Don’t use reflextix to insulate from heat. I melted and distorted my Lewmar hatch. The reflextix reflects the suns intense heat back on the hatch material. I googled this and airplanes also melted their windows when using a reflextix material.
@seven_o_savage2 күн бұрын
That’s a good call. It’s weird because there is a reflective material on the back side of the lewmar branded shade
@tshelley42322 күн бұрын
My boat hatch doesn’t have a shade built in. The hatch material is some kinda acrylic glass. I stuck a piece of reflextix up into the hatch to keep the sun and heat from getting in. I just looked and my hatch is a Bomar marine hatch. Not the Lewmar.

I used Sika 710 as its made exactly for this where you have a mechanical fixing. Many adhesives have issues over time with plastics (especially for any adapter made from HDPE) and/or if you need to remove the adapter, it will be a pain with an adhesive. I also made an adapter for the underside so metal was clamped between two adapters. Also, having used machine screws I would use plastic/self tapping screws next time as there are less holes from inside to outside if all the holes are close/blind.

Hello. I have to replace a 14” x 14” fan that was leaking and rusted badly right up to the rib. I have to cut a bigger hole. Do you think this could mount right up to the rib with no issues?
@seven_o_savage3 күн бұрын
Yep as long as you have enough room between rib and the edge of the hole for the screws

I’ve been wrestling with what type of galley counter top material to use in my Sprinter and notice you’ve been using butcher block, being said I’ve been told to stay away from it because of warping due to wide swings in temps and humidity. What is your experience with it and would you continue to use it in future projects?
@seven_o_savage3 күн бұрын
I haven’t had any warping issues yet. Planning on using one again in this van

Youve cut lots of van holes. You must have big confidence taking a jigsaw to the metal. Do you like the skylight quality for 600+ Id like to compare a marine skylight too Send people to the store with a picture

Fill those cross-beams with spray foam. Have plenty of holes to relieve pressure and trim when cured. This will deny it acting as a conduit to bring cold in and avoid condensation due to heat rising and collecting where not visible post-build.
@NeverBeDaunted5 күн бұрын
Be neat to have a ladder inside the van to climb on the roof. Guess this answers whether you were going with a pop top. Fitting in the garage likely influences that decision some.
@morgananderson96475 күн бұрын
Looks Outstanding! Did you consider using butyl tape to help in the waterproofing of the screws and top bolts? This is often used in marine applications where waterproofing is important. It's easier to work with and functions really well. M-

Meant to ask you, is there a technical reason the hatch lid has to be hinged in the front? My reason for considering a hatch instead of a fan is access to the solar panels (for cleaning) from inside the van. Space constraints would make it necessary that the hatch is hinged on the rear.
@seven_o_savage5 күн бұрын
Nope, just felt it made more sense angled toward the back in case I forgot to close it before driving.

I installed that exact marine hatch skylight in my van 4 years ago. It's been great. I use it to access my roof so I don't need a ladder.

A lower van with a giant low profile marine hatch where I need to stand is a central idea behind my next build! Any security concerns if you can open it from outside?

Yes it’s truly an amazing feature. I see myself drinking coffee up out of the skylight. Nope you can lock the outside opening latches

“Bedding Compound” is usually Butyl Tape that allows expansion and contraction of dissimilar materials to remain sealed while still being removable if needed. You mentioned something about not using something due to thickness that would prevent lid from closing?
@seven_o_savage5 күн бұрын
I was strongly considering butyl tape before I decided 221. I just haven’t had experience using butyl without sealant on top and I didn’t want to do both. Most people use lap sealant for their fans, which is what I would have used in the case, but it’s too thick.
@dmwi15495 күн бұрын
I installed my MAX Fans using Hein’s DIY Vans custom spacer. So worth it! Didn’t know he has similar for these marine hatches. DIY adapter was glued to top of scuffed van with Hein recommend sealant. Then Butyl between roof adapter and fan base. Then lap sealant over the top of screws in a monolithic self leveling “pour” to the top of the van’s scuffed paint roof. Lap sealant encapsulates ALL the layers and parts. Now that I think about it, maybe that is where Lewmar doesn’t have the space to close of you hi to thick with lap sealant. The good news is your skylight is stick well and sealed. If a leak starts die to expansion/contraction you can always break out the lap sealant. I did not know they made those with the built in shade/screen. Brilliant! May have to remove a max fan and install one myself!
@dmwi15495 күн бұрын
Love the skylight. Much lower profile than others I’ve seen. Couldn’t see if nylon locking portion in the nuts were engaged? If not, the nuts could back off. It would still be possible to add longer screws. They are completely sealed on sides. Just back them out and dab some sealant on top after you install and cut the extra length inside with your Dremel cutoff wheel.

Curios about the sound deadening material installed. Why not use a larger amount in the areas you chose to place them? Is the movement occuring within that location as apposed to the outer area? I'm imagining that if I were to press that area you placed the material, that's were more movement occurs.

The solar panels aren't covered so those wires are live. I also noticed you're getting shade on the panels from the roof rack itself.
@nwlady184414 күн бұрын
thank you sooo much!!
@blurglide15 күн бұрын
I have an idea. Have your roof rack on slides so your solar panels become an awning. They could even rotate down a little for drainage and to point the panels at the sun. Then have a roll up radiant barrier that makes another awning for the roof of your van. Boom- now you have more solar power and far less heat load.
