I worked with him for a while with the Crafty Guitarist and I thought he was a tough person to get along with before I met him but he was completely the opposite. What it is about him is that his humor is so dry that he will be messing with you and you won't even notice until later. He is a very good guy, has a great heart and demands excellence from his musicians.

Second this - I've met him a couple of times for VIP shows, and he's just charming as all get out despite being not only a rock star, but one sharing some extremely rarefied intellectual air (with people like Eno & Brian May & Tom Scholz).

I've never met him, but see that completely. I read interviews with other artists in which they talk about him being all serious and professorial and then casually tossing out hilarious, filthy fucked up stories in his deadpan voice. There's a clip from a British TV show from the early 80s showing Fripp give some very honest and sincere advice to a kid wanting to sent tapes to record companies in order to get signed. He seems genuinely interested in giving that kid a good road map. He's probably mellowed a lot with age too.

There's a certain weird, ethereal, almost fantasy like character to King Crimson's early albums ( court, Poseidon, lizard ... ) As if it comes from a different planet. I can't put my finger on what gives those albums that certain atmosphere. But no other band band has that sound.

@@douglasanderson8636 I think Peter Sinfield's influence is underrated on those early albums, and on the band in general. Not only was he the lyricist, but also kind of an art director. A lot of the fantasy and whimsy that is absent from their post-Islands work comes from him.

A very comprehensive look at the recordings of KC, thank you. There were a few things that were not so much missed out, but could have been mentioned. 1. Elton John, auditioned for the band and Fripp turned him down. 2. John Anderson of Yes was a guest vocalist on Lizard. 3. While playing for Yes, Bill Bruford constantly pestered Fripp for a place in the band. (that funny little man on the stool, Bruford) 4. Jimi Hendrix went to a KC gig in London and declared that they were the best band in the world! 5. Fripp's solo on Sailor's Tale (Islands album) is the most outrageous guitar solo. Why? Because it's all chords. Personal trivia. I went along to listen to my mates rehearse in the basement of a cafe in Fulham. In the passage way was a stack of equipment belonging to another band and I asked my mates who it belonged to. I was told that the name of the band was stencilled on the cover of their Mellotron. MELLOTRON! I exclaimed. If they use a mellotron, they can't be any good I said. I looked at the stencilled name, which proclaimed the legend, King Crimson. This was of course before the release of 'In the Court' and their support gig for the Stones in Hyde Park.

ConstruKction of Light is legitimately my second favorite KC album after THRAK, and I don't really see how it's just "an amalgam of their previous eras". It's a completely new sound, diving head on into progressive and industrial metal, which they only partially experimented with on records like THRAK. Also, like you mentioned for Discipline, Belew's lyrics on this album are some of the best since their debut album, from the thought provoking philosophies of the title track, to the fluid wordplay on Oyster Soup.

Glad to find another person whose absolute favourite album is Lark's Tongues in Aspic ! This record is unique, and after its extreme diversity of nuances on the first side, it manages on its second side to build up towards a climax which can only rival with Starless in my opinion. I mean, the chaining of Easy Money, The Talking Drum and Lark's Tongues is Aspic Part 2 is kind of orgasmic. My personal podium would be : 1. LARK'S TONGUES IN ASPIC (Freaking musical masterpiece from the first to the last second) 2. RED (A powerful and dark work of art, and an overwhelwing testimony from a disbanding Crimson) 3. IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING (A groundbreaking milestone in rock history, the year 0 of prog) And I also want to mention the underrated STARLESS AND BIBLE BLACK for its tense and astonishing improvisations, this one missed my medal. Anyway, keep on making great musical guides, your videos are so relevant, thanks !

I wasn't a big fan of "the Construkction of Light" at first, but after a while I came to appreciate the music on it. The musical ideas on some of the songs are really interesting, and the music theory of some of the songs is fantastic. "Frakctured" alone is a reason to listen to the album. The title track is still played live today too for a good reason.

construkction of light was always one of my favourites when you asked why, i was stumped. i guess i actually like some of the things you specifically mentioned, like the electronic drums,there's a cold, stark, mechanical kinda aesthetic to a lot of the album, the classic fripp and belew interlock from the 80s is there in for instance the title track, but it feels almost robotic and the electronic drums add to that. it's a very electronic king crimson and that's what makes it interesting imho... ok, and frakctured is simply a beast^^

Fantastic video on one of my favourite bands. ITCOTCK and Red are simply perfect but Lizard is actually my third favourite and hugely underrated. It may be their most bizarre record but the songwriting on that record brings out the insane from out of the ordinary in brilliant ways. I haven't found another record that is as equally whimsical and sinister at the same time and I love it.

I agree with 99% of this, but ConstrucKtion of Light is probably my favorite of the final trio of Crimson albums. Love the KC take on blues-y rock on ProzacK Blues, the technically excessive yet still beautiful title tracks, Belew's humorous free association word-play & toy laser gun guitar sounds on The World's my Oyster Soup Kitchen Floor Wax Museum, the shredding headbanger of Lark's Part IV, the gloomy Coda: I Have a Dream with another of Belew's free association word-play but with the playful fun of the former replaced by a much darker pessimistic tone. And then the delightfully sombre finale of Heaven & Earth as cherry on top. Am I the only one who thinks ConstrucKtion of Light is one of the last really good studio albums!? I think this & Thrak are head & shoulders above Power to Believe.

i had the pleasure of seeing them live last year. I saw them on the CoL tour, as well. The current line-up is unbelievably good. 2.5 hours of music, all of it masterfully delivered. Stuff I never thought I'd hear live, and they've constantly been developing new material and working it into shows. Most interestingly, it was the first time I believed Fripp in his insistence that he is not King Crimson. The show was very much the Mighty Crim in full force, and Robert was honestly not that big a part of what was happening, and he looked thrilled for that to the be the case, and to see the band taking off totally under its own power. Absolutely ruined me on live music for months, though. Nothing could come anywhere near that level of delivery, immediacy, and power.

