Visited many years ago. Great experience. My grandfather helped build Albacore. Btw Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is technically in Kittery, Maine.

You got me with the "where many a cub scout has spent an overnight trip" I very distinctly remember my troops overnight on the USS Massachusetts and I have been eager to get back ever since!

Other than the cool decor, nothing else really special about the restaurant, the food is mediocre.

Great vid. My Dad served on her for 5 years. He's 82 now. He slips a bit at his age, but ask him any question about his boat, he is sharp as a tack. The Albacore was a guinea pig. She tested new knowledge and science. Then she was sent to sea trying to sink herself, she was experimental. Big balls with the crew. Go to sea and try to sink yourselves so we can gather data.

I grew up in Somerset, right across the river from Battleship Cove, where the Big Mamie is docked. When I was a kid, back in the 70s, it was the only ship there. It was cool watching them add one ship after the other. Anyway, my brothers and I knew the ship so well, that our mom used to drop us off at the ship while she did some errands in Fall River (the city where Battleship Cove is). We ran all over that ship, along with other kids, and it was just awesome. I shot down a whole bunch of planes, in my little kid's fantasies, with the deck guns that back then actually moved with the little wheels. I'm smiling ear to ear just remembering my love of the Big Mamie.

"The world's largest collection of World War II naval vessels!" Nope.... you have 2 ships that served in WWII, USS Massachusetts and USS Lionfish. All of the others are post WWII service ships. The Battleship Memorial Park in Alabama also has two genuine WWII ships. USS Alabama and USS Drum. The Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park also has 2 genuine WWII ships, USS Little Rock and USS The Sullivans. Patriots Point South Carolina also has 2 genuine WWII ships, USS Yorktown and USS Laffey. So not the largest and not unique either.

Bensons was the field trip place from where I grew up. When I was in 7th grade, me and a friend were making gorilla noises at the gorilla. He/she picked up a piece of poo and threw it at us! Luckily there was plexi glass. All in all it was a beautiful place.
