Having lived in the Virgin Islands for 20+ years, I was much inspired by the designs of Dick Newick and good friend Roger Hatfield. Have sailed on quite a few and eventually decided to build a Lock Crowther Twiggy Mk IIB up in the hills of Tortola. Couldn't do that with Roger or Dick's designs, cos "Wingover" was built in separate units and assembled on the beach. (Now that Launch Party was a PARTY !!) She took me 4 years to build, she sailed beautifully and was very easy on the eye, with wingmast, mast lowering struts, water ballasting, spade rudder assy., whipstaff steering, etc. I sold her some time ago and since she like us, has sailed to Europe and completed many of the intensely gruelling Round Britain and Ireland Race, winning her class in one. She was last seen in Isle de Oleron (near La Rochelle) in France. Roger Hatfield was incredibly helpful and I do miss that 'island style' way of life. Fair winds and broad reaches to y'all ! Bill

This is a really nice boat. Not "good for a scrappy conversion" but just properly nice. It's simple. pretty cramped for an 80-footer, but four cabins, three bathrooms, all well done and properly holding... what more does one want? Will you ever reveal how much you spent on all this beauty including the conversion? I wonder how it looked in its time. I also wonder how fast it goes? I follow another family here on youtube who did a racer conversion. But they chose an IMOCA-60 (66?) boat for conversion. Very different boat, and a different result. Craaaazy!!!! 🙂 But it flies 20 knots on just a main and a jib... and chews through sails like cheese. I wonder how racy your racer is. How deep is your keel, by the way? Yes, I watched the resoration slideshow, might have missed it. Anyway, cool boat. Good job! Kudos.
@Camarasailing2 ай бұрын
Thank you. She’s actually got 5 cabins and an additional 3 open berths. We’ve had our family come cruise with us for a few weeks and it’s nice not being crammed in even when there were 9 of us on the boat. The reason we haven’t revealed the final cost is because it is hard to put a number to it considering we did all the work ourselves and got a lot of materials at really good prices. We spent about NZ$300k excluding our time etc. The other boat you are following is probably our friends on NV. Very different kind of boats and very different kind of refits. She’s faster than our boat but in terms of a conversion to a comfortable cruiser I think ours is more practical with a 2.7m draft, a dry inside of the boat when sailing and most importantly privacy. Something that was important for us cruising as a family for over 20 years and especially once the kids were teenagers! We usually cruise at a speed of 8-10kts without pushing which is fast enough for us. The fastest we’ve sailed her is at 15kts. Previous owners have sailed at speeds above 20kts but like I said we don’t push her like that. Her racing days are over and we try and make the gear last and avoid breakage and stressing out the rig… Thanks for following along :-)

Thank you. We can’t quite remember but tend to think it was two layers of 6mm and the bulkheads were also 12mm. There is a website about dick newick’s designs and if I remember correctly there were plans to purchase as well. Perhaps Google search and you may find a big step towards building your dream boat 😉 Good luck with the project - exciting!

Any details on the cost of purchase and refit?
@Camarasailing6 ай бұрын
If you read through the comments this has been asked quite a bit. It’s a tricky one to answer because this project would cost someone else potentially a whole lot more than what it cost us. We only took her on as a project because we knew we could do all the work ourselves, had no hardstand costs and access to great prices on materials. Between purchase and what we’ve spent we are at around $300-$350k NZD but like I said, that’s with free hardstand, not employing anyone etc.

When you hone barrels you are not polishing them and making them shiny, you trying to make a "plateau", so it has an XX pattern at a 45° angle to hold/direct the oil to where its needed and to wear the rings in. You are trying to cut the glaze off and if you just polishing it, or making your hone lines all haphazard at the wrong angles, you just wasting a set of rings and could be damaging the cylinders and then you need to re-bore and go oversize pistons and rings to fix it. And it might look like its working at first but if you don't remove the glaze or you polishing it, the rings wont bite and you'll still get blow back and your lubrication wont be optimal.

Yes, good point, that is why we are moving the drill up and down to cross hatchet. We’ve done this engine rebuild a year ago and the motor is running sweet and the back pressure is gone so we are stoked 😉

nice rebuild, very useful that you're able to drop the oil pan in mounted condition and you didn't have to replace the cylinder sleeves... i asume you overhauled the injectors as well and checked the oil pump for wear.

i found it very funny when you mentioned "and just like that the engine rebuild is done and dusted..."from my experience, given all the tools & parts needed are provided, it would take two skilled mechanics around 4-5 full working days to do the job...@@Camarasailing
