Weave something specifically for cutting, don't fall in love with the fabric you will use for your first cutting, and then...just do it! Even the cheapest of yarns, once woven, becomes stabilized enough to cut and turn into something else, a pillow case or a small neck roll pillow. I don't know how to make clothes but all my fabrics have taken well to simple projects at my sewing table. Good luck everyone. BE BOLD! Also simple hand towels or wash cloths, cut and hem. It will give you so much confidence!

I wove a log cabin colour and weave on my 16" Ashford SampleIt, with unclear intentions at the start. I just wanted to weave the pattern. I later decided to turn them into quilted placemats, and my friends were like, "No, how can you cut it?! It's too lovely to cut!!!" And cut it I did. I'm so happy I did, and my placemats are lovely. Did I make mistakes? Absolutely! But, I'm the only person that notices, and it reminds me of how I can improve on future projects. Now, I love making tea towels. I got over the anxiety of cutting my handwoven fabric simply by doing it. I think @kellycasanova was a huge help to get over my anxiety of cutting my handwoven fabric, as I've seen her at the serger in previous vids. If she could do it, certainly I could too. Kelly has been such a positive role-model in my weaving journey!

Kelly, you hit the nail on the head with this video. In all ways. The reasons, the fears, the lack of knowledge, tools, or simple skill. I have the tools and the skill, but my weaves are still at the “precious” stage. Almost one year weaving with my rigid heddle. A series on this topic with easy, fun, useful projects would be amazing!❤

When I teach a class I've started bringing a sample to cut and show the students what it looks like when handwoven fabric is cut. I've been known to wave it around like a flag to show that it's not going to fall apart. And I talk about options to reinforce cut edges. It's always a good discussion and I hope it reassures people about cutting handwoven cloth.

Hi Kelly, you are amazing and I think your advice is spot on. I started a business last year making hand woven textiles- kitchen towels at first. I have to throw in a plug for your table weaving class which is excellent and helped give me the confidence to take the leap toward selling my work. Last year I wove 98 kitchen towels to sell- and hurrah- sold all but 11 of them by the end of the year. When I started I was sewing a zigzag stitch on either side of where I was going to cut apart my woven fabric into individual towels. As I’m sure you know, tick tock… time is money so I wanted to speed up the finishing process. So I switched to a straight stitch between places where I would cut the fabric. Then I took a chance and just cut. As I’m sure you know, the earth kept spinning and nothing unraveled- at all. My towels are 8/2 cotton 20 dents per inch, 20 pics per inch woven in a 2/2 twill. Now I sew a double folded over hem on the towels and leave the raw cut edge inside the sewn hem. That has given me the confidence to use my handwoven fabric to make some tote bags and pillows and I plan on doing lots more sewing with fabric I weave. Thanks for being such a great teacher and giving all of us so much encouragement!

Thanks for this video. What I have in mind to do now, is..... Use all my "horrible colours" and just weave plain-weave "cloth". Then practice cutting and sewing with it. I will have the mindset that "this will be thrown away". Thus, no pressure.

I LOVE sewing with my woven fabric. I think for me, the reason I'm comfortable with it is because I started sewing with it almost immediately after beginning my weaving journey, so it just comes natural to me now. Oftentimes the piece I've woven is just random and doesn't really have much potential on its own, but that random piece can become a really cool zipper pouch, or flap for a purse for example.

I never learned to sew. We had home ec in high school, but I wasn't interested. I regret it now. I recently acquired a used sewing machine and managed to get it threaded thanks to a KZbin tutorial. I've sewn hems on my hand woven towels and thats it. I don't know how I missed your sewing videos. I'm going to watch them now.

Everything you are saying is true. I finally cut my fabric after a year. Until then, I felt that I was ruining something so fresh and innocent. Now I am so happy to make something from fabric I created.

Thank you for the pep talk 😍 Yes I am going to commit to weave some fabric and try sewing something simple. My roadblock has always been what kind of fiber to weave to get drape for a garment.

Sarah Howard has a video series about wearing your weaving on KZbin . She has multi-sized patterns for simple garments available (important for easy pattern alterations). With these patterns she tells you how wide to weave your panels for your size to minimize waste and minimize the number of cuts. And gives detailed cutting layouts for these narrow panels. Worth investigating. I believe she makes a lot if her weavings on a rigid heddle loom, too. 💖🌞🌵😷

First of all, I have to say that I love your garden. It looks like a very peaceful place. Also, your scarf is amazing. On to the subject of sewing…sewing is definitely a weak link for me. I want to learn, but I don’t have a sewing machine and frankly I am not very mechanically minded and am intimidated and don’t even know where to start. I’m not really interested in making clothing, but do like making home textiles. I am looking forward to seeing how you cut up your fabric and sew your handwoven fabric into a quilt. A friend of mine has made pillows and bags out of my handwoven fabric. I need to just take the plunge. Unlike previous attempts to learn, there is now KZbin to teach me…

I wish I had more time to weave, but sewing takes over most of my time. I work at a sewing machine dealership in Fort Worth, Texas. I would like to make a vest with m6 woven fabric. I do have an idea for you, Kelly to take the fear out of it for your KZbin audience. Weave some fabric and make a lined zipper bag and record it. There are plenty of videos on making them and replace the other type fabrics with the special woven fabric.

If I had answered the poll, I would have responded, "I'm afraid to cut my fabric!" I have not woven enough to feel comfortable that it won't fray to pieces! I wish I had more time to weave, but I just don't due to work, home responsibilities, etc.

Hello Kelly Thank you for advice about cutting and sewing with our hand woven fabric. I have not made much so far but did practice cutting it and making a little pincushion with a piece of my weaving that went wrong. I was really surprised how stable my fabric was and should really try more experimenting.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am anxious to see with fabric I weave but struggle to select the right yarns to weave first. I live in a VERY warm climate (Arizona, USA) and feel like everything I weave would be too warm to wear.

I live in coastal Virginia so I empathize with you about the fabric weight quandary. That is why I have bought a few skeins and cones of very lightweight linen yarn (both flax and hemp) that are waiting for me to gain enough skill and confidence to use them. By very lightweight I mean 15/1, 60/2 and cobweb.

Hehe. My exact reason for not sewing my handwoven is that I’ve only woven one piece and that I need to weave more. (And that I don’t have any ideas right now for something to weave AND see) I’ve been sewing for a long time before I started weaving. Cutting into commercially woven fabric is just as daunting as cutting into handwoven. There’s just a fear of ruining it. BUT that first cut is the hardest. Once that’s done, it’s all good.

Yep....cutting fabric is scary. I knit and crochet very well. I am quite skilled at weaving and not bad at spinning. I do a little kitchen dyeing, too. Sewing...I can do it, but not usually with the same level of enjoyment or confidence as the other fiber arts. I tend to shrink from it, even though I have sewn for 60+ years.

I love the idea of sewing and have even woven enough that I have a decent length of practice fabric that I wouldn't feel is too precious to risk cutting...but I don't know how to find or create a design for my body shape and I'm a large enough woman that I'm not sure I can make something flattering with my largest woven width. I've made a poncho by weaving in a finished slit, but a real jacket seems beyond me.

A great many weavers don't have looms wide enough to make larger pieces of fabric. I have sewn pieces of fabric together to increase width, and then sewn with it that way.
