OK, I'm beamed on and ready to go. I'm rewatching this to prep to thread and of course, questions. In designing, I was using the norwegian book you show for inspiration (Vevtradisjon) and fuddling my way through the norwegian, it looks like each unit has 4 ends, so that's how I calculated my number of warp threads. Lillemor Johansson says the same thing (translated into English, phew). To clarify, you seem to have each unit as only two threads, is that right? If so, this means this is just a design decision? Vevtradisjon seems to also have you thread 2 ends each through a ground heddle (which is attractive as it would cut ground unit threading in half) to get 4 ground ends in twoo ground heddles. Do you think that's right (again, an attempt at me reading norwegian here....)? Or at least, do you think that's doable? I like to be lazy where I can ;-)

@DuellingRabbits5 ай бұрын
Good question. The best thing to do is rig the strings over the heddles. Look carefully around the 30-second mark: you can see how the heddles are trapped between the length of string and where it goes into the hole on the shaft bar. Hope that answers your question!

Thank you so much for this video. I just read Blackberry and Wild Rose by Sonia Velton which features people designing and working designs in silk on a drawloom. I have two jack looms and understand a fair bit of weaving terminology, but I was so lost during the book on how the drawlooms worked and why it required two people. I'm going through and watching videos on drawlooms and i really appreciate how clearly you explain the mechanics.
@DuellingRabbits5 ай бұрын
Ah, yes - back in the day (and currently in some parts of the world) a second person does the job of the modern Swedish Drawloom's console. Much more intricate designs are possible this way: it is my dream to experience one of these looms myself. Thank you so much for watching - and please let me know if you have any questions.
@skullzandbonez1006 ай бұрын
I have to admit, while this video is very informative, I still find the whole mechanics confusing. For example you demonstrate that without some kind of restoring force the jacks do not return to neutral but it’s unclear to me why that’s the case. I fundamentally don’t understand why the whole heddle assembly doesn’t immediately proceed to one of its polar positions (ie, how do the jacks remain neutral) when no restoring force is applied as shown @ 2:20. Unless the torque applied on the jacks by the lower lamms is equal to the opposing torque applied on the jacks by the shafts and upper lamms, the jacks should proceed to one position or another. Perhaps the friction in the jacks’ pivot points and the pulleys are sufficient to maintain the shafts in their final position? Perhaps the jacks are uneven and have greater weight on the bottom? While I understand how the elastics and weights can return the jacks to neutral, could you explain the following to me in further detail: When no restoring force is applied (as shown in 2:20) how is it that the shafts can exist at neutral? Why don’t the shafts rapidly proceed to one of their extreme positions (fully raised, or fully lowered)? Surely the torque on the jacks is not *perfectly* balanced. Why don’t the shafts “not budge from their previous positions”.
@DuellingRabbits5 ай бұрын
So ... inertia I think? I have never really thought about it in the terms you describe, but I am going to go out on a limb and posit that the CM jacks are not balanced against the weight of the lamms and treadles. Even on a single-harness loom, a new treadle must be pressed to clear the previous shed. There is no inherent 'balance' in the coupers/CM jacks: on a vertical countermarch, the pivot point isn't even in the center. All the engineering is geared towards overcoming gravity and the tension of the warp - so that when lamms are down (even when they are raising shafts) they tend to stay down if they are heavy enough (new Standard looms have longer lower lamms for this very reason). Add the fact that on a drawloom not every shaft is in motion for each pick and it is easy to see how the problem can compound. I agree that any shaft at neutral tends to stay at neutral - but that is only the case until it is first called into service. Does that make sense? Does it answer your question? Thank you for the thought experiment!

Now I can full my deflected double weave sampler to get a preview of how the scarves I will weave on the rest of the warp will turn out.
@cbritten6 ай бұрын
I am so with you on counterweights for all drawlooms. I would go even further to say counterweights for all shafts (not just 6) for all countermarch looms. I just finished a huck sampler on my 8S Ideal (horizontal countermarch) and made good use of the buttonhole elastic "shaft bras" on two of the shafts. I would have preferred to have had counterweights, because for one thing I also had one rising shaft. And I completely agree that it would be preferable to have proper weights for the setup rather than sandbags.

