I have to say or ask, do you not watch Temps? I'm surprised you're not watching the exhaust temp and coolant temp. I would say those are the two most important sensors.... shoot, I would even go as far to say it's more important than RPM shift lights. Bummer, anyway, hope you get it back on track or have already. Looks like a lot of fun.

There are a LOT of old guys in G125. Some are right out of CIK125 or Pro but most are just there for the fun. They really should have a "Super G class that is over 55. G is only over 35 and thats not old!!!! LOL!!! I bought one for the track days, didn't intend to race it but you never know. I wish I had turned the cam on for the last run, I was much more comfortable with the traffic and the track and was driving much more aggressively....... because they were all at the fence watching!!!

Don’t make fun of the old stuff!! Can’t tell….Mac? Pirelli? IKF Jr Reed. WestCoast.?Scott Pruett buried our class. Unlimited today….would have been FKE (formula kart experimental) or C-Open. My FKE ran a Kaw. 650 Tri. - off the Widow Maker. Karts were heavy in those days…..from tubing to wheels (nylite)was new. No titanium….aluminum very rare except fuel tanks and floors. Live axels weighed aTON. All oil bath cintrif clutches Motors ran some concoction of gas/nitro/alcoh…..with Castrol R….the king of bean oil. Oh the smell. Wow. Walk down memory lane. Thx.

All im gonna say is ive never raced a 2cycle thats tuned to idle.. and race, its either or.. quiet making the engine run in the pit and only worry about making it run good on track. The fact that it idles without you in it to me mean your focusing on the wrong part of tuning, which is what our engine needs on track to perform, probabaly doesnt help that your starter is inboard. but notice when you had it tuned to idle it would leave.. because idle and race performance are tuned for completely different end of the rpm band also the random bogs are a result as well, probably entirely to lean because you tuned it to idle
@VortexdriverRPM
@VortexdriverRPM Жыл бұрын
Tyler, we lean the Low end needle to make it idle so we don't have to "babysit" the kart while it warms up. You'll notice I open the needle before taking off.

Funny you mention that. All of us have bad backs from lifting these karts for 40 years! 2 years ago I had spinal fusion surgery (L4-L5) after lifting this kart out of the trailer onto a stand!!!! Where are the fuel tank ??
@VortexdriverRPM
@VortexdriverRPM Жыл бұрын
One either side of the driver! They are aluminum, and are great for absorbing energy in case of an accident. They have been built this way for 50 years or more with almost no incident of fire. This being a "Vintage" kart from the mid 80's is quite different from the modern full body karts of today. Modern karts use "nerf bars" under the bodywork with plastic or small aluminum tanks for fuel.

It's cool to see the two methods of strategy with how the body is shaped Either streamlined for higher straight line speeds or more aggressive, giving more downforce and higher cornering speeds

The red kart had a 250 single cylinder engine. Not quite twice the power but much more torque than our Stock 125 for sure. The aerodynamic advantage here at Daytona is huge as you can see. It would be very hard for me to run with that type of kart at say Mid-Ohio. Not imposable, just very tough. Thanks for looking in!

Is it comfortable to adjust the high and low jets while driving?
@VortexdriverRPM
@VortexdriverRPM Жыл бұрын
Not really, at least not the way this engine/carb is set up. There are "remote adjusters", its an old school Automotive speedo cable with machined aluminum ends and its located up on your steering wheel. That way you dont have to look away from where you are going. At the time we shot this I was just shaking down the kart, we had just bought it.

I've watched a bunch of your videos now of both the flathead and the f125 and man it has got to be a mind trip going back and forth between the two, the flatty seems alot more momentum based and you seem to want to keep the throttle flat as much as possible
@VortexdriverRPM
@VortexdriverRPM 2 жыл бұрын
Guys laugh at that Flat head kart but its not simply gas on and turn. It may not be blindingly fast but its still faster than the grip of the tires in some corners. Getting off the throttle will kill your momentum but so will drifting the tires. I have not driven it enough to work it out completely but a bit of brake riding is the answer to it. In very slow corners you just have to deal with the lack of power.

