This is honestly analog horror done right. I know it's not specifically meant to be horror and scary, but it is unsettling and pretty great. Also, there is in universe reasons as to why they use tapes instead of digital video, as no digital equipment works inside the Oldest house, so they have to use analog stuff most of the time

Both things are true. 1) The guy was a jerk and no one saw him as a friend. 2) Death is a reminder that we should be compassionate to each other because we all share humanity (and mortality). The problem is that Daria fails to show compassion to a fellow human. And Jane and the school are idealizing a mean person just because he died. The solution is to accept both things as true: Yes, he was a jerk, and they should not gloss over the bad stuff he did. And at the same time they can express compassion for him because that's what makes us human. Love your enemies, someone once said. Maybe that's too next-level for Daria.

i love that they just seamlessly switch between talking about their parents and framing it like they're different people, yet it only makes sense if you read it as the sort of childlike mistake they might expect kids to make, like when you learn about it first and maybe even the note is addressed to you because you had a closer relationship with that parent than your sibling (?) did so it's awkward, like topher just learned there's reason to worry about *his* mom after hearing the news about meg's but possibly instead of him projecting his mom onto meg's having made the actual mistake here (as meg has been shown to be p dissociated relatively and often speaks as if in trance) which is to say "my" instead of "our"
