A wasted video due to the dismal and unnecessary music and total lack of verbal explanation. I gave up after 2 minutes!

Rust is iron oxide, a molecule that is larger than iron or iron carbide molecules. The larger molecules crowd each other, break loose and come off. Phosphoric acid converts the iron surface to iron phosphate which is a smaller molecule producing a stable surface. Phosphoric acid doesn’t remove rust, it can convert a clean steel surface to a stable surface.

Your mobile English Wheel is pure genius sir. I would totally enjoy watching you work with it for many hours. Because what your doing is poetry with metal IMHO.

The main problem I have it all this takes practice and I am only on my second car so don't get much practice. If you're doing it professionally and being trained or doing lots of cars by yourself of course you get better eventually. I am remaking a panel on my car although I did try some of your techniques you show here to save it which did help but in the end were too many mistakes in it (over-shaped, horrific tracking marks and really bad welds!). I left that one and started on other panels and did a much better job (also after modifying my wheel somewhat). I will go back and remake the first panel and should have much more success. Not having any experience or anything to compare to, knowing what's good enough is hard too. According to a neighbour who used to own a panel shop I am at the 'high build will cover that' stage which is probably good enough for me with a painted car! If it were to be polished aluminium I would have a bit more work to do.

Maybe be it's me I think the flow lines " Slight ripples" that one mite pic apart "TO ME" displays the love of the craft and when its polished Wow, will really display the beauty of the panel and your effort . A stamped panel shows nothing but a another cookie cutter panel. I like mans dedication Its shows Can Do!

An excellent tutorial in panel correction but when you TIG weld the sections together - won't you induce distortion into the panels again requiring redress? Are your English wheels and anvils hardened and ground?
@proshaper17 күн бұрын
Yes, the panels will have distortion from the welding, but that is not a problem. You stretch the welded areas out and if you go too far you use a shrinking disc to dial them back. I have been English wheeling since 1985, I have never made or had a hardened lower anvil, you don't need to harden them. The top wheel needs to be hardened. We make and sell the wide and large wheels and anvils, yokes, etc.

Wray - you have done a fantastic job of showing the 'intimate details' of what it takes to get a panel shaped to near perfection. I did not see your earlier invitation to collaborate on some project, but I would be VERY interested in that! Let me 'noodle' some ideas, (and maybe you can too), and we'll have a conversation!

Is there such a thing as a panel which can be shaped showing the simplest of skills, then intermediate skills, then advanced skills all in one panel? Not necessarily to make a part, rather to make a panel do 'all' the things 2 skilled craftsman can do or a determined home shaper can work toward.

Great video, the panel is looking closer and closer. What causes a live edge if the edge hasn't been stretched, and, why does wheeling 45 inboard fix it?
@proshaper24 күн бұрын
A live edge is very common, it will appear when you are developing panels. In this case I created it in a effort to raise the edge up relative the inboard over stretched area which was done by a student. To make it go away you have to wheel inboard wheeling in a 45 % angle pattern works very effectively.
