Feeding birds is not the answer...plant their food...there is compelling science (a la Douglas Tallamy et al) that 96% of birds need food from moths and butterflies. Chickadees need 7000 to 9000 caterpillars to raise one clutch of eggs. Feeding birds brings them together in abnormal ways...the water source, especially, should be constantly turning over and misting makes sense too for pathogen control. Your yard can be a haven for birds and other animals. I love native plant gardening and learning that THE PLANTS support almost every form of biodiversity. Governments do nothing, but I am out on my property, removing introduced species, and planting native ones...as a result my home is a sanctuary. I don't need to get into a car to get the peaceful feeling that wilderness provides...it is all alive right out there...27 kinds of warblers off the back porch.
