LIMITED USAGE ??? Streamlined B17's ! It was a "Gimmick" and post war by 1951, both Locos (renamed City of London & East Anglian for the publicity) so fitted, were stripped of this inconvenience to maintenance !

CAPROTTI MODELS ! The "British Caprotti" as opposed to the original "Italian Caprotti" was a separately Patented British "improved" version (By a Railway Engineer called Tom Daniels of locomotive valve gear). First fitted to a number of the Black 5's. But there were a number of greatly and very visually differing variations of this equipment on the "Black 5s". Hornby have chosen to model the early variant (Numbers 44738-55). This initial application to British locos revealed a minor issue in operation. These locos were found to be poor at low speed acceleration, but develop higher outputs and acceleration as Speed increased. Hence they were most suited to secondary express passenger work, in that form. Further being a 4-6-0 type for "Mixed Traffic" (BR rated them as 5MT) they were NOT in any case suited to heavy or "unfitted" type freight train use. Which raises a slight issue with this model ! Hornby have oddly fitted the Model with "Headlamps" for a Class 8 "unfitted" freight. A type of train usually limited to 30mph ! And a class of train it would NOT have been wise for such a loco to haul. Further putting a tail lamp on the rear centre bracket is another minor problem. As it sadly reveals Hornby have no comprehension of the rules governing Headcodes or tail lamp usage. The model would be more accurate if it came with a Class 1 (Express Passenger headcode) or a Class 2 (Stopping train Passenger headcode). Further tail lamps were rarely if ever hung on the centre rear lampbracket. Further a tail lamp is totally prohibited on the rear of ANY locomotive, unless the loco is to unusually make a "light engine" movement along a "Running Line". Such as from a station (where it has left its coaches) to a loco shed a couple of Miles away. And a tail lamp left on the rear of a loco hauling a train, would be stopped by the first signalman or railwaymen to spot it ! This is a serious violation of the Railway Safety Rules ! FREIGHT TRAINS - A FEW BASIC REQUIREMENTS. "Unfitted" (Class 8) freight trains were formations of wagons that had NO train brakes, only a hand operated parking brake on each wagon. BR painted such wagons normally Pale Grey, to clearly indicate this seriously hazardous issue. "Fitted" wagons, that's ones with train operated brakes (from the loco). And in the steam age this meant Vacuum Brakes, were wagons that were painted Red Oxide/Brown. This fact alone reveals why so much shunting of wagons was necessary at EVERY Stations Goods Yard or "Marshalling Yard" back in the steam era. And why there were more steam Shunting 0-6-0T engines than ALL other types put together. Because any "Brown" wagons had to be coupled immediately behind the loco, and any Pale Grey wagons had to be coupled behind the Brown ones, with of course a Guardsvan at the rear of EVERY freight train. Such a combination was called a "Part Fitted freight" as the locomotive could get help when braking from all the brown wagons, while any Pale Grey ones on the rear, were simply a serious and uncontrollable menace ! Trains of only "pale grey" wagons (Unfitted freight trains) were therefore normally the preserve of specifically Freight locomotive types. Most commonly a 2-8-0, or even 2-10-0 type, as these locos had slightly more "Brake Force", than a six coupled (0-6-0) type ! Although or in spite of the fact heavy locos are never the best type of vehicle for stopping any train in a hurry. (Not even modern traction today). XP RATED WAGONS Brown wagons marked "XP" (Express Passenger) were usually of the "Van" type, such as Perishables (Meat, Fruit or Vegetables) or even Horse Box wagons. And could therefore be included in a Passenger train, within limits. Such wagons had to be placed between the loco & the coaches, with a maximum of 5 allowed. But any such wagons included meant the whole train was limited to 60mph. So were not normally included in Express passenger trains, as the wagons presence would most likely make the train late ! Happy Modelling 😀

In the initial BR era (late 1940s) as that loco appears to be (no BR crest, just writing), I'd say the carriages should be in the Blood & Custard livery. Did BR Mk1s even exist then 🤔 Ah, just remembered, I bought by accident, a few Gresley teaks in unlined teak (thinking they were bargain LNER teaks), which had BR markings on them. They are rare I think. They would definitely be appropriate.

