Great video Martha is an amazing track on closing time. I have listened to Tom here and there throughout the years. Someone gave me Blue Valentine about a decade ago. Loved that record and was slightly familiar with others. A few months ago, it was pouring rain while I was about to start work. I put on Rain Dogs. Ever since I've been on a binge. Awesome recaps on the records.

Good afternoon, everyone. Thanks to the author for his attention to such an intellectual genre. Well for you, my friend, who is interested in trip-hop, I highly recommend you to immerse yourself in merging with the following sounds: Tricky (+ Marta separately, + Francesca Belmonte separately), Massive Attack, Portishead (and also Beth Gibbons separately, she has a new release in 2024), Dj Krush, Dj Shadow, Morcheeba, Sneaker Pimps, UNKLE, Thievery Corporation, Lamb, Neneh Cherry (old), Hooverphonic, Björk (Post album from 1995, also recorded by Tricky), Smoke City. Also, Trentemøller (Fixion album), it's different but the influence is definitely there. David Lynch (as a musician) also flirted with aesthetics more than once, but it's already thin ice there. Have a nice listen.

The trilogy of albums- Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild Years-are just amazing. I love all of his albums, but those three are my favourite.

Fugazi is probably my second favorite band, but I’d like to posit Parliament-Funkadelic as the greatest band of all time. 1. While not as politically flawless as Fugazi, they were a voice of African American liberation and afrofuturism. 2. To this day they put on some of the most wild, party like live shows ever. 3. Musicality. The best guitar band by miles, along with just an increasingly talented group of instrumentalists that was able to be as heavy as bands like Black Sabbath, and also always maintain the cool funky sound. 4. While their discog isn’t as perfect, they still have an incredibly long run of stellar albums, that see them experimenting in some way with every song. And I’d argue that because of the time in which they began they had more pressure to put out albums, so a little more fluff had to creep in. But, every song never feels half baked or in experimental or funky.

"Since I left you" is one of those albums that I end up going back to because it just has such a wide array of emotions going on in it. "Feed the Animals" is an album you DRIVE to. Its full of energy. Its for when you have to wake up when you're power walking to work. Gets me pumped up.

I'm from outside of Baltimore so not far from DC. Fugazi songs make it onto local radio pretty often here, or they used to when I was younger. But I found them because I was in punk and hardcore bands, and they're just a staple of the culture. I have friends who have met Ian and they confirm he's a legitimately decent human-being. When I was younger he was a hero of mine, not just because of Fugazi but especially Minor Threat which is one of the best hardcore bands hands down. Bad Brains(absolutely amazing band) are also from here, and I have friends who have met HR and sadly he's not as well off. When I was younger my politics would have been largely informed by Ian's, but today I'll say to you that there's a severe lack of understanding of the opposing side and their motivations. I always demonized republican goals, but we had a Bush presidency. My best friend and guitarist(who is black) of my band told me he was voting Ron Paul and not Obama, and I was in disbelief. We were kids then, but today I'll tell you that Ron Paul was the better choice. I was always pro-choice, but today I'll tell you that most of the arguments for it are nonsense. On a legal/scientific basis many people are pro-life with no religious context needed. Most procedures are people choosing to end something that they chose to do in the first place, and the argument for abuse/incest is used when those make up less than 1% of procedures. I was for social-justice and just about everything else on the left-wing spectrum, but the rights were attained and yet the fight raged on despite achieving victory. Don't demonize conservatives because they are just people looking for the best future, and most of their arguments aren't even faith based anymore.

No offense, but your recommendations are not only very basic (meaning it's what everyone recommends), but also I don't think most of them showcase what the genre is about. I think to a lot of people 4 out of 5 of these albums will sound like hip-hop. here's my list: 1. Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner (this one I agree with you on, it's like the illmatic of grime, absolute essential listening) 2. Wiley - Playtime Is Over (a much grimier sound than his first album imo, and is a better record overall) 3. Skepta - Konnichiwa (again, sounds grimier than Blacklisted, and is a more important release for the genre) 4. 1-800 Dinosaur Presents: TRIM (one of the most unique and lyrical albums by a veteran grime MC with insane production) 5. Novelist - Novelist Guy (the lyrics are kinda meh, but Novelist was one of the most creative voices in the genre revival circa 2013-2017, and the production on this album is sick)

Birdseed and many other Whitehouse albums are a hardcore reawakening and strengthening of empathic circuits that too often get buried or unwired due to the common desensitization many of us go through. Birdseed, Cruise, and Mummy and Daddy, throw everything at you and tear that scar open to remind you just how awful it can be for victims, families and communities to go through these things. I remember tearing up listening to some of those testimonies. “How can you just use em up and throw em away?” The little boy screaming when asked if he wants to go home to see his dad. The little girl pleading for help with the dispatcher, crying “he just knocked my sister out!” It’s horrific but it makes many of us more empathetic because of it.

Kid A was my favorite album for a long time and is still Top 3 to this day. The experience of listening to that album for the first time in middle school has in no small part defined my perspectives on life, expression, and creativity in the decades since. I grew up a socially-isolated autistic "weird" kid, and music communities such as choir and online forums were some of the few places that made me feel a sense of belonging and connection with something greater than myself. My exposure to music growing up was quite narrow, only listening to 70's and 00's rock on repeat in the car. Tool was by far the most adventurous palette my family entertained. When I discovered this album on KZbin...I just couldn't believe music could SOUND like this! This LP was crucial to my adolescence because for the first time, I discovered something that understood my humanity. Embraced hard-to-process, inaccessible qualities and ideas wholeheartedly. Crafted an alien vision with so much worldbuilding I could lose myself in the passion-laden details. Opened my eyes to what LIVING could look like, how vividly I could sense each moment, how clearly I could feel every nuance of my complicated being, how deeply I can plunge into those facets of my identity and learn to love my totality intimately, even if that totality is shunned by so many. It is an incomparable gift that I was given in these 10 tracks: sublime beauty in being true to oneself. Lifechanging art in the most profound sense. It makes me thankful to be alive.

Having lived through the early emergence of Industrial music, I was struck by what seemed an almost palpable demarcation between those who genuinely enjoyed the music and those who merely wanted to be part of the scene. It was the equivalent to Punk Rock posers, who stood out like clowns amongst some genuinely esoteric people. I've always gravitated towards the raw styles of Industrial music, which is often as strong as classical music compositions. I think your choice of albums is quite good. Nevertheless, I probably would have selected one of Skinny Puppy's earlier albums. Mind The Perpetual Intercourse comes to mind.
