If Donald Trump “is elected as the next president of the United States, we are one step closer to operating under a dictatorship.”
Ken Burns sits down with Cassidy Hutchinson, former White House aide for Mark Meadows and witness to the Capitol riot on January 6, to discuss her new book, ENOUGH, what she sees as the consequences of a second Trump presidency, and her experience in the final days of the January 6th investigation.
Catch up on more interviews with Ken Burns as part of the UNUM Chats series here: www.pbs.org/kenburns/unum

If Donald Trump becomes our next president, democracy as we know it will be over. He is mentally unstable and cares for no one but himself and his own agenda. If we allow him to get elected we disrespect the sacrifices that our grandfather's in WWII fought so hard for: to overrun a dictator.

In addition to Cassidy‘s book, I strongly advise everyone to also read Liz Cheney’s book. She comes off as an honest, courageous young woman who has more courage in her pinky finger than the majority of the elected Republicans who lack the ethics, morals, and balls to take on a lying narcissistic loser when all it would take is to TELL THE TRUTH that the majority of them will admit to in private. Compare her to Mark Meadows...hands down a stark contrast in courage, patriotism, ethics, and morals.

Yes and 98% of my life I have always believed that the vast majority of this country are decent people like her who care more for the country, future generations, than we care about ourselves. one has to remember how young and inexperienced she was to be in such a position, in her book , while she was raised to be a republican, it was her lifelong dream to work for America in government. From being an unpaid intern , her professionalism and excellence in her job gradually brought her into the inner circles of republican power , not a dedicated belief in MAGA immorality. Although she does admit that the job demands had her so busy, she became completely engulfed in that world, until she snapped out of it. I think it also helped that trump liked to be around pretty women, and she is very dedicated and high function at work.

it's the result of multigenerational conservative brain rot. She was told to be a conservative by her parents and continued to be a conservative into adulthood, likely not giving it much thought until a major shock to her system jarred her (slightly) out of her brainwashing. I've seen it a lot with 'young conservatives.' They are often incapable of thinking outside the boxes their families put them in.

Trump WILL be the 47th -- and FINAL -- POTUS this year, and she and the rest of MAGA will go down in the history books as the fuel Trump (and his billionaire backers) used to light the country on fire. When looking for heroes from the Republican party, beggars can't be choosers. But let's not go overboard on how principled she is. Trump, when asked in a 2016 debate with Hilary Clinton if he would accept the results of the election, he said "we'll see". No principled person could have voted for Trump after that. Anyway, I'm grateful that she's seen the light.

@@SisterWomen No need to project a closed mind on Democrats. There is no such thing as 'Democrat' mischief. All the mischief here belongs to Trump and the high level sycophants supporting as Cassidy admits she did. She went to work for the Republicans as part of it sounds like family tradition but with the honor and values of a John McCain and let herself be seduced by fealty to the leader. She presents the clarity that her values and the values of the constitution of equality and safety within the law and respect for 'the least of us' as one could learn from following Christ are neither Democratic or Republican but of the American people. Stockholm Syndrome is exactly what happens to cult followers and DJT is nothing but a cult leader, a psychopath hell bent on controlling everything and endowed with tremendous hatred witnessed in his constant cruel rantings in public. Those traits have zip to do with what political party one chooses. Still as Cassidy so eloquently explains he is the demagogue the founders warned would try to destroy us. Cassidy Hutchinson covers in her book what she has related to Ken Burns in this discussion but in so much more depth in the book. "Enough" is such important background reading for what we will have to face going forward. It answers so many questions about people in Trump's orbit and lends an understanding needed to make sense of the "why".

The is the best interview I’ve seen with Cassidy Hutchinson. Maybe it’s because she’s had months of experience on the circuit or maybe she’s gotten some good coaching, but there’s no denying that Ken Burns is the best interviewer. She should feel honored.

She's more comfortable with speaking the truth before a wide audience. Something I doubt she ever imagined she'd be doing at this juncture in her life. It's no small thing to do what she's done...she didn't have to but she did. How many of us could say the same?

Cassidy talks about her moral compass changing over time, and she became more revealing to the Jan.6 committee, I hope that continues and it changes her view of the democratic party, the Democratic party is more in line with her moral beliefs, the Democrats are far from perfect, but I can't name anything the Republicans have done for the middle class, it's always been trickle down economics and tax cut's for the top 1%, I'm willing to pay for both Republicans and democrats campaigns with tax dollars and pay them much higher salaries, but NO private contributions if they take private money they loose there seat and or Jail, they work for us, not the highest contributors to there campaigns

And her _final solution_ is that _we_ need to _listen to_ these people! Did we need to learn to listen to the Nazi Party or the Empire of Japan in 1940?? Otherwise, very well spoken. But former MAGA people really require a more thorough introspection before telling _US_ that _WE_ need to listen! - j q t -

I was fortunate to see the screening of an early Ken Burns documentary at Lincoln Center in New York. The film was about Huey Long, another dubious populist leader who was on the rise in Louisiana and nationally in the Franklin Roosevelt era. Mr. Burns was there at the theater along with the late Robert Penn Warren that day. Seeing this interview with the great Cassidy Hutchinson is every bit as impactful and important as I perceived that day to be.

