WHY BEGINNER AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS SHOULD ATTEND STAR PARTIES

One of the best things you can do if you are a budding amateur astronomer is join your local astronomy club and attend a star party. At the star party you will be able to try out various telescopes and find out what you can expect to see in telescopes of various sizes and types. You will meet people who can and will share their knowledge with you. You will learn a lot and your club will most likely have telescopes that they will let you borrow. In this episode I attended my first star party, a beginner's star party, where I volunteered to be a mentor. I offered advice and helped some beginners and met some long time amateur astronomers where I learned a lot as well.

i understand what you mean when i got into the hobby in 93 i didn't drive & iam also in the city so a car is not always needed. I did drive for 5 or 6 yrs 15 years later but then again lost licence(long story). As you say which is true here too is you need a car to get to the star parties which not all can do. Even the once-a-month star parties in the city by thew science center would be tough to carry a scope and tripod over an hour away to stay 1.5 hrs then to go back again by buss again an hour is probably too hard that i NEVER done it I just like the fack i can just do it from my backyards and when iam done its 20 ft back inside. There are people that are like it but it just was never me Cheers

Star parties are a great experience. They are great opportunities to meet other people in the hobby and learn new tricks. Sadly, I live far away from any club and only attend once a year. Idaho Star Party....Bortle 2. :)

The weather holds today and I’ll be attending my first “public observing” tonight. Looking forward to asking questions, and any tips offered. Definitely want to get more comfortable with star hopping.

I hope the weather holds for you because you will learn a lot. Amateur astronomers are always more than willing to share their knowledge with beginners and can help you with the star hopping for sure.

Well, it's that dark you should have your own star party and invite people to wherever you are!

Thanks for sharing this, Tsula! That area looks really beautiful. I have yet to attend a star party, but I really want to. People always seem to have great things to say about them. I'm sorry about the aftermath of this one for you. Any progress on recovering your items? Did you get to see the eclipse?

Hi Greg: Thanks. The sheriff called me and was asking me some questions about that sketchy tire store and he told me he has some leads. So, I'm hopeful they catch those you know whats. On the eclipse--yessssssssssssssssssssss. No wait: hell yeah.

@@tsulasbigadventures Yes, it was really great! My plan to get some video with my AT60 failed miserably, but I got some partial, a few totality, shots with my DSLR. I also set up my big binoculars and my granddaughters got a big kick out of looking through those. We had a nice time. Didn't get my SVX90T in time, but it came the next day and all I can say is, "Good grief, what an amazing scope!" I was able to do a little visual observing with it, and I was astounded to find out that it really wasn't my eyes causing the spikes on stars, because they were pinpoint. I was also able to image for about an hour with it and the stars and detail are just magnificent.

@@gregerianne3880 Great. That sounds really nice except for the AT60 failure. Yes, that SVX90 is an incredible scope.
