When I saw this in my You Tube list, I immediately thought of my late uncle. He often mentioned Mycroft to me, and it was my uncle who told me about Mycroft.

Why does Mycroft look old enough to be Sherlock's grandfather? And why is every version afraid to cast a fat actor, when the stories specifically say Mycroft is obese?
@cindystewart541717 сағат бұрын
Good question. In the stories Mycroft is 7 years older than Sherlock. In reality Charles Gray was 5 years older than Jeremy Brett. Genetics perhaps? I mean they are about the same age difference as their characters. He is described by Doyle as being much larger and stouter than Sherlock, which you can see by the way Brett can virtually hide behind Gray (which happens just after this clip ends, of course). It isn't perfect, of course, because you want someone who can act the part, and Brett was rather tall himself at 6 ft 1. Besides it seems like their definition of portly and massive in the 1890s was much different than today's my 600 pound life version. Sidney Paget's drawings of Mycroft seem to show him as merely a large man, and Steele (the illustrator for Collier's) never draws him.

As a child I loved the Rathbone Holmes, then I read the Canon and was disappointed in the movies. After reading the Canon several times, I can only picture Jeremey Brett as Holmes in my minds eye.

Quite a nice way of making him Want to meet your brother. But I do like how obviously dear the brothers are to each other here. I mean in the more modern version Sherlock comes through as a much less charismatic individual, akin to a functioning sociopath as he put it and in tow his brother is also a much... colder personality. In a way I do adore that despite their constant bickering and pretend "not caring about the other" you can still glimpse as at the very least Mycroft valuing his brother very highly both as a detective and as a family member. Damn, I guess I shall watch every single Holmes movie, series and whatnot I can get my hands on... again.

LOLROFLMAO! EVen this level of acting has disappeared, let alone the tremendous production values of this show. I saw it when originally broadcast - what a beautiful creation.

I think Mr. Brett is great, but he acts for TV like he’s on the stage with no microphones. He shouts when Watson is three feet away.

Did no one catch the fact that Sherlock brings up his brother for the first time on the day he has to go see him regarding a case. My guess is he brought him up to play up Watsons potential eagerness to meet someone who is more gifted than Sherlock.

The goose was ordered many months before Xmas, and labelled from the order book to Mrs. Baker. Unfortunately, she died soon after. This struck the man so deeply that he let himself go, and the loss of her income was the downfall in his finances. The hat was a present from a well-to-do friend. The candle wax was from the staircase up to his bedroom - no one kept a gas light burning over their stairs or upper landings. If so, Holmes got _everything_ wrong.

Wouldn't it be funny if Professor Moriarty was also a member of the Diogenes Club? It would suit his desire to get away from being the Napoleon of Crime. None of the members are allowed talk to each other. Even if Mycroft recognized him he would never say so.

I still haven't seen a better interpretation of Holmes than this man. Everyone forgets how human Holmes is. I will, though, express that Stephen Fry was an excellent Mycroft, as well.
@markgresch994415 сағат бұрын
I agree, Stephen Fry's Mycroft perfectly encapsulates Mycroft being a low energy shut in, but also a wry genius.
