so a primordial gods must stop robot aliens from colonizing your believers home. interesting. you play a god game. the ai plays a rts. glad that the dev made a asymmetrical single player game single player. kinda curious how many genres you can put into a single game.

I remember playing it a lot during my elementary and middle school days. It's my all-time favorite. Sure, it has a lot of bugs, but I just ignored it and continued playing. Thanks for bringing back meories.

I am enjoying these under 10 min review/lookbacks. If you made a playlist of 10 or 20 of them, you'd have a kickass few hours of content to run in the background while you do some work.

You’re misunderstanding the format of the game. There’s like 100 micro stories and I gave one possible answer to one of them. It’s not like I just told you Vader is Luke’s father.

The idea of the inventory as the player's agency is something so many games, and players, sideline. It's nice that you highlighted it.

I still hold that mystery dungeon games are proper roguelikes, meta progression and all. It has all the hallmarks of a roguelike, and if the meta progression could be reasonably ignored or downplayed while still being able to succeed, then what makes it any different? Tales of Maj'eyal has a save mode, but most people would agree it's still a roguelike, and I feel strongly the same about Tangledeep despite that having a lot of meta systems in place. Regardless, very nice review, always cool to see JP exclusive games with fan translations I haven't heard of!

The PS1 sequel is also great - for years I overlooked it as I thought it was just a port, but no it's a full new thing, with each dungeon progressively getting harder and focusing on a different type of interaction, before a big final gauntlet dungeon at the end. There's even more opportunities for progression between runs with tags that can be merged onto items, but it's not worth chasing most of them, as again item usage is what makes or breaks a run.

This one doesn't even have a boss at the end, does it? It kind of goes along what you're saying, about playing as some mere merchant instead of the typical hero.

You can make the case that this game influenced the first and second 3D Zeldas. In the first game it gave you the day night mechanic. In the second game it gave you the ominous looming presence of a deadline that you had to accomplish in 7 days.

At the time this game came out it was looked at as too hard and cryptic, the jumping was the biggest issue and figuring out how to get through the water lowering sections. Once you know what to do though it’s the best one holding the atmosphere and nonstop action with the best graphics on the system up until the very end when you enter Castlevania. The gdd as me drags some but this can be mitigated by getting the body parts out of order. Everybody loved the original game during the nes lifespan but this is the best one today.

Castlevania one is flawless in terms of it's control and control animation. It looks smooth. I love 3 but the control feels slightly jank despite being similar to one. It's better than 2 though. Simon's Quest feels floaty. I still put 3 near the top.
