Definitely a heavy thing, even for those who are trained (former martial artist here). Actually, not so heavy (I made a search and found that the tube itself weighs only 14.75 kg, the lightest 12" SC by far, so the mount itself weighs 12.5 kg), but bulky, it is the volume who makes things difficult, most of the times. Really love this telescope, whish I could have it, despite it doesn't have a mirror lock like the LX200. It would be a great pair with a e.g CEM70 or a NYX 101. I believe it would be probably better if you were to use a dew heater (plus the dew shield) instead of the dew shield only.

Tsula, love your videos! You are AWESOME! For the Telrad mount - I use the iphone dash-mount pads which aren’t glue or permanent but that material holds the Telrad base in place. I also use a velcro from Harbor Freight that I wrap around the OTA to secure the Telrad from falling off. This works and does not put sticky foam tape on the OTA. There are some other tricks with the velcro straps but too long for this comment. This works for me. Hope it helps. Thanks.
@Cgconst14 күн бұрын
More details on velcro straps for Telrad bases: Cut the smartphone dash pad to match the foam tape dimensions of the Telrad base and place the pad and base on the OTA in correct location. Get some Velcro brand hook and loop velcro. Cut 2 pieces of the hook part to fit and adhere on the Telrad base across the top of the base on both ends of the base between the connection points for the Telrad. Get the $7 roll of velcro from Harbor Freight that has hook and loop on both sides. Connect the Harbor velcro loop (soft side)to the hook strip on the Telrad base and wrap it around the OTA taught and then press the velcro to the top of the Telrad base hook strip. The soft side or loop side of the velcro is facing and touching the OTA surface so it won’t harm it. You get a stable and secure Telrad base which is also easily removable if ever needed. Hope this helps.

There are many mice...around my neighbourhood...so I never thought to look for 'em in the sky.🤣🤣🤣 I don't use my ol' (vintage 1981) Celestron 8 much anymore. My island of O'ahu has enormous amounts of light pollution. Sadly, I don't live on the North Shore (opposite from Honolulu), where skies can get a littl(e darker. One of the coolest things I've ever seen was down near Le'ahi (Diamond Head). One winter, nature FORGOT to throw a lot of clouds at the south horizon, and I was once able to spot what Stellarium said was Alpha Centauri. The magic of latitude! This year, a lady WAS able to photograph the Aurora Borealis with her mobile phone here. She said she couldn't see it with her Mark 1 eyeball, though. I don't know...perhaps she's the first person to see those things here since...when?...the Carrington Event of 1859? The literature of the time says that was possible that year. I'm glad you got the see those Northern Lights. During the times I lived in the UK and Germany and other northerly, I didn't see 'em. I'll bet you feel blessed...I certainly would, too. Aloha and clear skies to you, Tsula!
@tsulasbigadventures4 күн бұрын
Thank you. Well, I will never see Alpha Centauri from 45 degrees. So that's pretty neat you saw that from where you are. It was miraculous to see the aurora from own driveway and I do feel blessed. Sorry to hear about the light pollution there but that is amazing to see Northern Lights in Hawaii! That is so cool. Do they allow public observing from Mauna Kea? Now that is dark. Clear skies to you too.
@jimcabezola30514 күн бұрын
@@tsulasbigadventures I don't believe they do allow personal tours up to Mauna Kea anymore, Tsula. As you may have heard, we are losing a lot of the telescopes on that mountain, because some Hawaiian cultural practitioners have declared Mauna Kea sacred. They believe that the University of Hawai'i Board of Trustees have been insensitive to traditional Hawaiian culture by allowing ANY telescopes at all to be constructed on ANY mountain in Hawai'i. We've been building them since I was a kid here in the 1960s. So, eventually, all the world famous and scientifically-vital instruments (Keck, etc...) will be removed from Hawai'i. It's my personal opinion that the proposed 30-meter scope (TMT) will not be built there in future, either. We had a big, high-tension, media frenzy over it over a decade ago. People stood there and stopped the bulldozers and whatnot from breaking ground on the new 'scope. Last month, the USAF Pan-STARRS facility was denied permission to add more meteor/comet watching scopes on Haleakala on the island of Maui. I've not yet heard of any agitprop advocating for the removal of these potentially life-saving instruments, but I won't be surprised if such calls for demolition of even these telescopes ring out in due course. My personal feeling growing up here was that Hawaiians were so happy and proud of their ancestors who were...and ARE...superb celestial navigators. I'm given to believe the ancient Hawaiians loved the stars. Who could blame them? That's why I can't understand this opposition to scientific efforts to see and understand the stars through these various instruments. An ancient Hawaiian would go nuts just looking at the stars through some (optically-stabilised?) binoculars, let alone a multi-meter-wide telescope. Alas...I am not culturally equipped to understand it all. Revel in your skies and enjoy the views your instruments provide you. Aloha, Tsula!

