thanks for this--and Sawallisch's Strauss is remarkable--but there is a better version of this masterpiece here on the net

Hunter is solid as usual but Nilsson’s voice is bigger with a more heroic steel in the timbre.
@delosmike20302 ай бұрын
The role of Sieglinde is mostly in the middle voice with a few memorable phrases in the upper regions. Nilsson took this on when Rysanek fell ill, and while she herself was singing Brunnhilde in other performances of the complete Ring. She of course is solid, but it's not a role that showed off what she could do best. There is one startling performance of SIEGFRIED from this season - the broadcast - where the years fell away. She was 57. It was the gleaming, youthful voice of the Solti recording. Startling singing - I wonder if she regarded it - as I certainly did - as one of those blessed occasions when everything aligns? Pavarotti famously said, "The number of evenings when you feel in absolutely wonderful voice and everything is working is maybe 3 times a year. And usually those evening happen on a night when you don't have a performance!"

Even just that first clip, any scepticism of Nilsson's abilities will be put to rest. It's not the volume, it's the quality: spot on pitch and forward motion musicallym
@Ernie12 ай бұрын
The voice itself is not particularly attractive. It's the volume and the easy facility above the staff that stands out.

Slow but not dragging. Highlight the rich texture of this piece. Though I understand her appoarch of imitating the train totally stop, the tempo at the end is way too slow to me.

Lorenz often frustrates me. The vocal material is first rate, but he often throws away smaller notes as if they don't exist, including the syllables connected with them! He also has a habit of scooping every 1st note of phrase from below, something Svanholm also did - in imitation of Lorenz, or a function of both of their training? It becomes very wearying to listen too when done so consistently. Anyway, thrilling to hear him in his close to prime voice, in good sound. Sieglinde doesn't give many opportunities for Teschemacher to show the glory of her voice, which is the top. But it's a thrilling sound when she's able to soar. I wonder when in 1944 this was recorded? Dresden was flattened by Allied bombings in February of 1945, and the studio or concert hall where this was recorded probably was destroyed at that time.

Perhaps my Nr1 hero of tenors. As a matter of fact, I listen most to Jussi B. There is something in his voice, that goes right into my heart, listen to him. And thank you youtube for all videos and to all people who broadcast all the songs. One thing, I don’t hear that he mention Victoria des Los Angeles, that is strange, because they sang so wonderful together. I wonder if JB and V de LA sang together on the Met? He must have had a serious nice honest personality. This is a real gem!
