I know this is an old video but do you think you could make a material list? Me and my friend really want to build this in survival
@shells1247 күн бұрын
Oh, um. I actually made this tutorial with the intention that it could be constructed at any size and with any materials. Partially so I could avoid having to make a materials list, but also because I didn't want to put a limiter on your creativity and dictate what blocks and size you could or could not build build with. Most of the blocks I chose here were to provide contrast so it would be easy to see what I was doing and I used polished andesite so you could count the blocks as I built with them. All this to say that I'm going to be lazy and not give you a materials list. Sorry. If it helps, here's my basic materials plan: Choose a block type for your pillars and ribs. Then choose a block for your filler for the vault. They do not have to be different blocks, but it helps. Gather a crap ton of both. Happy building!

Thanks. This sort of layout planning is probably what I was looking for. I need to make a dome and that’s just a matter of circles within circles. Also, there’s probably some relationship between the green and blue block counts that correspond to a good circular curve.

Amazing. Im a good chunk of the way through building my cathedral thanks to your videos. I've got myself confused with my flying buttreses at the corners of the trancepts though so need to sort that... I improved my spire but now my belltowers look a bit paltry in comparison 😅. I had a question though! Ive done the thick windows with the fogging on my ground floor around the aisles and you had mentioned in the other videos about lining them up on the outside to fit them around the aisles around the crossing but for the life of me i can't figure out how you did that! Anyway thanks so much your videos are excellent 👍🏻
@shells124Ай бұрын
@@Itofuentes yeah, I'll admit that getting the crossing right is tough. I think in my forest cathedral tour I admitted that I had to use some fake windows around the crossing (where there are windows on the inside but not on the outside) because I was having the issue where they were running into each other. That is one of the biggest drawbacks I've found to using the fog windows is the crossing gets messy and you kind of have to make stuff up. I wish I had a better answer for you, but that's unfortunately how it is.
@ItofuentesАй бұрын
@@shells124 Thanks! I'm getting there - kind of regretting putting the whole thing together before fixing these things ! But its coming together! I'll check out the forest cathedral tour and take a closer look. I think part of my issue is that I made the walls on the floor above my fog windows too thin - which is giving me "Roof Issues" around the crossing. However it has resulted in a nice kind of halo of roof around my lantern that I actually kind of like. I also managed to do a circle of the black glass bricks you recommended with the copper trap doors and it works great with daylight in the lantern. Thanks for the tips - v much appreciated !

How do you fit the archivolts for the bell towers? For the main entrance the left over space from using a squash vault is used for the archivolt, but how does it work for the bell towers?
@shells1242 ай бұрын
Some of it comes from adding thickness to your walls. A lot of cathedrals had very thick walls, so I don't see why you can't do the same in Minecraft. If you create a bit of a gap between the inner room and the exterior, you could fit the archivolt in that gap.

I've been planning to recreate the Ely Cathedral in Minecraft for some time, mostly because of Leonard Bernstein's performance of Mahler's 2nd symphony there (definitely watch if you haven't seen it). I was looking at the octagon and thought that it was impossible to build in Minecraft, or at the very least I would have to simplify the octagon. But here you are building it! Amazing video series, I've watched every minute of it and it's been hugely inspiring for me.

This is glorious. It's so beautiful. It's like a Wood Elf Cathedral with all the wood and nature. I can't believe you've done something this mind blowing. You're amazing.
@shells1242 ай бұрын
@@littlerobotfairy9710 thank you! Wood elf cathedral is a great way to put it! I love fantasy and try to incorporate some sort of fantastical element into all of my builds! While this may be intimidating, I find that breaking builds down into basic shapes helps make it less intimidating. You also don't have to build something quite this ginormous. Give it a go and you may surprise yourself! I think getting the interior vaults down and the apse and ambulatory are the trickiest parts. Best of luck with your cathedral! ( Eventho i would love to be able to build like what you showcased here more) But ive always struggled alot with things like domes etc and circular/ curved thingd
@shells1243 ай бұрын
@@diagonstudios15 that's fair. I personally struggle with organic, freeform builds and tend to stick with symmetrical designs and geometric shapes. Even my swirls are based off the Golden Ratio Fibonacci spiral. So I always worry that my builds tend to come out a bit stoic. I think the best way is to practice with things outside your comfort zone until you start to become more comfortable with it. Easier said than done, I know. But that was part of why I made this particular build more swirly in the hopes of expanding my abilities.
@diagonstudios153 ай бұрын
@@shells124 i relatr heavily. Id say i show you some of my builds but unfortunately i cant add images :( , but very similar problem always sticking to symmetry and i feel like its like a borderline autistic thing with me and symmetry and starting to actually lose my mind over possible asymmetry. But its like you said, it makes builds way more stoic and boring( idk if boring is the correct word) Thats why the free form is definitely nicer. Important note tho i build everything block by block i do not use any form of world edit or such ( im not sure if you do ? Only just discovered your videos today. But big ups to you if you did this build block by block cause its insanely massive)
