Try making about 100 coils at once. The take the spring looking coil to a vice place the coils in a piece of soft leather or even rubber shelf liner and just a jewelers saw to cut a straight line down the center. No worries over beveled edge vs a flush edge. They will all be perfect!

Do you use a drill to make the well for the stone?
@rurusrings7 күн бұрын
I use a hand vise and drill bits/ball burs and work my way up in sizes until the stone fits. It’s a long and annoying process but until I can afford a flex shaft that’s all I can do. The rotary tool I have runs at one speed and it is too fast to use my drills bits. They legit run flat and lose the blade anytime I’ve tried so I just take my sweet time hand drilling my settings. It is good though as it allows full control over the process so I don’t take away too much metal. I have a full length video coming out either Sunday or Monday that will be going over flush setting where I go through that process. I have a video posted of flush setting a diamond that I go over how I do it as well!! Thanks for the question :)

I’d love to see how you made the actual setting. I have been looking for a video showing that and can’t find one!
@rurusrings24 күн бұрын
I was actually going to film the process, but it was the first time making a bezel for a faceted stone / marquise setting so I knew I’d get way too stressed out trying to film it and just wanted to fully focus on making the setting. I plan to make another faceted bezel setting soon and will probably film that process now that I know what I’m doing. It might not be for a marquise but I will definitely share soon!! For this specific one, I laid out two layers of the same gauge sheet metal one longer than the other. I soldered those together to make a stepped sheet metal. If you look up stepped bezel wire or sheet metal you’ll understand what I mean. then cut to make two identical in length and started to form it like a semi circle. I checked against the stone during this process to make sure the curvature matched that of the stones. Once I got to a good curvature I started to file down the edges until they sat flush together. At this point it looked like this ( ) I continued to file it down until when sitting together they fit the length and width of the stone. I then soldered them together and bam. I hope this helped some at least until I make a video!! Thank you for watching!!🥰🫶

Oh my goodness I was definitely very frustrated setting this stone!! Thank you so much for watching and I hope it encourages you to try again!! At least when you fail, you learn what you can do differently the next time. I appreciate your kind words and hope this video gets you motivated try again! I’d probably say for next time some advice for this specific stone shape setting / faceted stone is to make sure there’s a good seat for your stone to sit in, that it’s even on both sides and your stone sits flush with the metal when inside. If it has a sharp point like princess cut, marquise, pear etc. use a tiny ball bur on the inside of the setting where those points would sit to allow enough space when setting. It keeps it from chipping the stone(I learned after chipping the first stone) and take your time!! Never rush stone setting as one wrong move can ruin your piece. I usually do this and screw up because it takes forever and I’m just ready to wear my jewelry lol! It’s worth the wait though. Thanks again🥰🫶

Hello I have just started watching your KZbin videos you are very good at making your jewelry i live in uk i would like to know where you get your wire from and what gauge you use for rings and necklaces and where do you get your sheets of sterling silver please i am 64 and just started to make handmade jewelry i would like to have my own website but do not have the money for one thank you
@rurusringsАй бұрын
Thank you so very much!! I really appreciate that and am so glad you enjoy my videos!! I get a lot of my metal materials from Rio Grande. It truly depends on what type of ring you’re making but I usually use a range of 16-12 gauge sterling silver wire as I have mainly focused on more simple pieces as I’ve started out. Truly depends on what look you’re going for and how chunky you want your band to be. I get my sheet metal from them as well. I accidentally bought too thick of sheet metal my first go around but am working with it anyways because I don’t want it to go to waste lol. There’s ways you can work around buying too thick of metal so don’t worry too much about it. I can always make a video if you need over more details of items or any other questions you have if you’d like. That’s amazing and so exciting you’re starting your jewelry making journey!! It’s such a fun craft and I fall more in love with it each day. I started metalsmithing only six months ago and I’ve gotten further than I imagined in this amount of time. It’s all about determination!! Also I completely understand waiting to have a website, it took me a while before I committed to getting mine because of money. Honestly starting on Etsy or a marketplace as such would be a great place to start selling as long as you factor it into your pricing. I believe Shopify has a 5$ a month website option but it’s bare minimum. If anything you could sell off of instagram if you market yourself right too. I’m still working on marketing myself and getting consistent in sales, it can be a tedious process but worth it in the end. Let me know where I can check out your stuff I’d love to support!! Thanks again so much🥰God bless you

I founded this video today. I never work in gold because is to expensive and I just started with silversmith hobbyist. Question: how long did you take to work in gold? Did you practiced in silver before to be confident? What are the differences between silver and gold? Thanks 😊
@rurusringsАй бұрын
Hi there!! So glad you watched my video!! So yes it is very expensive especially right now. It just keeps going up and up! I saved up for a while a good portion to make at least two items as you see in the video that I know would test the process of creating with gold. I’ve been working with silver for 6 months now and I definitely waited a while for gold mainly to save up with it and get used to using silver. It’s basically the same process as using silver except the melting point is different. Gold feels like butter vs silver being a little more stiff in my opinion. I definitely waited til I was confident using silver but it didn’t take long. I mainly waited so long just to save up enough money for it with out breaking the bank lol. 🫶🥰I hope this all helps!!

Why didn’t you buy gold grain?
@rurusrings2 ай бұрын
The process I use to make the items I am currently offering don’t require gold grain. I could probably use it for these specific items but grain comes in different granules which would make it a little too inconsistent. I have a specific sized wire in a specific amount and it comes out to be the exact size each time. Once I can get the equipment to cast I will definitely get grain though.

Hi! Great video! This is just meant as constructive criticism, with LOVE. It is pronounced: MOhs with a long "O". A roughed out cabochon is called a "rub", just as it's spelled, and as referring to cut gemstones, it's called a "fasset,(facet), there is no 'au' sound. I enjoyed listening and watching your video. I think I have more to learn about cutting cabochons and faceted gems!

To save money buy your sandpaper at harbor freight. And cut them in half. It’s also better sandpaper. Water resistant Aluminum oxide. Especially in the higher number grit. They are separated I believe they have 5 sheets per grit. Harbor Freight is cheap cheap cheap. I even buy my rotary tool bits that are diamond grit. Downside to them is they are a lower number grit (rough) You can start out with a Vevor cabbing machine. Much cheaper then Pacific diamond, Cab king and so on. Then move up to the more expensive machines. I started with sandpaper but having rheumatoid arthritis it caused me much pain. Interested and finishing the video. Silicosis is what happens to our lungs when breathing in rock dust high in silica. Also asbestos, strict nine and other heavy metals is not good to breathe to all that do not know that is watching this video in that and that is why she is saying to wear a mask. Water does help control the dust. I get teased cause I use water and mask. In my opinion you could breath in the toxin’s with the water spray with the rock dust. I washed the stone between sanding grits as to not cross contaminate Anyhow can’t wait finish watching. So far so good.

@rurusrings2 ай бұрын
One of my gemstone dealers randomly had a one time deal on instagram for them. He doesn’t do them anymore but I’ve seen on Etsy where you can find kits like that with great options all the time!! Look up “lapidary beginner kits or hand polishing gemstone kit” on Etsy or even on safari. I recommend starting with Ethiopian opals as they’re cheaper. If not you can look up everything I mentioned in the video needed separately, and search “gemstone rough” or “gemstone rub” on Etsy or safari and you’ll find tons of options
