Music was changing, in 1967, from the poppy Brill Building slick production of Top 40 hits, to a San Francisco-influenced California sound. Surf had been big 1963, through '65, but Brian Wilson took the genre to its ultimate expression in 1966, with Pet Sounds, his magnum opus. "Music", the cumulative enterprise that is Popular Music at any given time, was morphing from Beatlemania, to a harder brand of rock 'n' roll that would be called Rock. That genre would morph into Heavy Metal Artists began taking themselves seriously, crafting their albums around themes and connected songs. Neil Diamond started out making good singles, not too challenging, but great rhythm and production, and catchy lyrics, then took himself too seriously. Still, it was always fun playing Solitary Man. The Doors were in their prime, in 1967, the first album great, but the second, Strange Days, a giant leap forward. It was a crackerjack year! The Beatles could do nothing wrong, in 1967. Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane led off a powerhouse year that ended with the double-A-sided single, Hello, Goodbye b/w I Am the Walrus. Pete Townshend and the Who stepped up their game, releasing The Who Sell Out, one of the band's best outings, and still one of my favorite LPs from the 'Sixties. Along with A Quick One While He's Away, it was a precursor to the grandiosity of Tommy and Quadrophenia. In short, 1967 was a very good year, the first of many to come. There were a lot of good records. Vanilla Fudge changed the landscape with their psychedelic version of the Supremes' smash, You Keep Me Hanging On. Sadly, the rest of the album was not as engaging. The band would follow up with another pop-retake, The Beat Goes On, but again, the album did not live up to the single, a fatal flaw, in those days. The Electric Prunes LP was interesting, but not gripping, and the band suffered from terminally bad management. Their manager sent out another band, to promote the album, and had them record a follow-up disc. The same thing would happen to Fleetwood Mac, a few years later, following the sudden departure of key member, and incomparable guitarist, Peter Green, with a better outcome. Strawberry Alarm Clock boasted the under-utilized Ed King, who would go on to help create Lynyrd Skynyrd's sound, but the album still sounds Pop-py, more Top 40 than psychedelic, and far from the gritty Southern Rock of Skynyrd. Between the Buttons, though, is a true classic. If you're listening to the UK version, that is, minus the add-on of the Let's Spend the Night Together/Ruby Tuesday single. Eric Burdon deserved a better fate than he got, but Winds of Change was a big part of why he didn't. A lackluster LP, buried beneath his ego, it charted a new course for the Animals: straight to the cut-out bin! Aretha's break-out 1967 LP, with R-E-S-P-E-C-T, was a tad tepid. Lady Soul, released 10 months later, featured Eric Clapton, Joe South, and Bobby Womack to better results. You missed the best album of the year, possibly even the decade, the last album from the original line-up of Love, Forever Changes. It's still on my Hot 200 great albums list, after 56 years, and thousands of plays. Like the other records on my list, it opens up to repeated listenings. Popular Music exploded in 1967, in ways not seen since the late 18th and early 19th Century, when the "great composers" were busily inventing the artform. Hey Zonkman! Cool to hear about the meetup with Eric. RIP John Mayall. There’s a new shop that opened up a few months back just north of Atlanta. Full of that Stoner/Doom stuff that’s right up your alley. See you on GMRN. Have a good weekend.

@@NateBouchard Nate, oh wow Hotlanta is a couple more hours past Greenville but we would definitely do a meet up there if I’m headed down there. I’d definitely try to get with you if times and day work out. I haven’t been to Atlanta since 2022 I think. Thanks for hanging out. Peace ☮️ Namaste 🙏 the Zonkman

So cool that you and Dave got to go and visit Eric and do some record shopping. Wow - what a cool gift (tie-dye shirt) from Eric! And then you got to meet up with Art! Fantastic! I'm one of those people who can't stay up for GMRN. lol Rock on Zonkman!

@@EightVinylLow Emma, thanks for stopping by and hanging out. I didn’t choose the still shot of the John Mayall record for the video. YT chose it. I definitely have to give A Hard Road some more listens. RIP John

Your real wood record racks are awesome, and I like the tower stereo set-up as well ! I do love my Cd's like you, and I have them backed up on my Windows 10 and external hard drives.. Cool !

@@jtsrecordroom3963 JT, cool you noticed the wood shelves. It is two pieces but still heavy. I tried to build it like a brick shithouse. I used construction grade lumber and not furniture grade. I sanded it down some but not enough. I’ve got mats in every cubicle in hopes it wouldn’t rub on the bottom of the records so roughly. The wife found that tower on marketplace probably six years ago. I think it works perfectly. I never liked stacking anything directly on the amp cause it would get hot. This lets everything breathe with its own shelf. Have a great day! Really nice, Steve ! My oak wooden shelf is a 48"x 84" that I found thrifting.. 30 dollars, I think ? It's heavy duty like yours. I might do a component tower in my record room also like yours once I move Cd's and records around. Have a good one, and I'll see you again ! ✌
