What is the brand/model of your drum carder? How many TPI?
@jkfiberarts
@jkfiberarts 4 күн бұрын
Hi. It’s a Clemes &Clemes double wide crankless elite drumcarder. TPI is 72, but the tines come sharpened so it can card fine fibers. Thanks for watching! Spin Happy!

I wonder if when you take the small dowel out of the center, if you laid it on top of the fibre if that would give you more even grip across the rolag when you draft it out? Hope that made sense. Beautiful rolags nonetheless.
@jkfiberarts
@jkfiberarts 7 күн бұрын
Thank you. If I understand what you are saying I think it would still be the same thing. I would draft and roll and I would be back to where I was with the metal rod rolling up in it as it was in the beginning. I will try it out and see if I am visualizing it correctly! Thanks for watching, Spin Happy!

I’m in the process of working myself through the most gorgeous chocolate coloured alpaca fleece. Hardly any guard hairs, soft as a whisper, and barely any VM. I tried spinning it unwashed and within minutes my fingers were black. So I changed gears and washed a sample. Boy, was it dirty! The water turned dark grey and despite shaking it out thoroughly, the amount of sand that came out had me gobsmacked. You’re right, processing alpaca fibre is easy. And a spin dryer is a blessing, as it means that on a warm day, the fibre is dry within an hour. And then, you get to play… I don’t have a carder, so I comb it into little nests that I spin as fine as I can to knit into gossamer shawls. The lace it produces is like a dream. I now want two more fleeces, a white one and a grey one. To be able to switch things up and possibly blend them into undyed gradients. The farm my fleece comes from is only a 10-minute drive from where I live and a raw fleece costs less per weight as the cheapest merino top I can find… around half. So it’s well worth the effort! Besides, it’s really nice to be able to tell someone the animal’s name and age when you gift them something you made out of homespun yarn. 😊

Glad to hear your success! I am also glad you washed your alpaca so you can appreciate its full beauty! If you spin it dirty, you will never be able to wash all dirt out once it’s yarn. I am jealous of your fleece connection! Spin Happy!

My goodness, this is just beautiful! One of the yarns I still have on my spinning wish list is a very, very gradual transition from a lighter colour to a darker one. Then I want to knit a lace shawl with it, center outwards, triangular, with the edge as the darkest part. Still working on the planning of it all.

i always tie a knot at the end of the pled yarn, then cut the little loop in half before letting it wind on the bobbin .. that way theres no way the ply is coming loose.

Several creators have posted "ply on the fly" with their Turkish spindles. I have tried it and it is pretty cool but I have not done it enough to get a good consistent chain. Love the yarn today!!❤

I’m equally in love with spinning on my Turkish spindles. I first tried a drop spindle, and hated the whole process, much to my surprise. But with my first twirl of my first Turkish spindle, I felt like I had come home. Your video posting is perfect timing for me. I am almost finished spinning my Snow on the Pines rolags from you, and started thinking about how best to ply my singles. I think it will be a two-ply. My initial spin was more inconsistent than I like for trying to chain ply. It was quite fun to see your Ig post in Banff this morning, and have you plying in your living room this afternoon. Thanks for making a video for your vacation away time! harpingJanet

@@jkfiberarts one thing I found important, and I see your turk maker understands this, is knowing the weight of your spindles...light for fine, heavier for thicker singles or plying...it does matter. But it is such a portable way to get spinning done.

Hi Deb! I used the Clemes and Clemes Crankless Elite Double Wide Drumcarder. It is electric. Has 72 TPI and can comb fine fibers as well as regular fiber because the tines are sharpened. It is a great piece of equipment. Hand made and very versatile. I love it. My first DC was an Ashford hand crank and has TPI 72 but can not comb fine fiber, it will break it and cause neps, but it is a good entry level carder. Brother super carder is also very nice. Price points vary widely. The Clemes and Clemes run $2500-$4,000 US mine is the highest end. Brother carders are similarly priced. The Ashford was $750 a few years back. I had to wait 8 months to get my Clemes and Clemes. Brother Carders are readily available. Camaj Fiber Arts and Fairily Fiber Fun are licensed distributors for Brother. Strautch Mad Batter is also great carder, but I believe they are no longer making them, but you could probably find one used. It really depends on what you want to do with it. If you are going to use it daily/ weekly you may want an electric to save your shoulder. Happy hunting!

Are you blending it, or is it from someone else? You may be using too large clumps. I spread it out pretty thin in most blends, to avoid big chunks.
@faradayfarm4800
@faradayfarm4800 Ай бұрын
@jkfiberarts could definitely be blending but I'm thinking it is more about drafting when you have many different fiber types and lengths?

I try to use fibers that work well together and I try to blend them more. I often run them through the carder twice. Or I run the fiber I am going use through once and then blending in the batt is the second time.

Thanks for taking us through your process. It was especially fun for me as I am chain plying a hand dyed (not by me) merino, silk, cashmere blend into a pink, maroon, purple, blue gradient. It's such a meditative and creative process to use our brains and our hands to orchestrate the look we want. And it brings so much joy from picking out the fiber to testing and spinning and then knitting it up! Then wearing the product of all that loving focus or gifting it to someone special! Thank you for your great videos.
