its Jank by incorporating it into in-game lore is one of the very few that I've seen to successfully do the "It's not a bug, it's a feature" idea. I hope to god this type of mech controller and game combo does not fade away to non-existence.

Division 2 had alot of things better about it but the biggest flaw that made me hang it up is the guys that come and take over everything you just worked so hard to capture. Then if you dont continuously go around the map and redo EVERYTHING you just did hours of work they can take it back AGAIN!!!! Literally ruins all of that sense of accomplishment. Its a defeating feeling.

You know hearing hamsterball was harder then steel battalion was strangly validating considering its a game that I literally only remembered existed because I was having flashbacks to it when you were talking about how difficult it was.

In case nobody else mentioned it: You absolutely can skip the initial cut scene in Division 1 Survival.

I’d play a game like this if it’s affordable or like a game control/story similar to 86 anime! Watch it first season is good while second season is very anime. Hard to explain without spoilers but recommend specially the soundtrack!

First time I played this I self-destructed by hitting the button by just pressing every button also ejected a couple times again just pressing buttons no manual but after a while you get the hang of it.

Three copies. I had three full in the box copies of this game and as times got tough I sold them off one by one. I even had one of the controllers spliced with a USB and used it on PC for Mechwarrior 4. You never know how much something will mean until it's gone. God damn I miss this game.

My buddy said that back when this game came out, he was in college and he was at a massive party and they actually had this set up in one of the game rooms. He said it was really cool, but you know he only was able to spend like five minutes on it cause there’s so many other people who want to play 😂❤

Even though I didn't come close to completion in that mode, in The Division. I still think it's a brilliant mode. Well thought out atmosphere and game mechanics, definitely a challenge, but I just never had the adequate co-op partner for it.

My Roomate in the early 2000’s worked at a video game resale store in Atlanta called Swap USA. I remember how excited he was bringing this home. The setup took up a good half of his room and stayed that way for the next two years lol. I’m glad to see this gem of a game getting a proper review. I’m happy you found it enjoyable with all its quirks. It is truly unique and worth being remembered and played

Extraction Shooters where you get to keep your loot so long as you extract it should be the standard. I know it probably won't be this way, but if Marathon isn't like that, I won't play it.

This game was definitely not $200 back in the day, it was $300+tax. Doesn't feel like 23 years ago, but damn it was. I remember when I bought Line of Contact on opening day, back when the store was called EBX before it became EB games before it was bought out by gamestop. I remember subscribing to xbox live, I remember a true online 5 vs 5 match was very rare and didn't happen often as back then most people didn't have the wifi to support the online play. I remember being the only 16 year old kid and everyone else online were 30 year old dudes (holy S@#$ those guys are over 50 years old now). You learned to get a cheap surround sound system because the audio is directional according the front screen of the cockpit, that way you could hear where VT mechs were. I remember a rank actually meant something. If you were really good, you didn't rely on lock on to kill your opponents and instead shot the legs out from under the VT, allowing you to steel enemy mechs so you didn't have to buy more. Don't flip the toggles too aggressively in start up or they'll break, being plastic toggles with metal sleeves, thus ruining the whole game until you bought a replacement controller. If you were really really good you shifted your transmission up and down repeatedly to throw off their auto aim which compensated for hitting moving targets. It was also an unwritten rule and totally forbidden to "clip dump" your opponents, considered a douche move, where you held down the fire button while pressing the reload button continuously allowing you to dump all your mags but also get 4 consecutive shots instantly which in turned killed your opponent in seconds. Clip dumping would brand you and get you kicked out of game sessions. You could also hide in trees and turn the toggles off which would allow you to go stealth if you wanted to spawn camp. I learned that the damn Japanese were some racist bastards and would not let anyone else jump into their session unless you were Japanese. Also, in order to buy VT mechs there was a supply dump that, in my time zone, happened at 2 am, and you had to refresh the supply store screen constantly and get in and buy your mechs fast, as the 1st and 2nd gen mechs would sell out instantly due to short supply. Unless you had fast internet you were basically stuck piloting 3rd gens as you couldn't get in and buy mechs before they sold out. Money wasn't a problem as we figured out how to clone it so everyone was millionaires lol. We would equip REC77 guns which were proximity based grenade launchers, so you didn't need a direct hit, just get close and it'll connect some damage, we'd then travel as a pack of 3 and focus our attacks on one target at a time. This was pretty effective and could surprisingly win games with 3rd gen mechs against 1st gens. THE COOLEST THING, if you were super lucky! All mechs had inventory numbers when you bought them from the supply store and they were chronological 1 of 1000, 2 of 1000 and so on. If you bought a mech that was within 1 of the first 10 or 1 of the first 50, the cockpit would be gold colored, and they became so special you almost didn't want to use them for fear of losing them. Drago76 and Bronx, those were my guys. This is "clipdumpworkman", now grey beard, signing off~

A new installment of this game with a New Controller, with the game itself on newer engines with the capabilities of newer PCs and Consoles would be insane.
