I saw this movie when it came out. It was a double feature in Tulsa. The other feature made me sick to my stomach; it was "Last House on the Left." After being raised on B-Westerns, I could stand the gunfights, but the criminal bullying in Last House sickened me. I sat thru Last House to see Dillinger. I'm a fan of Warren Oates and Jeffrey Lewis. The other actors were also fine. On a summer night, after seeing Manhattan Melodrama, in an air-conditioned theater, the only air conditioning there was in that era, Dillinger walked out of the theater, with two women companions, and started down the sidewalk. John Dillinger was killed there by FBI agents. Frenchie served a prison sentence and returned to the Rez. She died there, alone. Bye Bye Blackbird.
