QUESTION: I've noticed in this video and many, many others from different sources that the fencers tend to go back and forth in a straight line. Why doesn't anyone circle? I don't understand. EDIT: One hard and fast rule - after every bout, it's clear that the contestants need to have water readily available. 😉

what a superb sportmanship in calling the hits! airsofters would better pay attention to these guys.

This is so based for the epee to win. Even the first rapier hit was a stab but they counted it as a cut?? But later the epee cuts and it counted

I think the first rapier fighter should have been more aggressive. She let the saber fighter have the initiative, which is a sure way to lose. With the longer weapon and a dedicated parrying dagger, you should set the tone. The second rapier fighter got it right, he was MUCH more aggressive.

Not a good test because it is not taking armor into consideration. Rapier, dagger, mace and small sword are designed to defeat armor. Sabre is weak against plate armor.
@ArizonaAirspace2 күн бұрын
This is not realistic because the Hussar Saber fencer got the direct head hit at the beginning of the fight. That would have been the end in real life. He would have killed his rapier fencer opponent or badly injured him to a point where he would pass out due the hit to the middle of his forehead.

havent watched yet, but: well under what conditions? a rapier is hands down the most scary in a duel IMO, but its also almoist industrial age i think. its long as hell and quick and deadly. my favourite is still the spear, just because of bias

I feel like slashing attacks should have counted for the rapier. I understand that the Rapier is not great slashing sword. However I also would not want to get slashed with a rapier. It wouldn't probably be powerful enough to remove a limb but It would be more than enough to do some really nasty damage. It could certainly end a fight. Getting slashed on the arm would probably bust you wide open.

I don’t really know anything about sword fighting of any kind. In enjoyed the video. Why were so many of the hits counted as too dangerous for HEMA rules? Most seemed like reasonable hits. I can kind of see the throat being off limits but the heart? A sword thrust to the heart seems to me like a very reasonable attack with minimal danger of injury when taking into account the blunted tips and padding.

It's really cool to see a pro olympic fender fight a rapier :) rapier definitely had advantage in length, but disadvantage in speed.
@tprocan08676 күн бұрын
There is no such thing as the best sword. Swords have advantages and disadvantages to certain things. For instance a sword like the hussars blade (curved) would be effective against a short sword (not curved) and a shield since it has more reach through the shield.

The epee fencer was phenomenal. Ordinarily, swordsmen double down on either their tenacity, their speed or their defensive capabilities. She excelled at all three and combined them with rapid, unpredictable footwork. The rapier fencer clearly took an older man's approach, conserving energy and attempting to end things with fewer attacks. Now, 38 isn't really "old", and he's clearly in good shape, but anyone who has reached that age will tell you a healthy 23 year old has a world of advantage over them in terms of agility and range of motion, especially when combined with his weapon weighing over twice as much. She relied on her agility to obscure her patterns of attack. He relied on patient planning and making every movement count. In fact, the more I think about it, the parallels between this fight and Yoda vs Count Dooku are hilariously relevant in a way I thought I'd never observe in a real fight 🤣

A some long video with fencing movements(counterattacks ,counter parries, disarmings and sweeps using weapon) At slow motion would be greeted. Too, another one with medieval bare hands fighting. By the other hand I have seen the fencers appears in medieval wear, what is great, but seeing movement in armor (chain mail vs plated with same weapon for seeing diferences) too would be well. As ways for win armor opponent weaknesses or key parts (attacking in edge or last lenght of sword at armor joints, or smashing at middle plate piece with smashing weapon (battle hammer or mace or flail) for crushing bones with impact. Or attacks to body joints on front and behind (axile/ingles, wrist/anklets, elbow/knees ) you know, for cutting tendoms damaging the arc movements or provoking falling of weapon, blinding you by blood falling because a cut on eyebrows, doing "the six cuts" dobe at face as I saw in a fencing manual, ♦✴✴or even ways of disarming a shield from his user. Much videos show disarmings sword vs sword. But how are disarmings sword vs hammer or mace , or versus lance or halberd?. I know you practice only fencing but a tutorial video with battle injures and comsecuencies at battle and effects on person life once he has survived could be ashtonising. Besides, (and I know this is not your purpose at this videos but you could upload a link or two) Seeing how was the medieval treatments for that injures, and bed time restings carings. (Or even what herbs or medicines were used) If not a video, perhaps a link to other video makers of that. I say this because you can search "medieval medicine" etc at youtube or ibternet but will be appearing "normal cityzens " medicine things.(heal a cold ,cough, or stomach problems,etc Not battle injures healing (cutted tendoms, smashed nerves, pieced bone joint, marrow punctured in stomach or lunge by a hammer impact, festroyed eye by smashing/puncturing, or blood fulled lungs. Or even metal little pieces of armor or weapon that has entered the wound or are went more deep till entering stomach, or being too near of heart, ...or the efects of an infection resulting from the oxidizing of damaging weapon. If you are not focused on this kind of things, some links to sites were see this, could be greeted. And, I know, as fencers you will know other groups that you consider "good at his thing" I will be pleased if you can apport me a couple of links of " really good expert fencers" Besides I have thinked if there is a "world cup" of fencing...it is this the case? Who are the fencer/s with most number of first places? Or... how is the foot/fencing technical movement training ? You train with heavier weapons in order to be fastest when using real weapon? Pointing exercises with sword, or types of puncturings (I dont know, perhaps plunged weapon into body,doing a twist for causing internal uggly damages,and retre weapon in a little crossed way for biggering the cut. In adittion I have only seen one handed weapons, what about two handed? Dane axe, goddendag, or even two handed flail or warhammer. I have heard blood is cause of oxidizing, hows the best way for cleaning it in ancient times?being sure of no micro rests of blood. If you know links to this kind if things (mainly youtube links but too one or two from google ). Besides in case of wooden hafted weapons, wich kind of wood were used, how they cured the wood, barnish it, etc

Martha with the Epee were clearly better if no rules were attached. Her movement and the ability to punish bad spacing with hand, leg and arm cuts would give her the edge. Pun intended.

Is rapier movement really so linear? My weapons experience is mostly chinese. Sparring against an experient jian swordsman without angling is suicide. Is there a specific reason why a linear back and forth movement be better while using a rapier?
@magpie146614 күн бұрын
Some of the hits should not have been considered unsafe seeing as the reply came waaay after the opponent would have been debilitated from the strike, and after their arm's momentum had concluded for that move, leading to a second swing or thrust making the target- this happened in favor of both opponents but was ultimately unsatisfying!

there two major differences between the rapier and an epee. the rapier is heavier, and has two sharp edges. the epee only has a sharp tip, which means only stabs are vaible. I also think that the rapier is at a major disadvantage due to the weight. The rules chosen was thrust only, but I think that is essentially making the rapier an epee, but slightly heavier. the rules, should have been slash and stabs for the rapier, since it was used like that. but no slashes for the epee. and grabbing the enemy sword shouls still be allowed, since we know it was a legitimate technique, even with sharp edges.