They race bikes and cars on this circuit as well. Hitting ANYTHING in a kart is going to hurt, but, I have seen some horrific looking wrecks and the drivers were not injured other than some bruises and scrapes. Other times, and very few, we have had folks air lifted out, and, some don't make it. I lost my best friend at 15 to a crash at Road America. He was a very talented kid and probably would have gone on to be very successful as a big time race car driver. It happens, but, its really only as dangerous as you make it.

Great run....looks fun. May I ask how much did your cart cost and are there any restrictions on the Kart in the Unlimited class?
@VortexdriverRPM
@VortexdriverRPM 2 жыл бұрын
Exact cost is hard to determine, many components are hand made on these karts. I would guess $7-9 thousand could build one of these complete ready to run. Any restriction per class is in the Sanctioning Body rule book. The rules vary by region/Series but for this kart really just bore & stroke/engine displacement.

Could have uses a little taller gear. You ate his lunch in the turns and he ate your on the straight. Your kart was the best handling on the track.
@VortexdriverRPM
@VortexdriverRPM 2 жыл бұрын
The Black kart has a TM K9 engine, mine has the Vortex RVS and the yellow/orange kart has a Pavesi. All models from near the same homologation period BUT.... the Pavesi has a "gear" in the gearbox the other brands do not. Our 6th gear is equal to their 5th gear..... when they shift to 6th they really have an overdrive so to speak. Its not as simple as gearing our axle and engine "taller", which we do, with tire circumference and engine/axle gearing. But again, there is a sweet spot per the track layout AND most importantly where the finish line is located! All these things have to do with our final gear selection as that will effect performance everywhere. As you may have seen, we beat the fast guy to the line so I think our set-up selection was as good as we could hope at that time. Thanks for looking in!!!!!

Trevor, for some reason I can see your post but can't reply directly to it. This particular kart is "Vintage", no bodywork or floor tray like the modern karts. It is also called (vintage or modern) an Enduro Kart or a "laydown kart. This kart has a Yamaha 100cc Kart specific engine and an oil cooled centrifugal clutch on the rear axle. They run on auto/bike racing circuits of 1.5 miles in length or longer.
@BennHerr
@BennHerr 2 жыл бұрын
Looks like a fun ride. Took him about two corners to figure the kart out. Probably add a tooth or two to the axle and try to get the rpm to 6000 but he would also get faster as he fine tunes the fast lines. More teeth would help to heavier drivers too. At 6K life on the engine should be good. Just change the oil often and make sure things don't come loose.
@VortexdriverRPM
@VortexdriverRPM 2 жыл бұрын
We took a guess at it derived from the Animal gearing. We started with the OHV gear, added 6T to the rear after the first runs on the Flathead, and still have yet to see 6K with a 150 lb guy in the car. We need to drop teeth on the clutch, it has 20 T currently. All good info, thanks for the insight! Brian Carlson said 6500 max on a box stocker in road race form. We need to invest in some parts!!!!!

You was very fast in the draft on the oval part but once y'all got into the infield you looked really tight on entry in slower corners that sucks cuse if you would have been faster in the infield and just as fast on oval you would have been up front but awesome driving and balls of steal. This is crazy 140 mph on a go kart is nuts and I thought doing 90mph in one on a asphalt oval drafting I was doing was craZy I gotta do this some day

This is an F-125. Italian purpose made Karting engine, 125cc, 6 gears, electronic "shift-no-lift", top speed (best so far) 140. Once we get either THIS carb worked out or replace it with something that does, it should go faster than that yet. We test in April!!!

@VortexdriverRPM

Yes, although we have an open fuel and carb/porting/ignition rule for this class in this clip its still ICC or KZ legal configuration. 30mm carb, OEM PVL analog ignition, standard CCV, OEM porting, etc. The only bits NOT ICC/KZ legal or standard are the M4 titanium silencer, electric water pump, air filter with NO airbox. I do retard the Ignition timing from Std but that is not an ICC/KZ issue.

Mirrors have been a no-no in karting for as long as I can remember. They were used to block others behind and deemed dangerous. We kinda have our hands full looking ahead, what is behind doesn't matter. The "overtaking" kart/driver is responsible to do it safely.

I remember my first drafting pass, I almost pee'd my pants. It looks like you gained 2 mph by just tucking your left hand down.
