Hey man, great video. I normally use Fusion 360. But it's just so expensive, I've just recently cancelled my subscription. It hasn't been a week and I'm already missing it. Luckily for me I stumbled upon your channel. I'm going to give Onshape a try, looks like it worked for you fairly well. You aren't alone with the self-doubt. I am absolutely convinced that the model I'm scratch building is trash and I'm wasting glue and good usable parts. But once you get that coat of primer on it. Everything usually blends together and look great. But getting there is definitely the challenge. I was getting ready to do a scratchbuild to challenge myself to complete it by the end of the month. I'm also going to check out Sublight Drive. So, thanks for all the inspiration.

I've done huge lighted models over the years. running strips of copper tape through the interior reduces the wiring mess. You solder the led's to the tape one end and power at the other. many bulbs can solder onto a length of tape. think slot car track pattern for the tape.

Another aspect I noticed is that you can save even more space (and reduce visual overload) by storing / "archiving" suplus equipment. As an example, I imagine you can have one box cutter of every colour, and you can store the rest away from the bench. As for myself I have two different cutters, which I rotate according to their degree of wear and "unsharpness", when both are unsharp one gets its blade snapped off and the other remains somewhat unsharp to do the heavy / destructive jobs). Generally speaking, making an inventory is extremely useful, this was to perfect opportunity to do one :)
@DarlingbroughSciFiBuilds
@DarlingbroughSciFiBuilds Ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! I have still got a LOT of stuff to sort out - I have shelves full of random bits and bobs / greeblies and materials to go through and sort out, so this is a good time as you say to start working on what I have and where to store it! :)

Hey it looks gorgeous mate ! The shot with the lights on is superb. The cost is also quite reasonable, well done. Most elements are reuseable anyway, so in a way it is a dureable investment. The gap at the end of the bench caught my attention immediately, beaue this is where all those tiny bits disappear. You know, the tiny bits which fly away when you snap them off the sprue in a wrong way. Shameless advert: when this happens on a Toothpick Miniature design, you just make another one ! :) For this gap I would recommend some sort of fabric, in a U-shape with enough leeway to pull it out to retrieve anything that it caught. Also ideally it would be in an uniform colour (to identify those bits more easily)/ Some plastic parts are black, others are grey, so I imagine a fabric in red, green or light purple for instance.
@DarlingbroughSciFiBuilds
@DarlingbroughSciFiBuilds Ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment! I presume you are referring to the gap under the pegboards? I have a plan for that - I will be getting some brush strips which I will be adding at a later date (when I have some money spare of course!)... This way it'll stop any loose items flying off the back of the bench, but will also allow cables to be tucked behind the desk for when I put a computer on it to do some computer work... I can also connect a hose to a spray booth for painting models too!

The project is very realistic as in: obstacles started accumulating and premises shifted, but it the end it worked out fine ;) This noisy neighbour is a blessing, the situation allows you to stretch hours work hours (which is one of the truly finite ressources). Will this bench be used for filming, and if so, how have you planned to install the lighting equipment? (BTW I came across a good practical idea: a computer screen makes for a good diffuse light/softbox, and as a bonus you can change the colour!) 15:29 The shape in the background looks a bit like a diorama of a derelict ship sitting on the floor of the ocean. A project well done! At 1:33 these belts could possibly make great tracks for tracked vehicles. 08:30 I'm still very intrigued by the scale you finally chose for this ETATV, as you explained in the video before this one. 08:50 The frames for the window and airlock have very interesting shapes and details, I wonder how metallic they will look when painted. The illusion of depth if perfect (but if there is real depth, it's not an illusion anymore, more of an impression, no?) (I used to be a teacher, forgive me ^^) 09:10 Yes the models looks terrific, the modular design means you can also design other modules for this platform, for instance a crane / recovery attachement instead of the cockpit / "people transport" module. Some modules could function one detached from the vehicle (I'm thinking about the "Heuschrecke 10" WW2 self-propelled artillery that could function as a standalone turret as well.) Anyway, you now have a dimensional standard for this vehicle, it may haunt you later when you'll try to design another pod that J U S T doesn't fit the standard (usually by mere millimeters ^^) Cool project Darlingbrough 👍

Wow! Certainly some points to respond to! So here goes... *inhales deeply* 08:30 - Ahhh yes... I never DID confirm the exact scale, did I? That is because I am planning on an experiment which I have not had the chance to implement yet... (Clue - it involves some 3D printing...)... All will be revealed in an upcoming video! ;) 08:50 - Haha Sorry Sir! ;) Dude! I make models from sticks! I'm "creative and imaginative", not a words worth!! If anything, I would say my intelligence for Language is subordinate... However, if you wish to be pedantic and postulate the semantics, I will confirm you appear to be correct - the "illusion" of depth would be a deceptive way of creating the depth, and the "impression" of depth would be the conceptualisation of depth... Obviously completely different! (But then again I no speak English good, and don't know long words...) :D 09:10 - I had already considered something similar... The "cab" of the vehicle will be pretty much fixed, however the rear of the vehicle (the "trailer") will be modular... STOP SPOILING MY SURPRISES!!! Thanks for the feedback! Love the suggestions and ideas (pedantic semantics again??) ;), and thanks for the support!

