I now have a couple cultures of Grindal worms, thanks for all of your tips! People have recommended baking the substrate and the food to control mites, that is what I have done and so far so good! After that I store the food in a Ziploc bag inside the fridge. Thanks for sharing all of your tips, especially keeping the cultures away from each other! I mite have to start doing that!! 😉😎👍

@@djrramsey Thanks David, but I think the major reason the mites are everywhere here is that I live in Florida. Which is an insect utopia. I have started with absolutely clean cultures of washed grindals from new cultures that APPEARED to be mite free only to have them appear within days.
@djrramsey
@djrramsey Күн бұрын
@@tvideo1189 Florida is tough. Try a couple of small pieces of mosquito bits in the culture for a day or so. The mosquito bits is a type of BT and says it kills mites. Leave too long and it will really set back the grindals. Just a very small amount for a couple of days will really do damage to the mites and the grindals will hardly notice. Just remember to take the stuff out in a day or so.

@@djrramsey Thank you. I saw your recommendation for those in one of your earlier videos. I tried it, but perhaps I used too many. The culture STILL developed mites (and some other tiny insects) and the grindals, as you said, did not do well.

Hey Dave a quick question can you just swap lids on the containers when you start a new culture?
@djrramsey
@djrramsey 2 күн бұрын
You can, but I do not think the worms will crawl back down to the media. So you will still need to wash them off the lid. I usually transfer some of the media that is loaded with worms to the new container. Then I replace that open spot with fresh media. That will keep the original culture going a lot longer with some fresh media.
@LawrenceLexAlexander
@LawrenceLexAlexander 4 күн бұрын
When you scrape the mesh to collect the worms doesnt that leave damaged ones still in the container? Do they die off and rot and pollute the culture causing it to crash faster?
@djrramsey
@djrramsey 2 күн бұрын
You would think that could be a problem but I have not seen it. If you are concerned, give the mesh a rinse into the container that you are already putting the worms to feed into.

Just to share another technique: I microwave mine. My thought is that nutrients might be getting diluted in the water, but I really don't know. Then I lay the beans out on a cookie sheet and pop them in the freezer. Once they are froze I can use a spatula to loosen them and put them into freezer bags. By freezing before baging, I have had less freezing together. I am glad to hear you are recovering your health! In your absence I found your channel. I love it! So very much useful information! I have several saved so that I can quickly refer back to them. Thank-you for making them!

1st of all, a stable PH cycled salinity saltwater. 2nd, only top up evaporated with fresh water or top up additional saltwater as in the video. 3rd, food is quite a problem either it is too much or too little. Food need to be a very very small particles which is able to dissolved as bbs is considered tiny enough. At the end of the day, it is not only the bbs that lives in the tank or bottle, we need to have good bacteria to clean up the water. When the water is clear, the bacteria is there assisting bbs. If the water is dirty or cloudy, it means the water unable to solve the food poisoning and watching bbs die in future as poison needs to take time to kill. Food Poison basically is the same food not able match with the water reaction. Moving water with airstone is to get the food reachable and mixing the food, while intensity of the light is the activeness of the bbs, while adding freshwater algae (not the green freshwater) to collect the dust of the food that bbs like to scratch. Try to maintain the first generation of bbs until giving birth or old, or probably you can see the largest size of bbs.

I found something really useful out. I kept having mould issues unless i added excess vinegar (and then it stank!). But looking at other guides they all suggested bakers yeast would solve mould. However only a few said how to actually use the yeast correctly. Do the same mix here (its perfect). Then in another cup add warm water (not boiling!) a little sugar and a teaspoon of bakers yeast. Give it a stir and let it sit for 20mins. Come back and take a teaspoon of the liquid and just put it on the top of this mix once its all made up. Dont mix it in, just drop it over the top. This will stop mould :)

I have used plant growing lights over my tanks for quite awhile now. Much better solution than those expensive Aquarium lights. You just need to be careful because some of them caution against using them over water, and some of them make too much heat over glass even though they are LED.

Been using similar lights by Barrina or Monios for quite a while now. They work well, and the only time I would go for a more expensive "aquarium light" is in a living room display tank where the aesthetic demands a cleaner look. Glad you finally found them. They are a great solution.

It seems so hard to find decent, safe,, full spectrum, cost effective, daisy chained lighting nowadays. Are these lights UL certified? <•))))~{

I'm using the same lighting, got the idea from TM Aquatics. What I do is use double side tape (the really strong 3M stuff) and mount the lights into a PVC rain gutter. it Keeps the lights from shining in my eyes and then they sit well on top of the tanks.

Many many years ago I was at a talk by Rosario LaCorte. He was talking about black worms and white worms and earthworms. I was new and asked how do I feed these foods to smaller fish. He said to cut them up. Did not make me feel like a complete idiot which would have been very easy to do. Even said he used a herb cutter (has about 5 blades) do chop up the worms. One great man who will be missed. I never had any success getting complete cuts with the herb cutter.
