To the whipping motion, Matt Halpern is a great example. Looks quite loose when he plays but so smooth.

It is precisely this type of exercise that put me on a path the radically improving my drumming about 10 years ago. I can't recommend this enough. Still a work in progress, the combinations never end. See also: Alan Dawson's Rudimental Ritual.

Was hoping to hear more about his Invisible Touch album with Genesis ...that album was a revolutionary discovery for me as a kid (before MTV videos - just the music:) and was influential for my love and understanding of keyboards in music 😎

As a self taught drummer, I recently realized that limb independence wont come without subdivision fluidity, but subdivision fluidity requires loads of limb independence....😐🤔see, its the rock and a hard place😮💨. I started writing out a drill similar to this but didn't know what would be the best sequence for such a drill, that would achieve said goal. I searched and searched to only find that MOST of these youtube drum "teachers" really only care about there channel and dont really teach... u know, the vitals, what we're actually needing. Thank you so much for this ACTUAL lesson, and especially, the confirmation of what i knew i needed to work on but wasn't sure the best route. Thank you again for ACTUALLY caring about us blind drummers and TRULY teaching a REAL drum lesson! Without first asking me to hit subscribe at that, or even mentioning it all for that matter 😅 👍🏽

I didn't realize until now, that it was one single drumfill, that killed rock music. Since the 80ies music became flat and boring. The grunge guys could do something, but beside that ... 🤨😁

This is a better explanation than most, but still unnecessarily confusing because...you're not actually practicing what you 'at first' preach. Your video demonstrates over and over again that your wrist is nowhere close to being still, as your explanation 'seems' to stipulate, because you 'are' using it to begin each pattern when it is necessarily the case that the stick tip has no momentum yet of its own. Even at speed the wrist is describing an up and down oscillation or sine wave pattern, which creates the flow that allows for the wrist to be relaxed at speed. Eventually you correctly alter your explanation by saying instead that the wrist 'drops', but never goes up, which is only half correct: the wrist never goes up during a 'even' course of notes, but it necessarily does to start a pattern or accent a note in a longer series of notes. At speed, the movement involved is reduced to insignificance that amounts to a felt or perceived, rather than seen, finger twitch that is so fast that it must become autonomic (happens automatically) rather than intended. Great channel!

You’re correct, the steps to get this correctly at slow speeds is different than at regular playing speeds. Still the way I demonstrate the slow speeds here are *exactly* how to get strokes consistently strong and the mechanics in place to then adjust and play the higher speeds, with the “sine wave” relaxation and flow as I teach in depth with my students, and yes there are thousands of exceptions and nuances that need to happen depending on musical context and what you intend to execute!

Excellent and well communicated grip tips! I practice a lot on my drum set, but perform most often these days on orchestral timpani. While always going for that relaxation/tension balance, I never want to drop a timpani mallet....no place to hide in that circumstance. BTW, another excellent resource to study are Rick Dior's videos on grip and stroke. He studied with Joe Morello, and it shows.

This is awesome, and makes perfect sense. What are your thoughts on spring tension? My style is to play with a lot of feel and dynamics, for which a low perceived pedal resistance is said to be best, but also is said to hamper speed.
@DimitriFantini2 күн бұрын
I use high spring tension, never had any issue with dynamics or feel!
@ballhawk3872 күн бұрын
@@DimitriFantini Interesting, and I appreciate the quick reply. I've always found playing with a very tight pedal to be like handling a live snake. Seems to bounce around on its own accord, very hard to control the timing while varying the dynamics. But then, your idea of high spring tension might not be the same as mine. My current setting is at about a 45 degree angle, and if pulled back, bounces back and forth a few times before coming to rest. So it definitely has some spring tension, but is not difficult to push in by hand. Whereas the bass drum pedal at the practice space my band uses, which I swap out, has a spring tension so high one can barely move it with one's wrist. I mean really, really high, such that I would have to use my whole leg to stomp on it to play it..

Studio issues. They were recording at the same studio Peter Gabriel was creating some solo stuff. Then, you got: 1 - a drumset with no cymbals and high-hats, (as Peter Gabriel's requested); 2 - a talkback mic (voice) that was wrongly set up for the drum's toms. The high-compressed system boosted the drum sound, and the final result was way heavier than expected. 😮

When I was 13/14 years old I was a huge fan of Phil Collins, having all his solo albums and quite a few Genesis ones. Today it makes me sad to see Phil looking so old and frail, no longer able to play the drums. But he's 73 years old and had an amazing run, leaving us with oodles of amazing songs.

16:45 It's almost a crying shame that apparently some folks think that Phil Collins was just "In The Air Tonight," the Tarzan soundtrack and maybe "Another Day In Paradise" or his cover of "You Can't Hurry Love" because they forget, some of his best and most radio and retail played hits were from No Jacket Required. Personal favoeites like "Susudio" and "Take Me Home" came from that one. And who could forget the emotional Hello I Must Be Going album? Or the criminally underrated and underselling Dance Into The Light album? (Which washed away the stench of the rather bleak Both Sides album) Or what about that collaboration with Bone Thugs N Harmony "Home" that used to play on BET?
