I don't know where to start - I stumbled onto this channel as a result of a reddit post in r/jazz - and I couldn't be more impressed. I've been a Miles fan for thirty years, read his autobiography while traveling in Europe (four years after it was published) and I've spent years following threads of the jazz weave - each lending greater understanding and appreciation for the genre and the insane talent of these individuals. You have done SUCH a good job of this. Your presentation is engaging, considered, entertaining, tasteful, and filled with nuggets of pure gold - historical highlights are carefully selected - the temporal atmosphere anchoring these performances - everything is considered. Minor aside for the uninitiated: Bends can also be subtly microtonal, which is to say less than or between the half-steps which make up the typical twelve-tone scale of the piano, guitar, etc. Usually this is to introduce intervals which have a harmonic quality which merely moving a half-step up or down wouldn't be able to capture, such as neutral (between major and minor) and subminor (flatter than minor) intervals which often add a certain spice or bluesiness to the feel of a melody. In many non-Western musical systems, these are incorporated directly into the theory and formal practice of the music; the śruti of Indian classical music and the quartertones and other subtle shadings of Arabic, Persian and Turkish music are particularly well-documented and relatively compatible with American blues and jazz ideas-although the roots of blues bends are more likely in the music of West Africa, particularly the tunings of the kora (a kind of tall, narrow harp) and associated songs of the griots (an ancient and rich subculture of singing storytellers or troubadours throughout Nigeria and Mali). The wild polyrhythms of jazz drumming, however, owe more to different African traditions, particularly those of the Yoruba who were enslaved by the Spanish in Cuba and Hispaniola. (The mixing of Yoruba culture with Spanish and native Arawakan and Taino beliefs is also responsible for religious traditions like Santería, but that's a totally different subject.)
