It's surreal to see young folks play FO1 in 2024. Back in 97 this game was revolutionary. Is it jank? Yeah, always was. But it gave the player choices, and they mattered. Compared to the wacky bubblegum power fantasy that is FO4, they resemble each other in aesthetics only, and even that is a stretch.

I love Fallout 1 I'll never forget how I got the Lost Hills for the first time. I talked with a guy recently about the Fallout Show on Prime and he only played Part 3 and 4 and he was like "why is the Brotherhood so dark in the TV Show?" And I was like "They send you to a super radioactive place in Fallout 1 just to get rid of you they've always been kinda good but always kinda dark as well."

This was one of my favorite games at the time and nowadays whenever i boot it back up and don‘t see anyone online, I just feel like a part of my childhood experience was ripped away from me. What a time, 2017 was.

It's a fantastic game. One of the first I ever completed. Play 2 if you haven't. Pretend the whole first tutorial area doesn't exist though... Because it wasn't supposed to.

This takes me back to my first year of university. My "new" PC barely could handle quake 2 so I asked for a recommendation from the guy in the PC gaming store. He asked what sorts of games I liked (and my PC specs) and suggested this. I was a fan of the series ever since. By the way - part of the OG fallout experience was reading the physical manual and referring to it a lot so it would have been fine if you did it yourself.

seeing more and more people going back to my generation's games is... kinda disheartening as a game dev. People complain about inclusion and diversity, so we try to give them inclusion and diversity... people complain about sexism and making women characters only look sexy, so we try to make our woman characters look and act less sexy... people complain about able-ism so we try to include disabled characters... and then.. people go back to playing these old games. like.. wtf.. where's the diversity, inclusion, and equity in these old games? why complain about the new stuff not having that and then when we give it to you, you go back to playing titles that don't give you anything like that!? I had a coworker threaten us with "the lack of diversity shows you aren't taking this issue seriously and it's getting to a boiling point with me" directed at the lead of character concept art after he said they did discuss it (ie give me what I want or I'm going to throw a fit).... and was spouting all the shit going on in korea and gamer gate this and gate keeping that.... and more and more players are just... going back to the old games that didn't have any of what she was grandstanding about.

Still the best Fallout for not removing RPG elements like 3 and 4 did. And also for being the most immersive one, it took the post-nuclear thing much more seriously than Bethesda did with their games.
