It was great to be part of this team. So much knowledge and a shared commitment to doing a better job. Moving beyond the words that "our people are our greatest asset" to actually managing the organization to make the words a reality.

Very useful insights for data centric problem solving. Is MS Excel a good tool for organizing data, its presentation and analysis or do we need specialized softwares for that?
@HeatherWhiteman
@HeatherWhiteman 9 ай бұрын
Excel is a fantastic tool for organizing data, presentation, and basic analysis. It's user-friendly, widely available, and you can do tons of things in it. However, for really large datasets or complex analysis, I would recommend specialized software (like Tableau or Power BI) or learning to code in R or Python to be more efficient.

Thanks for explaining a holistic approach to data centered problem solving. Your way of presenting confusing and complex concepts is unambiguous and interesting at the same time. It further gives food for thought to the way I approach my daily work routine. Any People or HR Analytics certification which you'd like to recommend to HR professionals?

Glad you liked the video. Yes, there are a lot of HR Analytics certifications available today. I offer people analytics in the Rutgers Certificate in Human Resources Analytics (execed.rutgers.edu/programs-for-individuals/human-resources-management/human-resources-analytics-essentials-certificate/) and there are many others that are very good and taught by other fantastic experts in the field.

Hey Heather is there any difference between industrial and organisational psychology?
@HeatherWhiteman
@HeatherWhiteman Жыл бұрын
Hi Priyank, that's a great question. It sort of depends on who you ask and what organizations/university you are in. In some places there is a bit of difference and people will joke about whether they are an "I" or an "O" with the industrial side being a bit more focused on measurement and assessments, and the organizational side being a bit more focused on things like leadership, motivation, and culture. But even in places where they do treat them as different, the topics under each can be very different from what I've just described. I don't think the difference between the two is really present in the applied world and I think the two tend to overlap a lot in what they do. I'm sure different people would have a different answer to this question though.

@@HeatherWhiteman Hey heather I'm 18 year's old boy who want to become an i/o psychologist . So I'm going to pursue my bachelor's in psychology hons in one year from now . But I'm confused about my masters as some private universities mentioned their pg course as masters in organizational psychology only . They didn't mention industrial psychology there . Is that means their masters program is differ from masters in industrial/ organizational psychology ?

If you broaden the concept of organizational psychology into organizations, even if not in the workplace.... there exists an overlay of information which helps dive back into the workplace with better depth and breadth of understandings. Granted, workplace and consulting tends to bring in the actual contracting and revenue... it is also how and where the differential between EAP and employee benefits and those of the rest of the family or community group. These things matter... Further, there are many many various groups of people and/or factions (for lack of a better word) embedded within any organizations. The process of working together and community culture and also bringing the distinct ability and needs of disagreement in productive fashion is vital to the health of any organization. This is the large scale reality and wealth of Value of diversity in all its forms.

Hmm, I think I disagree. If your point is that SWE is blue collar because society relies on it then so are physicist and other engineers. We need them to build the complicated infrastructure of those computers and to figure out how to develop better tech. I see software engineers in the same light. We’re needed to build the software that all these people use and we’re needed to make better software too. I don’t see a plumber in the same light. Yes, they are essential to modern society, but they aren’t typically the ones responsible for developing better plumbing equipment. That’s typically left to engineers (perhaps even physicists). There is less education required for entry level jobs yes, but you’ll still need to know the same things that a CS student would know (strictly) in relationship to developing software. For example, you’ll need to know about space and time complexity, data structures and algorithms. Especially if you want to work in FAANG+ and make the big bucks. I honestly see software as the one true field to get the education requirements right. If you can prove you know your stuff then we will give you an equal chance as everyone else at an entry level job. I think that all jobs should be like that. Maybe even surgeons. Of course, you’ll want some qualifications just like SWE requires you to have a strong portfolio and a stringent interview process to prove your skills. What if someone did all the studying of a medical school student, only they did it themselves using alternative resources instead of college, and could do everything just as good as an actual medical school student, and wanted to train under a surgeon and then go into their own practice in the distant future (the equivalent of a staff or distinguished engineer at FAANG+). Should this person be denied the right to entry? As of now they are. Maybe this is robbing the world of some truly great surgeons. We will never know. You can say the same thing about any field. In fact, a 17 year old student recently solved an incredibly hard math proof that when reviewed by a top level professor of mathematics was proven correct and the professor said the 17 year old would be a top level PhD student. I think that college isn’t as needed as it used to be and that is just a trend in general. It’s just that tech gets the most out of using alternative resources as the medium to access these alternative resources are shared on our native area of expertise, software related technology. But in theory you could apply the same rules to anything. You’d need to adjust the “controls” for each profession of course, but it can be done. I think it should be done too. And it looks like it will be in the future.

Heather, thank you greatly for these videos! I have been interested in applying to IO for a few years now, first at Chicago School (in LA) and now working at Kaiser Permanente, through GCU, which will be partially paid. I am fully convinced that my delay in pursuing the PhD program was justifiable, and I will instead pursue the Masters. It's completely online. I do have an MBV though USC as well, a pilot program that incorporates military experience and discipline with business acumen. Again, thanks!