Amazing video, dude! I really love this band and I wishfully believe that one day they'll be properly recognized by the mainstream media. Overall, they actually have the musicians praisement and respect. King Crimson isn't just a band, they're a philosophy of life.

Thanks for this video! I had to remark that I find "The Construction Of Light" a beautiful and brilliant album, even though it's not their best. I especially like the theme track "The Construction Of Light", mostly instrumental and sophisticated. You didn't mention the live album "Heavy Construction" which promoted this album and had two version of the theme track - "Heavy Construction" and "The Construction of Light" (the latter is a pun for "Light Construction"). I also like the energetic track "Into the Frying Pan" and "The World's My Oyster Soup Kitchen Floor Wax Museum" with the stick sounding like a crazy piano playing and Belew's word games. The general sound of this album feels a bit cold and "futuristic" (in a sense it feels that Bruford and Levin are missing), but I assume that's what they aimed for.

+Sidekick 821 Saw Swans live in 1992. They were magnificent. People were crying during Michael's heartbreaking vocal on "Failure", one of the saddest tracks ever committed to vinyl. "White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity" is truly astonishing, as is "Children Of God". Check them out. A great recommendation.

Swans, Eno, Radiohead (an obligatory one that you killed), Death Grips, etc etc. Also, thank you for your Nick Cave guide, as soon as you released it I bought Let Love in on CD. I've been listening to it a lot recently again, and it is probably a 10/10 in my eyes. I appreciate what you're doing and you've put me on to a lot of good shit. After seeing your Liquid Swords review, I would love to see a Wu-Tang one including all of the solo releases.

I think the time period of 1994-2003 actually was King Crimson's most creative period. They reached levels of musical creativity with songs like "Thrak" "Level Five" "Superbottomfeeder (from Projekct X)" that are astounding, to name just a few. On another note, "The Construkction of Light" album is actually one of my favorites by King Crimson, so I was surprised to hear you thought it was a dud. I think it has some of King Crimson's most creative works. The solo that Fripp plays on "The World's My Oyster Soup Kitchen Floor Wax Museum" where he makes his guitar sound like a piano sounds otherworldly to me. "Prozakc Blues" is one of the most badass songs I ever heard. I just love the whacky blues sound it has to it. "Lark's Tongue in Aspic Pt. IV" is another masterpiece. Who else could write a song like that but King Crimson? I am not very musically knowledgeable, but the rhythm of the guitars on that song is just beyond me. I cannot figure it out. Adrian's Belew's solo is one of the best solos I have ever heard. Frakctured is so odd sounding. For that I am sure there would be a lot of people that would not like it, but once again it showcases King Crimson's creativity. The song, "The Construkction of Light" sounds like a song that no one but King Crimson could come up with, I love it.

Great video as usual. Personally as much as I like others it'll probably always be Red. The level of intensity and then release they're able to to hit in the final moments of Starless to end the album really are unparalleled by any other band I listened to. That said, I have to say I always quite enjoy Wake of Poseidon, I maybe wouldn't put it on the same level as Discipline, Red, or Court but for me I would rank it around the same as Lark's Tongues. I think while people are certainly welcome to see the DNA of Court as something which the album never really escapes from, I think where Poseidon succeeds is by taking that DNA and playing with and transforming it. With maybe the best example being the not so-subtle but very brief section of Court played during Devil's Triangle. Also Guide to Pink Floyd maybe? Favorite band so biased but there's a lot to talk about.

This may already have been mentioned but King Crimson were already playing small gigs in the UK in1969 before the Hyde Park concert (Rolling Stones). I saw them 4 days before at Goldsmiths College in South London in what was an 'arts' festival. They played in a small marquee stage on the back lawn of the college. I recall a bit of a light show and the now classics from their first album. They blew me away as one of the first gigs that I had been to and I didn't even know they would be at the Stones gig that I attended a few days later. So much for 24/7 media coverage now!

So much, so, that I had to open up another KZbin window and pull examples down for reference, even though I knew most of the catalog you covered. A very entertaining video for fans of Crimson and music fans alike. Nice work. What was particularly interesting for me is, despite being a serious music consumer from the mid seventies, I never heard anything by Crimson until Discipline and everything else for me that came after that, included Beat, Larks Tongues, Red, Starless & Bible Black, Islands and, eventually In the Court...When I finally got there, there was something worthy of the wait

Great video! I just want to add that you really can't gloss over Jamie Muir's influence on Bill Bruford. Muir's improvisational prowess and free jazz approach became an integral part of Bruford's sound. Bruford has been quoted saying that he wanted to work with Fripp and Muir specifically because he wanted to learn from them.

Since you asked: I submit that The ConstruKction of Light is a wonderful record, in fact one of their very best. It is full of intricately construKcted polyrhythms in epic long tracks, intermixed with some sexily catchy prog pop songs. I don't think there's a bad track on the record, just a few mediocre ones that prevent it from being an uncompromised masterpiece. But it also has the title track, which is one of KC's absolute best pieces - very trippy, unique and masterfully constructed - and all the other longer tracks are pretty great, too, from Lark IV to FraKctured. The production on this album is a bit thin and underwhelming, to be sure, and some of the tracks work better in their live versions on live CDs and DVDs. Overall, The Power to Believe might edge it out for me due to this reason, but that doesn't mean ConstruKction is somehow bad, let alone "a dud." It is a fun, bold and innovative prog album that oozes confidence and style. Definitely not one to be dismissed.
