blackpink with duddududdu got me into kpop back in 2019-20, then i started listening to dreamcatcher and (G)i-dle at the same period of time never been into kpop tho until 2024 when i just came back and dove into. On my 2nd run babymonster got me hooked and aespa, the rest is history 😂

However, you shouldn't ignore their B-sides either. They try things out there. There is hardly a genre that they don't touch on. Dreamcatcher has a strong international fan base (they have now had several US/EU tours), while it took them a long time to gain recognition in Korea. This is because rock was less popular in K-pop. A trend that started after a scandal about indie rock on a music show. In recent years, however, rock has definitely found its fans again. Boy bands like Day6 and The Rose have now had good careers and girl bands are also quite popular. QWER have picked up a few awards this year and Rolling Quartz is another female rock band that frequently tours the US/EU. Quantitatively, it is not yet comparable to J-Rock (Japan is, after all, the largest market for rock/metal music), but qualitatively they are on the same level.

I'll also toss in recommendation for Dreamcatcher just to further vouch for them. They actually share the same producers with Ateez for many of their songs. Though the groups do sound very different. I know you have reacted to Scream which is more on the EDM side than the typical Dreamcatcher title track. I'd describe Dreamcatcher as a sort of rock fusion group, but they do have some pure rock songs and some heavier songs with metal instrumental. Even as a smaller group, their commitment to their concept and rock sound has made them a cult favourite with a very dedicated fan base. As others have said, they are an absolute must watch/listen for metalheads or rock fans trying to get into kpop.

1 - Dreamcatcher, YES! 2 - Bad Omens, also Yes, lol. I discovered bad Omens last year and love them. As for Dreamcatcher, they're my favorite group in music. They have heavy songs, some songs that border on full metal, but they also have gorgeous ballads, jazz, pop and much more. Some other recs for Dreamcatcher are Vision Piri No More Break the Wall live showcase version on Andrew Lees channel. Curse of the Spider 2024 concert version Honestly the whole discography is great but these will probably appeal more to your normal taste.

I have no idea why All Night is on there since it isn’t originally kpop and wasn’t one of the best releases. I would suggest Aespa’s other releases this year and Kiss of Life. Both groups have had a great year music wise.