Can't in all fairness compare a standard C8 to a meade ACF. You would need to get an edge HD. I had one of the original pre lawsuit USA versions of the meade LX200R optical tubes, and yeah it beat most c8s. But the older standard 8" meade SCTs didnt perform as well as the R/ACF scopes, while the nexstar C8s are chinese made versions of the classic c8 design, which tended to be a little sharper than the meades, cherries aside.
@k.h.15878 күн бұрын
Comparing chinese dobs to aplanatic scts is not a fair comparison. Compare a premium 12" dob with a curved spider and a paracorr and you might change your tune. The premium dob can go to just as high power, can have a smaller secondary obstruction, but it can do what an sct can't, it has twice or more field of view, which is where even the Chinese 12" dobs, with a paracorr, can give as good an image with twice the field of view (since low power doesn't need as precise optics). But again, an obsession, or even a discovery dob will have optics far superior to mass produced chinese dobs, and can beat an SCT for optical quality any day of the week. Comparing an excellent meade sct to a mass produced chinese dob, does not speak for reflectors and dobsonians as a whole, only the lowest common denominator of that scope type.
@k.h.15878 күн бұрын
The handles are not in the best spot when compared to the CPC1100, which has high on one side, and low on the other, which makes it much easier to lift onto the tripod, which is also better designed than the meade field tripod, easier to mount as well as being easier to lift. You lose an inch, but it is also much more stable than the 10 and 12" lx90s. I do like the concept of the lx90, and the price, but you have to admit they can be a little shakey in the larger sizes.

Wrong on those dates, 1980 was starbright, not starbright xlt. Edge hd came out in 2009 not 2000. Synta is based in china not taiwan. Meade mexico started in the mid late 2000s not 1999

USA and UK citizens are very spoilt when it comes to used astronomical equipment. There so much more used stock available at very good prices compared to 3rd world backwater countries. Where I live Craigslist doesn't exist but Facebook Marketplace seems to be the place to find stuff and after about a year of waiting, I managed to pick up my first telescope for the equivalent of $160 USD. It's a 1980's orange tube, fork mount, Celestron C8 with EQ wedge and tripod. It has a couple of dents, some missing bolts and the 6x30 finder scope is also missing but not a big loss as those finders are not great to start with in a light polluted sky. After some TLC and replacing missing bolts it looks like a good buy and the optics seem great to my untrained eye. A 8x50 or 9x50 RACI finder scope can be had for less than $150 new or even less used and is a big upgrade over the straight-through 6x30 finder scope. A new Celestron 8 SCT OTA (without a mount) sells for around $1350 so paying < $310 for an close equivalent but still including an EQ mount (good enough for visual and planetary astrophotography) seems like a good deal to me. My suggestion before buying a used telescope on a tight budget is, do some research first (www.cloudynights.com is an excellent resource), be willing to perform some repairs and then be very patient. At some point, someone nearby with an astronomy habit has to eventually die of old age. ☺
