During this procedure of turning the key, does the deadbolt remain stationary as in the illustration--the deadbolt will not move in or out as the key is turned?

Not seeing a way to index so it can turn counterclockwise. On one door it locks clockwise, nice and smooth. But the left hand swing it has to turn counterclockwise and is very hard. It will go, but its not correct. If the latch had a + the blade could be rotated 90* and this would work perfectly.

Hi @pooleo8 - To get your Powerbolt 250 working smoothly, please follow these steps: 1. Open the door and lock the latch so that it's extended. Remove the key from the key cylinder. 2. Unscrew and remove the interior assembly of the lock and ensure that the Flat Blade piece is in the vertical position. 3. Reattach the interior assembly and keep the latch locked. Please do not try to unlock it and keep the key out as well. 4. Perform the Door Rehanding per step 15 with new batteries. 5. Ill give it a go. I just dont see how it can physically index the blade? Regardless i have to turn the interior lock counter clockwise. And that is the problem. It only operates effortlessly 90* one way or back. In order to make it work, the blade needs rotated 90* without operating the bolt. @kwikset

I'm a real-estate investor, I change the locks to brand new with every new tenant, usually buying a 2-pack or 3 the same key for each place then bringing them to recycle scrap yards. I inspected Kwikset entry doorknob locks, and they seem solid and to be a good product, but I always go with Defiant because for the 2-pck they run $11 cheaper than Kwikset at Home Depot and that adds up after a while. Also, my preference is having the bigger part of the keyhole towards the bottom and Defiant gives you that option where Kwikset you have to have it on the top.

@@kwikset Not a fan of batteries if I can help it, I'll go non battery route. Rentals do not have internet; tenants sign up on their own after move in. Also, I'm thinking numbers wear off from continuous touching. I'm thinking homeowners would love them though.

So someone can identify the numbers in your code by looking at the fingerprints on touchscreen, but I'm assuming they wouldn't be able to tell which order they're in (unless your code is 1111, 2222, 3333, etc)?

This works but there is no information about adding multiple codes at the same time during set. The end result is confusion and poor instruction booklet. There is no link to the other video.

Can you use any key when you try to rekey, or does it have to be a specific brand of key? I have a Schlage lock on another door and I’d like to use that key for the Kwikset lock, but it won’t go into the Kwikset at all; I tried inserting it before doing anything with the smart key, just to see if it would go in the lock and it wouldn’t.

This is one possibility, but not the only one. I've rekeyed a lot of these locks, and found that there are other problems that may occur with the Kwikset smartkey system. I've had several, that could not even be reset with the smartkey reset tool. Sometimes, this mechanism just does not work correctly. More than once have I had to completley disamble these to reset them, and I've had a couple that no matter what I did, they would not program correctly. These locks are mostly plastic, and are just a bad design, and are very poor security.

Good video. Helped me install three. However, neither you nor the manual covers re-handing the lock! One would not unlock or lock from the outside but would beep 5-times, indicating an obstruction. Thinking I'd done something wrong, I disassembled and reassembled twice. Same thing. Then I noticed a re-handing code in the manual, not discussed but buried in the coding chart: [Set Button] + 0 + [Lock]. That's an hour of frustration that I'd like back.

Great video. However, when I programmed the code, the auto lock or the deadbolt doesn’t come all the way out to lock the door.

Hi @TonyArmstrong-r9i - Please try the steps below to help fix this: 1. Check the lock's installation and the door alignment and ensure that the strike pocket is at least 1" deep. 2. Great tutorial. I did see one curve ball. At about 2:30 The thin lock bar goes from horizontal to vertical and the door lock is now extended out. He forgets to mention this small detail. Still a great video.

@ turns out I had to orient it, to do so you press the programming button once, then zero, then the kwikset button, it learned how to open and close in the proper direction and worked as it should after👍

This video is worthless. First, the outer lever had a minuscule set screw completely different from the interior lever. They provided an allen wrench for the inside one only. Second, the set screw on the inside lever is on the bottom and can only be installed with the lever pointing the wrong way. There doesn't seem to be a way to switch the direction of the inside lever. Kwiksets quality issues are immense. TYhis is the second unit I will have to return. I WILL NEVER USE KWIKSET AGAIN

How do I change the side my door opens on? Currently, my door opens from the right side toward the inside. When I use it this way, the lock is difficult to turn on and off.

With key in the lock-code can be programmed. Key cannot be removed unless latch is extended. Pull key out, code cannot be programmed. What did we do wrong?

The mechanism in the core of mine was sticky due to wear, so some of the pins were stuck "up" when I programmed. I could hear them drop when I took the key in and out and the only solution to fix mine was to remove the core and reprogram. Plenty of other videos how to do that and they do work. Also gives a great opportunity to oil the heck out of the guts of the core. Mine had metal shavings and clearly was in desperate need of some 3 in 1 oil. 8 years on and after I did all that they work like new!
