This is part three of my series on great targets suitable for a Dobsonian telescope. I cover ten targets, how to find them, important information about them, and provide a sketch of what they might look like in your Dobsonian. The targets covered are in the constellations Orion, Eridanus, Monoceros, Gemini and Auriga and include some tight double stars, star clusters, reflection and emission nebulae and planetary nebulae.

My southern sky is ripe with astronomy targets. I recently discovered, just by scanning the sky with a 90mm refractor, both M41 and M42, and h3945, the "Winter Alberio", a stunning blue and gold double star system. Thanks Tsula, this channel is one of my favorites.

Thank you! I thought about including the Winter Albireo but there are so many beautiful double stars in winter that it was hard to choose.

Thanks for another fantastic video. It's a clear night out here, just looked up at Orion and Jupiter without a telescope before watching this. Unfortunately the winds are strong - I don't think my 12" would fare well in these conditions.

Thank you! Well, I hope the wind dies down for you soon so you can get out your 12" and take advantage of the clear skies. Thanks for watching.

Nice video, with an interesting mix of objects - I couldn't help wondering, though, what the Pleiades look like through a large telescope. They must be stunning.

In a large telescope the Pleiades almost brings tears to my eyes but you need to have an eyepiece that will allow the lowest magnification possible and then it will just barely fit into the field of view.

@@tsulasbigadventures I remember astonishing a boyhood friend of mine, back in the days when I had a small Tasco, by pointing it at the Pleiades without telling him anything about them. He thought for a moment that the entire sky had a similar appearance through a telescope.

I think I am going to try for some of the objects tonight. And thanks for telling me about Melotte 31. I am familiar with those stars but did not know it had a name. I just called it "the wall".

Good luck tonight. Those stars are not actually related. It's really just an asterism but it sure is pretty, especially 16 Aurigae which is sort of reddish.

@@tsulasbigadventures I'm out now trying with a 4 inch frac. I am trying to see the pup in Sirius but it seems to be a real hard one. I was just able to see all 6 stars in the Trapizium.

@@lornaz1975 That's great you saw all six stars in the Trapezium; that's pretty hard to do. But the Pup! Is very difficult and you have to try to see it when it is in a favorable position. Did you try to split 52 Orionis? That one is tough.
@lornaz1975

@@tsulasbigadventures Right now the Pup is in the best position to see it. As for 52 Orionis I don't know if you could say I split it but I was able to get it to elongate. I think I did split or almost split 32 Orionis. I think the term is kissing double so they were separate but touching.

@@lornaz1975 Oh great. I didn't know the Pup was in the favorable position tonight but it's snowing here so there was no chance for me to see it tonight but I have seen the Pup one time before. I'll have to check out 32 Orionis before the end of winter. Congratulations!

You should pronounce it Betel-gais like the scientists do 😊
@tsulasbigadventures
@tsulasbigadventures 4 ай бұрын
I've never heard it pronounced that way. According to space dot com it's pronounced BET-el-jooz but they don't say who their authority is. It's an Arabic word and according to someone else the Arabic pronunciation is something like yad-al-jaws-ah.