05:44 I didn't know about Randall Cooper, he's truly next level! 🤩 07:30 Well as far as I am concerned, I make models of historical vehicles to demonstrate how close my method can get you to a commercial miniature model. In this approach I start with the original model, which makes things easy for me since most measurements and design decisions have already been made. As a secundary source I also look on commercial models to see what they decided they could get away with ^^ My reference point are not the 1:35 super-accurate Tamiya models, but rather the more mundane and affordable "Matchbox" models in 1:76 I used to build as a child. The point is that it is to be used to play with (as a miniature or in wargames) rather than being displayed. That said, I have ideas of vehicles and objects that don't really exist yet, but if I make models of them it would fit into a larger framework. I made 3D pictures of spaceships and a lot of other things when I made my TTRPG universe "Solsys - l'Encyclopédie du Système Solaire" (check the link at the bottom of the Toothpick Miniatures webpage), and illustrators collaborated to the project as well.

05:44 - Yes, I am AMAZED by his work! Having looked into his bio, history and accomplishments he has worked on some amazing films, shows and his work really is awesome! I am currently binge watching his videos and trying to learn as much as I can from him! 07:30 I have seen a few of your videos and you have a very solid approach to your construction! I always find it difficult to recreate something that already exists (probably why I design my own work!), so I admire trying to recreate existing vehicles and objects! The issue I have with the matchbox / Hot wheels "toys" is that they are not built to a specific scale... I understand they are usually "about 1:76 / 1:87 (I think), however I suspect that they take some "artistic license" when making a toy based on a real vehicle... As a toy, I agree they are awesome (I actually got a Hot wheels "Batmobile (the animated series version) from my 5 year old son for Christmas, and I also bought a couple of Hot wheels "1984 Pontiac Trans Am Firebirds" with a future project in mind... (10 points if you can guess what I am planning)... ;) but as an accurate "replica" they simply do not stand up to scrutiny that other models (such as the Tamiya models you mentioned)... Not that I am a "rivet counting scrutineer" by any means! Haha ;)

@@DarlingbroughSciFiBuilds Actually I was talking about the 1:76 Matchbox plastic models to build, like the Wespe self-propelled artillery for instance, or the Humber Mk II. They were quite affordable and easily found in supermarkets.

@@DarlingbroughSciFiBuilds 07:30 Thank you! Actually I started the Toothpick Miniatures project with a lot of original designs in mind, but the most important to promote the method in itself. Replicas of exisiting vehicles are meant to be compared to other methods, with the hope that some people will realise they are valid alternatives to commercial models. When I explain the method, people compare it to the toys that children make out of tin cans in the developing world. There is something to this comparison, but doing things from freely available materials doesn't automatically translate into "trash scavenging" ☣ Although I subscribed to a real trash scavenger's channel ^^ ("Mike the Scavenger")

@@ToothpickMiniatures-wl7gf Aaaaahhhh, Sorry, when you mentioned the "Matchbox" vehicles, my mind instantly thought of the toy cars! But now you clarified that, I know from my model railway (OO gauge = 1:76) what you mean! 🚂🚃🚃🚃😉

04:58 Yes overengineering is part of the creative process, but it's good because it's in a flow of ideas. The mental state in which we create and overengineer is not the state of mind when we trim the excess or streamline the design, but both are necessary to go forwards. I mean, with your modular design, you can always make another part (whereas I often resort to make another prototype altogether, and keep the old prototypes for reference, like in my jeep video) 05:04 Yes it looks complicated but in real life chassis and vehicle bodies are also complex shapes. i find it helpful to build the model like the real-life equivalent is built, sometimes there is some hidden cleverness in the way objects and vehicle were designed.

04:58 - I agree! I did a LOT of the work off camera as I didn't want to film "here's me adding ANOTHER stick the the frame", and I enjoyed the freedom of just building it... :) 05:04 - This is very true! Strip away the panels from a normal vehicle and there is a huge amount of support and strengthening bars underneath... Obviously they are all hidden with the exterior to make the final product look aesthetically pleasing, and that is the same as I will be doing... The question is - should I continue working on the external aspects of the cab / the internal cockpit, or should I build a frame for the trailer first?

Haha You are perfectly welcome! I always try and include my viewers as much as possible, and respond to feedback... I KZbin as more of a "community" than just a way of broadcasting my videos to viewers, so am always really happy to receive feedback! 🤗🤗 04:06 - Yep! As an "80's child" (Born in 1981) I grew up with "properly built" cars - solid frames / bumpers etc, and I feel that a lot of Sci - Fi still reflects that... Each to their own, I have NO issues with other designs or aesthetics within Sci-Fi, but perhaps this is a topic for a future video! ;)
