The Galactic Empire is the German Empire that existed from 1870 to 1914. Compare the Empire to the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire as of the Franco-Russian War, with Otto von Bismarck being the inspiration behind Paul von Oberstein. The brilliance of Reinhard's faction is the General Staff innovation that Prussia invented post-Napoleon by Helmuth von Moltke, which is what allowed the Prussian Army (and thus the Imperial Navy of the Empire) to be so dominant when this man is in command. Reinhard himself, however, is inspired by Alexander the Great of Macedon and his Admiralty would be his Companions. The Free Planets Alliance is not the United States. It's a mismash of European Parliamentary states, including the UK. Yang, however, is inspired by a Korean hero: Yi Sun-sin (and his story is found in the invasion of Korea by Japan in 1592). The Alliance's venality and corruption mirrored both that of the real 19th century period as well as that of the present (at time of writing, at time of production, and yes today) complete with seeing popular figures and populism generally as a threat- and the use of religion as a cynical psyop mechanism of social control. With this in mind, go dig into the letters and journals of those historical men and their peers. The letters from soldiers on both sides of the Franco-Prussian War in particular will go a long way towards explaining why Reuenthal turned his coat against Reinhard after he got set up, why Kircheis' death deeply affected Reinhard and everyone else _on both sides_ until the very end, and why Yang was so copasetic about things- including his death. The saying is true: the past is a foreign country; they do things differently there. _You must engage with it as if it were a foreign culture because it is one._ Our author, Yoshiki Tanaka, is trained as a historian. He gets this. Everyone coming to LOGH would greatly benefit from (re)familiarizing yourselves with the real people, places, and events informing his creation- and to do the same for the author himself. Once you do, you will not have a hard time understanding why the story ends with the Empire in a clear--but fragile-place of total dominion over known space and the Alliance contained within its home system. That's a competent piece of historical analysis presented as the final notes of an epic story, _and he is not wrong in the least._

I also recommend to read the original novels! They're all translated to English (albeit the translation is kinda so-so, could have been better) and they do so much good for the characterization, not just for the major characters but also for the smaller ones

The politics in the original series are just so fascinating! And even more complex than you describe here. There's really no 'good' or 'bad' guys. The Free planets are a democracy, sure, but the series does a great job of showing the ways that democracy is subverted. A right-wing populist party winning its elections and then sliding into a full-on dictatorship under Job Trunicht. At several points, Yang Wenli has people begging him to stage his own coup, but he won't. He loves the ideal of democracy, and really, just wants a quiet life. Meanwhile, Reinhardt rises to the top of an insanely callous and decadent absolute monarchy through ruthless competence, scheming and manipulation. Then sets about destroying the nobility and reforming the nation into a benevolent dictatorship! Impressive! Only the cracks start to show with that too. Reinhardt is merciless and single minded. His fixation on ruling the whole galaxy starts to spread him too thinly, some of his advisors run wild and perpetrated atrocities and he's forced to simply accept and cover them up or damage his authority. He gets everything he ever wanted and loses all sense of perspective. He just doesn't have the temperament to rule in peacetime and the nation suffers. I think the thing the series demonstrates well, is that there's always a dark side regardless of the system of government. Regular people suffer and have their lives ruined because of flawed and careless leaders.

I came back to Eureka 7 after a long hiatus. I remember its debut on toonami and I was happy to start a new series. I ended up moving a lot and never go to watch it how I wanted. I recently picked back up on it and finished the 50 episodes. The ending wasn’t what I wanted truthfully. Breaks my heart I never get to see Renton and Eureka again after “becoming one.” The little cut scene of them in the forest doesn’t give the kid in me justice after missing this show so much with life throwing obstacles at me.

Lol not spoiling who betrays Reinhardt in the end but spoiling the best "war is evil" moments of the show is quite the performance. I think I remember the general betraying Reinhardt is presented as unscrutable even by the narration, I feel they were trying to make a point by lefting his reasons so ambiguous in a manner of saying "History just doesn't know" which would be in line with the show being framed as a historical chronicle of this war.

