I grew up in Somerset, right across the river from Battleship Cove, where the Big Mamie is docked. When I was a kid, back in the 70s, it was the only ship there. It was cool watching them add one ship after the other. Anyway, my brothers and I knew the ship so well, that our mom used to drop us off at the ship while she did some errands in Fall River (the city where Battleship Cove is). We ran all over that ship, along with other kids, and it was just awesome. I shot down a whole bunch of planes, in my little kid's fantasies, with the deck guns that back then actually moved with the little wheels. I'm smiling ear to ear just remembering my love of the Big Mamie.

I haven't been to Battleship Cove since Covid began. But before that, we've gone since I was a kid. Even before they acquired the Hiddensee. When we last went in 2018, the Kennedy's engine rooms were closed for restoration, and the Hiddensee was badly run down.

It was sold for scrap, was not falling apart. It was in poor shape. The US Navy hasn't owned it for decades now.

“Two or three hours?“ that wouldn’t do me for the day. That probably would be about enough for one ships’ worth.

Oh, totally! We just try to give estimates for families that may have younger children. Adults could spend days.

There were several variations of PT boats. He said only 2 restored like the one Kennedy was on, but it is possible for it to be a WW2 PT boat, but not the same model. Most were wooden, but a few were aluminum, and there were several variations of the wooden ones. I had a phase when I was a kid where I was very into PT boats. I was on one that had been converted to a fishing boat, but haven’t been on a restored one. I know there’s one in New Orleans as well. Someday…

Why are all the vessels so neglected, and, looking so poor?
@whyjnot420
@whyjnot420 2 жыл бұрын
1) They are museums, not active ships. 2) You know that it takes several tons of paint (literally) just to put a single coat on the decks and bulkheads of BB-59 alone. 3) Money. 4) New England weather. 5) Saltwater environment of Narragansett Bay (Mount Hope Bay is part of Narragansett Bay, but is at the mouth of the Taunton River, which is a tidal river, so the water is likely brackish, but I could be wrong about that, in any case you still would have the salt air from the bay)

They don’t have hundreds of captive swabbies on board to assign to the task, and that’s just for painting and keeping the decks kept up. The other 1000 men were doing other jobs.

It cost $25 to $100 million to keep the hull stable. $25 million if the museum do it every 25 years, and $100 million like the USS Texas because it hasn’t been dry docked for maintenance for about 40 years.

"The world's largest collection of World War II naval vessels!" Nope.... you have 2 ships that served in WWII, USS Massachusetts and USS Lionfish. All of the others are post WWII service ships. The Battleship Memorial Park in Alabama also has two genuine WWII ships. USS Alabama and USS Drum. The Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park also has 2 genuine WWII ships, USS Little Rock and USS The Sullivans. Patriots Point South Carolina also has 2 genuine WWII ships, USS Yorktown and USS Laffey. So not the largest and not unique either.

It is however the largest collection of naval vessels in the country. Though maybe not anymore since they scrapped Hiddensee.
