My legs said "Fuck no" when you got to Quimby. They were sore, but still workable lol. You are a beast man!

I was attempting of this combo of mountains but I got burned out on Mt. Hamilton and ended just doing that and the IBM hill.

I did mt Hamilton last year as a recreational cyclist. Took me 3 hours to get to the top but it was worth every pedal stroke and every drop of sweat. Descending was unbelievably fun. Thanks for sharing this video.

Nice job! I've long wanted to do this ride! Adding Metcalf and Quimby on the Hammy side is no joke! Awesome!

Nice job!! Have done Umunhum - Hamilton a bunch of times but it never occurred to me to get to Quimby via Metcalf. Early morning is always the best time of day to do these climbs when it's quiet and serene. Got to check the 4 Summits of my personal bucket list two years ago when I continued onto Diablo and Tam for the full loop around the Bay.

The BEST thing about California is all the amazing climbs we have! They're seemingly everywhere, not difficult to get to, the traffic is pretty sparse once the climbing starts and the views are pretty fucking epic.

What, couldn't throw in Bohlman-On Orbit while you were at it? Kidding, just thinking about doing Hicks/Umunhum and Hamilton in one ride makes my legs twitch in rebellion.

@Kessoutwest7 күн бұрын
Oh man you did it the hard way for sure. Metcalf AND Quimby? If you ride to the beginning of Hamilton and ride Hamilton Full instead of cutting off the first climb by taking Quimby the ride ends up being like 1,500 feet less of climbing with a WAY lower average gradient. You’re a beast for doing it this way, though. 💪 Congrats

Umunhum is my local mountain and I can barely can make it up hicks each time. Can’t imagine knocking out quimby after let alone mt ham. You’re a beast my dude. Ride safe

Looove Umunhum. North Hicks leading to it is so brutal. I used to ride it up often when the road wasn't open all the way up. When they finally opened it up and repaved. My god. What a gift to cyclists. I'm in Mtn View so don't get to ride it as often but for sure gonna visit more this year. Rode Hamilton quite a bit too. It's been a while but I recall Quimby is about 4x harder than taking it the regular route! Little North of Hamilton, Sierra road is pretty killer too I think. Fun facts from PJAMM cycling Hicks Road North is the most difficult road bike climb in Santa Clara County and the Bay area. This monster bike climb has the steepest five mile segment in all of California, and the eighth steepest in the US (79th World).

Ugh… Quimby is just unpleasant and, frankly, dangerous since it’s so narrow. I always choose to start at Alum Rock and thus bypass it altogether.
@Metal_Face_Doom7 күн бұрын
Amen to that! Until this ride, I has only ever driven on it twice and saw how narrow some of the sections are. I chose this route for the sheer challenge and elevation gain. I might attempt climbing it in the future just so I know I can get up and over in one shot.

Kind of wild this video got recommended to me. I know most of these roads *extremely* well, especially Kennedy, Hicks & Mt. Umunhum, but even the very start of your ride... we take our dog to that dog park next to the soccer fields! Uncanny. I did a bike race up Mt. Hamilton once, which was an interesting experience. Had to sprint the last 300 meters after all that climbing to beat a couple guys I'd been riding with. lol. You are in great shape... especially for this time of year! You need to sign up for the Death Ride! It starts in Markleeville, just south of Lake Tahoe. It's 109 miles and 13K+ of climbing, but it starts at 6,000 ft above sea level and goes over several mountains at around 9,000 feet. The high altitude makes that climbing a lot more challenging. The really nice part is the roads are closed to cars for almost the entirety of the course. It's all reserved for the cyclists, which is great. Happens in mid-July every year. If you're a glutton for climbing punishment, it's the event for you. Tons of Bay Area riders do it every year. Congratulations on this ride; EPIC!!!!!

Rad! I live just up the peninsula from you and have done basically this same ride before, just not via Metcalf / Quimby (I went up Hamilton via the Alum Rock direction). NOT easy, so kudos! Ever ride with RCC up out of the city? I plan rides every so often and am often trying to get more involvement down the peninsula.
@smouvemouves7 күн бұрын
Hey dude! I'm actually planning to drive up and join a few of the Rapha city rides this year. (Last year's Day in Hell Ride inspired me to do this.) I definitely would be interested in rides closer to the peninsula - I spend a ton of time driving far out of SJ to do rides and could use a change. Cheers!

Great effort! I visited Mt. Umunhum when it was still functioning as a radar station. Don't remember much; need to try to find some of Dad's photos from that day! Thrilled it's open as park land with a fantastic new(ish) road. SO MUCH BETTER than the old road I used to ride! 8:45 is how I usually do Umunhum these days!!! Nice G Series Targa!!!

@mihailc.1738 38 minutes ago Awesome ride, congrats! Inspirational. I’ve done both summits but individually. Never thought to link them. I think it could also be fun to start w Mt. Hamilton, from Alum Rock (East San Jose), summit Hamilton, then return on Quimby, San Phelipe Rd. to Metcalf, and then Umunhum, and back. What kind of training do you usually do, before events like this?

If you're looking for an awesome cycling trip during the holiday season, Maui is the place!! The Pedal Imua event is a great way to circle the beautiful West Maui Loop while taking in the breathtaking views. In 2024, Pedal Imua is going to offer a gravel version of this event - that is not to be missed!

That is one of the worst “gravel” routes put together 🤦🏾♂️ I don’t understand why everyone wants to ride West Sac and along the southern portion of the river when there are much better trails and fun to be had around Sac State and further north/northeast along the river. I guess this is gravel for roadies? SMH.

Good video. I like that you showed some of the logistics at the beginning. Considering doing this myself but am a little intimidated by the hills. I did a dry run of it on my own and it took most of the day. The hills (for me) were tough. This past summer I did my first GFNY in Sweden and it was great but pretty flat. Looking forward to my next.
@smouvemouves10 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! You should definitely do this ride! The hills aren't bad at this event. There's 2 steeps climbs, but over all, it's small rolling hills throughout. I'm jealous that you got to do GFNY Sweden! I'd like to go back there someday and ride.