The reason I've always accepted as to why the guy turns on the Kaiser at the end is just that he snaps and goes crazy. He's portrayed as having bad relationships, a bad childhood and family life, abusive parents and generally a shitty life, so when he is doing a good job and was loyal to the kaiser and it keeps getting questioned he essentially snaps and goes crazy and decides to go through with the plan he was forced in to be Terraists anyways. It does seem a little forced, it would have made more sense IMO that he tries to take over after Reinhard dies in an ensuing civil war, but instead they have him fight Reinhard and it doesn't make as much sense. It would have been cool to see Reinhard die or be on his deathbed and when the civil war breaks out Ruenthal decides to plea to the alliance to rebuild it and the imperial unity of the galaxy lasts all of like a year before the Alliance is back and fighting the imperials again, with the Gale Wolf and Ruenthal enemies on other side.

Oh the guy that betrayed the Kaiser. I think I know who you are talking about. I'm not gonna mention any names, but it was the guy the Kaiser sent a message to after kircheis's death. The guy betrayed the Kaiser because he believed the Kaiser wanted someone to fight, an opponent who is strong and smart. The Kaiser did say something along the lines (I'm just summarizing it, not accurate or true to the Kaiser's word), "If you got balls in the future, feel free to fight me". He wanted to fulfill his role for the Kaiser, to act as a scapegoat of sorts.

More than that, he KNEW he was the only person left who could compare to the Kaiser, and believed he had a chance at defeating him, even though the chance was always going to be small.

18:14 The Imperial admirals eventually almost all had unique ships, it's just that they weren't THAT different visually.. BIttenfeld's was just the Fast Battleship but 30-50% longer with an extra engine. Lutz, Farenheit, Mittermeyer and Reuenthal all have unique ships but they're subtly different. The previous supreme admiral had a special flagship that was three of a kind (And it, and the two sister ships eventually all wound up with the rival nobles

i had this series on my computer for five years and i JUST watched and finished it finally over the past 3 weeks. its SO GOOD. you're right about the dialogue being dense. i had to pause a lot to read, too. it was all so well written. the characters felt a lot smarter than me thats for certain. oh and the beautiful soundtrack ofc. they used all of that great classical music so well NO SPOILERS but i dont think an anime has ever broken my heart the way this series (the original) did. i will say no more

So i finished ao. Never watched the og series up intil a week ago, so no nostalgic glasses here. It was weird. Like it had its own things to say and defenitely interesting ideas, but the execution was kinda weak. The plot wasnt even that bad (no masterclass in writing to be sure), however i cannot say i enjoyed it. I think i know why as well. While the characters werent one-note or anything, i never really feel like i got the chance to attach to them. Unlike the OG series which took its time, putting them in day-to-day interactions, here they are just kinda there for the plot. That character interaction was a massive part of what made the original work so well tho. So yeah, i wasnt really invested in the story.

I am really enjoying younger people’s perspective on this show-which is to say, y’all kids whose analogy for understanding war is (arena/moba Gaming). Love that you’re getting stuff out of it. The custom ships (almost overwhelmingly empire characters) -that’s a reflection on the nobility and their stuff is all bespoke. It seems like a stretch to you, coming from a Democratic and more egalitarian society, where mass production makes stuff for everyone because nobody is “better” than others. In the Empire, the leaders are literally regarded as better people. How does bad maintenance happen? Everything happens for a reason. One character’s anger doesn’t control the scene in the OG. instead they explained both. Anyway, the experience of veterans, the actual experience of those who fight at the enlisted level, I agree with you that’s not there in Die Neue These. I think it comes down to broadcasting and ratings. It’s hard to put gore and R ay Pe EE on TV.

But I want some merch! Making the show merch-thirsty in the remake might bring some more people to the well. I don’t mind that there’s two shows, and one of them is a little bit more able to suck teenagers into it.

Technically Hajime didn’t save Kaori from the mugging he save an old lady and her grandson by prostrating himself in front of them and yelling out whatever popped into his head and made the muggers walk away and Kaori was just there and saw the whole thing and was so impressed by his courage that she wanted to be friends which later escalated into romantic feelings

I absolutely agree. This show went from an 8/10 to 5/10 very quickly around the middle of S2, and that's being generous. The nonsensical power scaling (Trevor beating up demons with his bare hands when the same creatures were disembowling trained soldiers a few episodes earlier), increasingly obnoxious main characters, inevitable diversity box-checking, lazy critiques of religion (especially annoying after the excellent dialogue with the bishop in S1e4), embarassing and unearned sex scenes and narrative cul-de-sacs made this a slog to sit through. Some of the monster designs are cool though.
