Savage in the 1950s figured out how to build an accurate hunting rifle that a working man could afford. Gun writers spilled much ink about how ugly the "nut" was. The gun scribes like many shooters hate change even if it's a good thing. Time is money, Savage engineers understood this fact long before CNC machines came about. The 110 design was a study in efficient rifle production. There is a place in the rifle market for custom built rifles, Griffin & Howe will gladly build you "1" All American 300 Win Mag "without a barrel nut" for $21,720 plus tax. Savage will sale you "34", 110 Apex Hunter 300 Win Mag and throw in a Vortex 3-9X40 scope. Of course, you have to willing to overlook the barrel nut.

No threaded barrel for tuner or brake? Are there any videos that you know of where the owner is shooting this build? Would be interesting to know how it does.
@AccurateRiflesandRestorations2 күн бұрын
no. those things only cause issues. No, the owner is private and has not shared, only winning matches is all I can report. It is as good as it gets. The shooter is now responsible for developing a load and being steady.

Ive read and watched videos of people saying the firing pin hole on howas is oversized. As such they will solder a bushing i to the end and reestablish the firing pin hole/ bolt face diameter/depth. Do you find there is any validity to that or real issues with the sloppy tolerance? Great video. Very informative!

They are somewhere in the .072-.078 range from what I remember. While I offer this service, I don't find it necessary unless the customer is really loading hot and is piercing primers. If they're a "hot-rodder" than we'll just do it, if not we just roll with it as is.

So, I'm a big Savage Arms fan, and let me tell you why. I'm a lefty shooter, and Savage supplies us lefties with the largest number of left handed bolt action options in North America. PERIOD. Their barrel nut system is awesome because it allows those of us, who choose to do the simple work ourselves, to not have to seek out an overpriced so-called "gunsmith" to do that work for us, make us wait 2 to 3 weeks or longer, and charge half the price of a new rifle to set head space on a new barrel. Ridiculous, and I wouldn't give you a plug nickel for the quality of "gunsmithing" work that 90% of the so-called gunsmiths do in my area of the country....the midwest. Just like this video, they want to shame you into thinking their the only ones who can properly headspace a barrel swap or true up an action. Once you get past the entry level 110 offerings from Savage, and move up to the Timberline, the Ultralite, or the Elite Precision lines, you get a completely accurized and blue printed barrel with a very flat and registering proper lug. Barrel swaps and headspace setting with a go no/go gauge are as easy as a 5 to 10 minute job if you take the time to have a coffee break in the middle. Why would anybody want to pay $175 for that service?????? I've watched a couple of your video's, and this will be the last. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with the barrel nut system of a rifle. All of my Savage rifles (I own 6) shot sub MOA out of the box, and my current 6.5 cm, which started out as a Timberline model is currently consistently shooting around 1/4 MOA when I compete in local PRS stuff for fun. I see guys at the range with their fancy $3500 plus rigs that are having all sorts of problems. If you want your channel to grow beyond sub 2000 subscribers, you'd better lose the attitude. You've certainly lost this viewer.

@AccurateRiflesandRestorations9 күн бұрын
While that is a valid observation and comment please understand that 6.8 Western Factory ammo (any factory ammo for that matter) seldom shoots very well. The other piece of ultimate consistent accuracy comes from the shooter and the load specifically tailored to his/her rifle. Handloaders can get the thing to shoot amazingly with the right load and components. Wish I could have shown that, but alas I have to get the work done and delivered for our customers. At least I'm honest, I could have just as easily lied and shown some fake results, right? 🙃 Thanks for watching and for engaging the channel!

@AccurateRiflesandRestorations Is there a way to convert it to a safe, and similar pressure, long boat-tail bullet that would be more accurate than 6.8 Western? Perhaps some other round between 6 - 7 mm?

How much does a 99 have to be shot to wear the OE barrel out?
@AccurateRiflesandRestorations9 күн бұрын
Barrels of this era were not made with as high quality of alloys as modern barrels, plus some of the ammo shot through it could have been corrosive, possibly. Maybe not a 243 WIN, but the 308/7.62 stuff definitely. 2-3K I would say would be about it.

Insane that you just posted! I ordered a 6.8 Western 22" barrel with 7.5 twist from CarbonSix back on 14 March and it just shipped today (9 Dec). Looking forward to seeing how it shoots with various factory loads. They're turnaround was slow, but as soon as I hit the 8 month mark I reached out and their customer service were very communicative about progress. CarbonSix has a few reviews at this point that are very positive and a couple that have focused solely on lead time disappointments. UltimateReloader has done a few builds with them and I ordered based on his review of the finished product.