This was an interesting video. Thanks. I have weights on my single unit horizontal countermarch loom. However for some reason the shafts don’t snap back. Great video, in particular as i have struggled with this. One question--if you have the option to put elastics on your lamms or on the shafts, why do you prefer putting elastics on the lamms? I haven't tried that yet. Also, i've seen pictures of looms with the counterweights--thanks for explaining "what the heck that is".
@DuellingRabbits6 ай бұрын
I guess because I can? I find it easier to work away from all the cords cluttering up the real estate over the beater. I also like the idea that we are working with the lamms rather than against them - I don't think it's my imagination that the system balances more easily and with less effort that way.
@chrisking92456 ай бұрын
Love your videos. So informative. I have an 8 shaft baby wolf jack loom but am looking into getting a Julia drawloom. On my loom shaft 1 is in front of the weaver. On a drawloom is shaft 1 at the back of the loom. Also, do you treadle from left to right or right to left. Thank you.
@DuellingRabbits6 ай бұрын
This is a point of debate, I know - but the numbering of shafts is pretty arbitrary. Since I teach at Vävstuga, I use the Swedish system of starting to number towards the back of the loom - but when I remember I try to use terms like 'the shaft closest to the beater' to avoid confusion. We could name them Lewis, Max, George, and Charles and that would be OK! Similarly, it is our convention to treadle from right to left - but that doesn't matter either and depending on what I'm doing I may decide to switch it up. You do you!
@chrisking92456 ай бұрын
😂😂😂😂 That made me laugh. thank you Amy. I won't get hooked up on the small stuff. I guess threading back to front or front to back and treadling right to left or left to right really doesn't matter as long as I keep things consistent.

I have a 8 shaft jack loom. Not counter march. Could i do this if i got some long eyed heddles. So very interesting.
@DuellingRabbits6 ай бұрын
So, a countershed loom is required for this strategy because warp ends must be able to move both up and down. If you are interested in complex/figurative designs, other methods (such as split-shed weaving, pick-up, etc) work better on jack looms.

As usual - great video And you are a genius at playing the loom But was it possible to employ some levers on the drawing board (7) for this purpose? Meaning that the tie up is fixed as usual and we connect each lever to a lever on the drawing board When pressing, we raise the lever on which the turn is?

Good question. I set them up vertically on my lazy Kate because that's what I've got. I set the cones/spools/whatever so the yarn is winding off the top (clockwise) and don't have trouble with untwisting. But I do know folks who insist the cones must be set on their sides. Matter of personal preference, I guess?

I managed to find myself a second horizontal countermarch, Glimakra of course. I finally had time to put a warp on it last month. I got the warp all threaded, slayed, and wound. I pulled the locking pins out of the jacks and everything dropped. All of my shafts were sitting on the warp. I re-locked my jacks and rechecked all my connections, pulled the pins and again all the shafts were setting on the warp. I spent A LOT of time going over and over the loom trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I compared the new tie-up with the loom I already had that works great. 🤬 I was to the point where I was taking pictures to email to you to see if you could see where I was going wrong. During all of this I had pulled the bench way back from the loom and after taking my photos I sat down to think things through one more time. As I was sitting and grumbling I suddenly noticed that my "Long Lamms" were only about an inch longer than my short lamms. 😲Do you have any idea why someone would cut their long lamms down to almost the same length as their short lamms????? I have gotten new Long Lamms and they loom works beautifully. Also thanks for another great video.🤓
@DuellingRabbits8 ай бұрын
How frustrating! There are a few reasons why the lamms might have been a bit shorter than we would ideally like, especially since the Glimakra looms used to be manufactured that way - the longer lower lamms are of relatively recent design. Or it is possible that the lamms were borrowed from a different loom in the dim and distant past. It is not an uncommon problem but I am so happy to hear you were able to get it sorted. Congratulations on your awesome trouble-shooting!

Structurally, this Smålandsväv example is identical to Opphämta on the drawloom with 2-end units. Have you seen my vid on Opphämta or read about it at all? If I wanted to weave this exact piece on my drawloom, I would probably thread my 2-end leashes onto the pattern shafts in a suitable profile - but of course if I were to arrange them in points or a straight threading I could alter my designs on the fly. Hope that answers your question!

@@DuellingRabbits Thanks--I will see if I can figure it out. I just got my drawloom (:-)) but the extension is still in production so I figured I should try some smalandsvav while I wait, obviously! I assume we just put on two pattern shafts (as if we only had two drawloom units vs. the normal 10, 20 +) and then rather than thread the ground shafts 1234 every time, we only thread those pattern shafts that are indicated in the warp threading?
@DuellingRabbits5 ай бұрын
@@saraclevering1419 You've got the idea! On this setup, the ground and pattern shafts are reversed: ground is at the back (threaded on two shafts for plain weave or sometimes 4 for rosepath, which can also be woven as plain weave - variety!) and pattern at the front: 4, 6 or more shafts as required by your design. Easy peasy. If you want to e-mail your drawdown at some point I'd be happy to do a sanity check - but I'm sure you'll be just fine. Have fun!
