This is my first time viewing your videos, and I like your garden tour. We are new to Texas and last year my garden was roasted by the heat , so I am hoping that this year its better. I am from the Caribbean and love to garden . I am currently getting ready to plant the starts I grew. To-morrow is getting the corn into the bed along with the tomatoes, and peppers. I must admit that at our ages in the mid 70s , we are taking moving a bit slower. and we are trying to do raised metal beds as the beds hubby built are beginning to fall apart. Our 100year old green house bit the dust in the storms of last year. Ninette Bird- The Caribbean Wife, Cameron - Tx

Never too late to get into gardening. Definitely take it slow. Sorry to hear about the metal raised beds not working out. Where are yall moving from?

Be careful with the rebar sticking out of the castle blocks. I had a piece of metal similar sticking out and I tripped on a cinder block and nearly impaled myself, God was watching over me that day. Maybe you can put a rubber cap on it

Oh wow! will do. So far we haven't had that "luck" of doing so but will take better precaution now. How is your garden doing this year so far?

Hi Sidney & Tori😊 More chicken😊 Good to test older seeds for germination. I found a volunteer planting of Japanese Pumpkin, it’s so exciting when you find them under the leaves, remembering we are at opposite growing times in Sydney Australia onions and garlic with potatoes is what I’m growing in beds with onions to transplant into main garden bed saves extra weeding.😊 That compost will come in handy for the gardens later, the rudiments can dig holes, I’m sure the eat the worms too, but they do airate your compost piles is the upside. Love the walking Onions, you can seperate them into smaller bunches, once you collect the bulbets.😊 Garlic like onions are heavy feeders until they start bulking stop fertilising 😊 Peppers are in season now tomatoes have basically finished, oh tip for asparagus don’t pick too many one 2nd or even 3 year that allows plant to establish better. Homegrown foods tastes better.😊
@TheNakidGardeners9 ай бұрын
Yea I think I need to check one of the garlic to see how the bulbs are going. I forgot when we even planted them, I think it was in late Nov. A volunteer Japanese Pumpkin? interesting. Was it grown for aesthetics or to consume?
@rickthelian22159 ай бұрын
@@TheNakidGardeners consumer, they use the seeds in.eating salted and non salted amongst other types of Pumpkin, it’s popular in the Middle East, where you buy them mostly in Middle Eastern Stores. It’s also sold in Supermarkets and Greengrocers as a fresh Pumpkin here in Australia.$3 kilo. It made its way to my compost bin when I cared for the elderly people across the road he ate the seeds and I took the compost home every week and that’s how it comes up near my compost bins. You guys got a lot done today. I like to incorporate flowers with the food I grow in the garden 🪴 Creating compost is a lot of work-I don’t think about the making part just the finished product. Thx for sharing your garden.

Yes making compost is a lot of work. But once it is finished it is great that we don't have to have to purchase it from the big box stores. Thanks for stopping by and watching.

140 that's a lot of chicken. We see y'all dropping melons. We dropped pumpkin seeds also. Your brooder is huge!! That's going to be some good compost. We are terrible at growing tomatoes 🍅. Nice looking strawberries. Y'all are getting it done over there. Keep Pushing
@TheNakidGardeners9 ай бұрын
Yea that brooder can hold up to about 250 chicks for three weeks before sending them out to grass. We plan on sending our birds to the processor Jun 14. We try to add a lot of organic matter to our compost. From chicken guts, dead animals, grass, leaves, clippings, ash from the smoker. Help with the biodiversity of the compost and make it nice and rich. Tomatoes is real easy after we learned that being in Texas we can't grow indeterminate tomatoes we had to grow determinate variety because it gets so hot and humid here. Thanks for stopping by. Stay dry this weekend. We are getting some good rain.
@deltorres21009 ай бұрын
Yes, I use those cages for my peppers just as well but I use them for the tomatoes is too. I’ll put a steak in it to help it. Stand better.
@TheNakidGardeners9 ай бұрын
Yea we use to try them for tomatoes but they would just get too bushy for the determinate varieties. We will eventually stake the peppers later. What peppers are you growing this season?

The Cosmo gets really tall and then it gives you blooms. I think those look like those probably be the purple ones. I got the star for sunflower ones as well but I’ve been growing for 20 years. I saved the seeds… (Houston)

I put beer traps all over my garden for the Roley poleys this year. They are SO bad but the traps help.

If I wanted to do a no till garden (which I tried to do, believe you me.) I'd have to make raised beds with brought in soil that has no weed seeds. Asparagus doesn't have to reseed but grows from its roots by spreading. I had asparagus until the grass took over, so I ripped them out and created a 4x4 bed in its place that I can dig up to remove all grass and weeds. If I didn't have an infestation of grasshoppers every year I'd have a garden like yours. If that fig is grafted, you will want to remove the growth down at the ground. All grafted trees want to grow branches at the ground and have to be cut off. Not sure about figs though.
@TheNakidGardeners9 ай бұрын
What happened with the no-till garden? Yea, we grew our asparagus from crown last year. We hope the seeds are the ones that just continue the growth of them. Yea we had an infestation with grasshoppers and locusts each year. One of the reason why I wanted to plant so many alums and flowers to help bring some beneficial bugs and animals to go after them. Might bring the bird bath and put a bird house around the garden to help with the issue. Thanks for the feedback. Hope you try no-till again.
@MickSupper9 ай бұрын
@@TheNakidGardeners The main reason I stopped was because of the grasshoppers. Just now getting back to gardening after about 4 years. Starting with only a 4x4 section, but something is better than nothing. .

would it make sense to clean out the brooders right after you remove the chickens so that the wood has a chance to air out and dry out as well as be able to add to your compost piles sooner?
@TheNakidGardeners9 ай бұрын
We moved the chickens out that saturday and did the video the following day. We allowed it to air for a day and then sprayed some chicken coop freshener in there.
