I noticed utility poles beside the grade. Then I notice that there were communications... or power lines... on them. Is this an an access road for the local Ojibwae community?

The grade isn't an access per se, but people use it. There is a road to the north that accesses the First Nation reserve, but the utility poles follow the rail grade. maps.app.goo.gl/8CDf53C8eGCCaP5y6

It looks like the exposed rock at TS 11:50 was unblasted and just the lower portions were, where it interfered with the track alignment. If you really want to know definitely you're going to have to use the trusty Droan. Might have made some very nice video too of the lake/ bay.

So did you see the below the fold headline on The Star the other day about that trail? In order to connect a portion of it across a RoW (honestly I can't remember which one) it's going to cost 150 million. My city is broke. I can hardly believe this was even being debated. I do cycle but not over that way. Oh and by the way, if you come over to Leaside (almost my neighbourhood), there is a Longo's Supermarket in the former Canadian Northern locomotive backshop. There's a plaque close to the door. The only reminent left of their facilities. It would have been neat if they had left the travelling crane.
@padwrr
@padwrr 2 ай бұрын
@@foamer443 I have not seen the article, but my brother was telling me about it. I believe it’s crossing Dundas where the connection point is. I’m torn with these situations. That is a lot of money and there are many other pressing needs, but at the same time once the RoW is lost, it is lost forever. It’s too bad everything is so expensive. Not sure if I’ll make it over that way. We have a tour with author Ron Brown on Saturday who will be taking us to a few locations associated with the rail history of the area. Not sure if you’ve read any of his books.

Enjoyed this videos of travel on the old Kinghorn and Graham Subdivisions of CN. I agree that the Orient Bay section of the Kinghorn has spectacular scenery, especially in the Fall and Spring. Do you know if one can cycle end-to-end on the Kinghorn and Graham Subdivisions? Specifically are the bridges still in place over the rivers and streams?
@padwrr
@padwrr 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, I'm glad you are enjoying them. Lots more on the way. I do my explorations in sections, but theoretically you could bike the entire Kinghorn from end to end with one exception. There were a few washouts west of Geraldton that have since been repaired and the bridges are all passable for now. The only issue (barring any future washouts) is the Blende River Viaduct just east of Thunder Bay. It has been fenced off on either end, and while people have cut holes in the fence, I doubt you'd be able to get a bike through the opening. The Graham Sub is mostly okay to cycle. I've only started exploring this line, so I can't tell you all of the issues that may exist. West of Flett there are some nasty puddles that could be problematic for a biker. There is a major washout just north of Quorn Station over the English River that has effectively severed the line. I haven't got that far in my scouting, but I believe there is a detour around the washout that could be travelled by bike. From looking at satellite photos I think there are a few other spots near Watcomb that could might be an impediment. I wish I had more detail for you. I might more more answers by next summer.

@@DougPeabody Thanks, glad you like it. There are a few issues, but I find staying in frame isn’t really one of them. The current mount for that camera is a Go Pro gooseneck, which I find is too wobbly and it squeaks like crazy. I need to get a more secure mount, but that’s down on the priority list. Backlighting can be an issue at times as well. I find that the editing can be a chore as well with the size of the files and trying to sync the audio.

As DP stated about 'back in the day'. On that I recall a story related by Bill Coos, who was a CN/Via conductor who wrote a couple of books. He had a passenger, an Englishman say (to the effect) "All these trees are bloody frustrating and should be cut down. They keep blocking the view!" I think if that fellow had seen this video maybe this might have changed his mind. And I so wished a train would have hove into view, even a stack would have been ok. Would have been the perfect video for Dominion Day, showing the majesty of N.O.
@padwrr

Things would have probably been different 20 years ago when the trains were still running. It's amazing how fast the vegetation grows in. I did mess up on the video a bit as I forgot what altitude and camera angle I used when I shot the second piece. I have to make a mental note to remember these things so the video looks more uniform and angle is a bit wider.