Agreed as Blood and Custard was adopted in 1948, Maroon not until 1956. However I can't find anything definitive as to When the Lack of Crest (Just Writing) was replaced (1950?). Early Crests were 1948-56, but not sure crests were added to all locos. Many wore an early crest way after 1956.

@worthingtonmodelrailway8628 Did those locos on the lessor East Coast routes even pull the ECML express Gresley Teaks or some other types before BR Mk1s became available. I don't know.

Back in 1937 the Streamlined B17's were originally used on the "East Anglian" service and had a special set of 6 varnished teaks built specifically for the service (neither streamlined or articulated). Who knows what they pulled in later years, probably whatever was available. BTW MK1's appeared in 1951

@@worthingtonmodelrailway8628 My apologies, not having a go at you. If it's half the number of 'chuffs', then perhaps the Lord Nelson one could work, if it's on there? That should be 8 / revolution, so in typical Hornby lack of chuffs, it may be 'chuffed enough' !!

I do like the Coronation class, some of my favourite locos. I have the Dublo 'City of Lichfield' plus a few others with 'Sir William A. Stanier' in the gorgeous Crimson lake livery being my favourite. The Tooling for Hornby Coronations is from 2016. It's good on detail but misses a few of the features that have come out in recent years. The Princesses that were tooled in 2018 were the first Hornby models with firebox flicker. Whilst there are probably other locos that need retooling more urgently, the Coronations are always popular and I wouldn't be surprised if Hornby were to release some with steam generators, lights and firebox flicker in the next few years. The same with the A4s as both are always big sellers.

This is probably not a great way to test, but I guess if you brave enough. Try putting a very VERY tiny drop of water onto the ultrasonic atomizer inside the funnel. Then turn F1 on, and see if it vibrates that small drop into "steam". If it does, then I wonder if Hornby didn't position the cotton wick inside properly. I have found on my P2, that if you don't run the loco for a long time, it does take a little while for the cotton wick to start soaking up the water. I've filled mine up to the correct amount, and it may still take about 30 minutes before it starts 'steaming'.

LNER STREAMLINERS 1935-39 - NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN ! Great if your modelling the two year period this train operated on the LNER (1937-39). Which World War Two put an end to all these 3 streamlined trains. The "Silver Jubilee" (from 1935), the "Coronation" with observation car, and the "West Riding" from 1937 to 1939. Realistically limiting their usefulness on any Model Railway I would say !!!

Correct, Wooden Bodied Mineral Wagons came in multiple "plank" heights, 3, 5, 7, 8 and some were fitted with an additional frame for "coke" bulkier but lighter than coal. The later Steel wagons were classified by tonnage 16 ton, 21 ton etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_wagon

I live in Florida, but I do like British trains along with American and Canadian ones. I have a dealer in Ontario whom I buy from. Nigel is very good, and has many deals on used models. Well, in a case of "small world," I purchased two wagons that you also show here. They are 33-650C Cattle Wagon BR Brown, and 37-025 5 Plank Wagon Steel Floor 'Quarrite.' I also purchased one very similar to what you purchased. It is 33-178 10 Ton Covered Salt Wagon I.C.I. Salt. Same production run, just different name. Another wagon which is the same, but mine must be an older run is 33-508 14 Ton Tank Wagon 'Yorkshire Tar Distillers.' I believe your 37-657 14 Ton Tank Wagon 'Rothervale' Black is the same model, again different name.

Great selection of wagons, particularly like the motor manufacturer's vans, I believe the Bisto van molding represents a sliding door from the centre to the right of the van, as the molded runner implies, could be wrong, at the end of the day it looks good anyway. I agree that Dapol and some other manufacturers do go a bit heavy on factory weathering, must say not always a fan. ...Drew
