Saw FF in Minneapolis on Sunday. First half was loud and fast. Before the mid point and band introductions, Dave was looking at Josh (like in these video clips) and extending the song and solo. Josh wailed and when the song was over, he was gassed, slumping into the stool. It was hot, he was all in and did not miss a beat. Legend

Freese's level of skill and sophistication is frankly > almost everyone he plays with. To see this level of chops and depth of knowledge at a Foo Fighters concert is unheard of. It's exciting to see such a monster drummer who's encouraged to shine with a band this big, and comparable to the huge audience that Peart had with Rush, and a gift to watch, especially if you're a drummer. Freese is one of the guys I look to when figuring out what can be played live that won't get lost in subtlety (as you mentioned)... like when a drummer is playing more ghost notes that no one hears than they do phrases and accents that are unmistakable. I applaud and appreciate Dave Grohl for two things when it comes to Freese: 1) having the clout to pull a drummer of his caliber into the Foo Fighters, and 2) having the knowledge and appreciation to know what a huge addition Freese would be to the band.

Watching the live performances on the late night shows (specifically Conan O'Brien if I remember correctly), his playing is effortless and fluid. Freese is a beast. He will be an amazing addition to the band. That being said, there's a kid named Tosh Peterson who's been playing for performers (wasting his talent IMHO) like Lil Nas X. Young Thug and Bad Bunny. The kid is Hawkins 2.0. He's also done work with bands like Filter and Fall out Boy and would fit in Taylor's throne perfectly. If you don't know who he is, look up the Drumeo thing he did where he had to learn a Deep Purple song as fast as possible without hearing the drums in the song. By the first 8 count he plays after hearing it once, you will understand why I'm so hyped on this kid.