This interview is simply amazing! Without a doubt the person who has explained American History above, and beyond no other, interviewing a person who helped change history right before our eyes! Granted, were in the current stage of happenings, but the respect given by "Ken Burns" no less to Cassidy Hutchinson, and her acknowledgement of Liz, and Adam, and Jamie, and Nancy is truely what I was brought up to believe! Great interview! Thank God we have rationally thinking people who care for our country, and its people!!!

As an outside observer, I would say there are a number of guardians of the Republic, from both parties, Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Joe Biden, and others… it is vital for the world that America is the beacon for democracies and countries aspiring to be democratic… yes, one of America’s strengths and a weakness is embracing the problems that it faces that are common everywhere… yes, this means work! Democracy is work!

I will be eternally grateful to Cassidy having her "ought oh", moments that led to her January 6th testimony. So many in the same situation would have succumbed to peer pressure & the notion of personal advancement coupled to, it's no skin off my knees, so why not turn a blind eye to the situation, and a dumb mouth in front of the nation. Ken is correct, we citizens are not a gang of illterate idiots that need to be strong armed or led by a pied piper like figure whose aim is only self satisfaction. Ken is a historian, filmmaker, author, I am a theorectical mathematician by education, my father was a metalurgical engineer, my grandfather was a millwright, my uncles were either an accoutant or an electrical engineer, my niece holds two masters with one in Criminal Justice, my friend was a 9/11 fireman in NYC, my older sister's daughters are public school teachers, my nephew is a small business owner and these people are similar to only a few grains of sand on the beach for there are millions more having similar roles in our society. Each one of the mentioned and all those not mentioned make this country what it is. The politician without us is like an empty vessel that has little value & we must really take a stand this november to make sure that we do not go the way Russia ultimately traveled after the fall of the Soviet Union. Nothing, like Ken suggested has ever been as dangerous to this nation as what exists today.

Ken Burns is a national treasure. He brings to light so many valuable, but difficult, truths to our national attention. He doesn't shy away from them simply because someone's feelings might be hurt. And yet he tells us about our history with such empathy, sensitivity and compassion that you can come away with a greater understanding of those individuals and groups who might be considered as on the wrong side of history. Cassidy Hutchinson, in my opinion, is a flawed hero. Yes, she had a great deal of courage to step away from the sycophants and testify truthfully and no doubt she pays a daily price from maga's for choosing the constitution over trump. However, just like any other trump voter, I question how she could have voted for him in the first place. All the warning signs were there in 2015 and they weren't subtle they were in your face. Hillary was eerily correct in her prediction of how Donald would wind up behaving. And yet his voters rationalized it all away and they are prepared to do it again even though his messaging is even worse this time around than in 2015. I can only hope there is a silent majority out there that includes a lot of reformed voters like Cassidy but the polls are not filling me with hope.

Have you ever been polled? I haven't and I've lived over 7 decades. Trump was rejected for a second term in office by the majority of the American people in 2020...why would anyone think that number has changed over the past three + years..if not increased exponentially. So few of us ask how these supposed polls are conducted. What methodology is being used? Online? Cell phone? Landline? What part of the country? How many people were polled out of the 330 million population in the US? What questions were asked? Were the respondents primarily Republicans? Democrats? Independent voters (the largest number of voters in the US at this juncture).

The entire world owes Ms Hutchinson a great deal and I thank her for her extraordinary courage. HOWEVER, I stopped viewing 19 minutes into the video when I realized that along with at least 81 million plus other Americans, by her description, she might not consider us to be even a part of the "spine" of America as she believes her hardworking parents and others like them to be. Hardworking, for me, is a subjective term. For instance is it: a 60 year old coal miner who began working at 13 and once able never missed casting their vote in every election, or is it someone who studied hard, taking out and then repaying the mother lode of student loans needed so that they could spend 30 or 40 years as a teacher, or an engineer, or a medical doctor, etc yet never once exercised their right to vote. That said, one citizen to another, I again thank Ms Hutchinson and sincerely wish her well.

I appreciate what she did at the January 6 hearings. It still baffles me, however, how such an intelligent young woman could ever have fallen under Donald Trump's spell until January 6. Just because he ran as a Republican? Seriously. The minute I saw Trump during the 2016 debates (I had heard about him but was not too familiar with him), ALL my alarm bells went off. His arrogance, self-aggrandizement, narcissistic personality, ignorance, and just downright meanness were flashing and I thought we just can't have this person as president! Unfortunately, he was elected then. And ever since, we have suffered the ill effects of his time in office.
