My wainwright books are one of my life’s treasures, I have some very old editions that i absolutely adore. Well listening to you recite AW about Binsey I have to do this one even if it is a linear escapade. A worthy amount given to my favourite Blencathra and its Sharp Edge. For that matter, no children are "daft" either. Those were the days when you were sent to the classroom corner with a dunce's cap on. Although I can't remember that happening at Grasmere school where I started like my brothers before me in 1958. We left for Germany in 1961, so when I mentioned Blencathra to one of my brothers, I had to tell him that he knew the mountain as Saddleback. Great walk Alistair and with a view like that from the summit I can see why it is your favourite mountain, it was stunning. I did The Old Man and a handful of other summits a couple of years ago with a fellow KZbinr but still have Wetherlam, Great Carrs, Grey Friar and Swirl Hows to do. I have been given some very conflicting advice on best routes and worryingly routes and descent defiantly not to do, as in their words, they are dangerous, all very concerning, especially when you are walking alone. Any information of best and safest routes/descents from a 'Local Lad', would be appreciated, cheers Alan
@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad
@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad 2 ай бұрын
Hi Alan, the safest (although nav possibly a bit complicated) would be from Coniston. Coppermines Valley, Levers Water, Swirl Hause, then NE ish to the summit. A variation for descent would be Southish down Ladstones (a very broad ridge) to Hole Rake then back to Coniston. The reverse of these routes would be good as well! Save for a good clear day then all will be much clearer 👍 Enjoy, cheers Alistair 👍

But I'm back driving (and riding) now and feeling much better mentally and physically 👍 I don't think Little Mell Fell would offer any potential, but Great Mell Fell would be a possibility... you'd need a decent dry spell, it's damp to say the least! Near the summit there's a bit of grass, you would have to carry all your water from the car. Great place for views, sunrise and sunset will be available. I’ll head up this way again soon, and we may end up meeting up which would be so interesting. Of course, if you live in the village of Witherslack nearby, you may recall further into the village. There was a village shop many years ago which is now a private house, and what is Knowth Village Shop is Virtually adjacent to the Derby Arms. Of course, you can also head to Beck Head where there is Witherslack cycle barn. The village and surrounding areas certainly has not changed much and again extremely poignant.

Hello, and congratulations on climbing this hill. I am certainly no stranger to this neck of the woods as when you climb the Scar, you will see a very good view of the good old boarding school I proudly attended once called Witherslack Hall now renamed Oversands school, and to say this is the best and the right school I ever attended would be a complete understatement so therefore, yes, I certainly liked it very much. I wish it could have turned into a college and if they had taken over the farm when it was a farm adjacent to the school, I’d gladly have gone back, studied and stayed for the right job. I’m certainly not the only one who attended who has similar feelings, though, sure, enough, school days, were never perfect like anywhere, but on the whole, I have to say once again, I liked it very much and I always wanted to give back. When I was at the school, we also took frequent trips up this adjacent hill through the woods and we even did part of our cross country run up and over the hill. If you go down the footpath at the top of the road, before you head down the track, you will see the gate to the entrance of the school, and keep going down the track, you will bypass on your left hand side, the big games field which belongs to the school. I often take trips up this way, stay at the Derby Arms and I have even stayed at what was the farm when it was an equestrian centre until recently. It was fabulous being back and I have also visited the good old school on my own and with other former lads. During September 2021, an old school mates of mine, his girlfriend and I walked up this hill, and I had a complete ball as we came across Lords seat and other nearby beauty spots. Again, extremely poignant, and I could speak forever of my achievements at that school and I always wanted to give back. Again, take me back 30 odd years ago or whenever, had the right opportunity arisen, I certainly would love to have gone back under the right circumstances and again, I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Great to hear of your love for the former school. I was born and lived in Bowness in the 60's and 70's, my girlfriend was born in Winster! We both know the area extremely well. It's beautiful and much less popular than the Central Lakes 👌 Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers Alistair 👍

Talking of them school days I spent at Witherslack, here is a song we used to frequently sing during my attendance.
