Man you are a fantastic drummer! I love your re-creations of Neil’s work. You are one of the few that can do this music justice. I also read your other comment about “one continuous shot” when you record. I can’t thank you enough for making this your standard in playing this work with this in mind. I have always thought this IS the proper way to perform a Rush Drum Cover. You are just awesome man!

Thanks for the very kind words, I am glad you like my simple approach (not everyone does). I appreciate efficiency, and a single cam, continuous shot, though perhaps boring to some, is how I like to do it. I am certainly not what I would call a flashy drummer. YT is a hobby for me, and my channel is dedicated to a drum line buddy of mine that could no longer play due to serious health issues (he passed in recent years). I don’t receive a dime for any of my videos. I like watching how others interpret and play, and I like to share my interpretations and read feedback, both (mostly) positive and negative. Thanks for watching and commenting (and subbing)! Enjoy!

Thanks! A throwback for sure. This is the timeframe I really started getting into Genesis/Phil. I am not as familiar with the many Genesis albums prior to this one, though there is definitely some insane drumming on them! I didn’t have the money when I was younger to buy all the older albums of artists that I enjoyed, so I have knowledge/familiarity gaps when it comes to the earlier days of bands like Rush, Genesis, Yes, etc. Isn’t it great how music can instantly take us back? 👍🏻

Thanks so much! Most all songs I do, particularly Rush songs, I have listened to for many years, and sometimes played them before. I memorize them best I can, and of course never get them as good as I would like. I usually try to stick pretty close to what Neil played, but always fall short. I at very least try to play to the feel, even if I don't play exact note for note (I don't think I've ever played any song ever note for note). I have the full mix in my phones. I then mute the original drum track and mix in my own multi-track drum recording, attempting to get a similar drum sound. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays! Enjoy!
@curtisiain13 күн бұрын
How many hours practice to nail that?...great job!
@jon32513 күн бұрын
Thanks! Well, I have no idea the countless hours I've practiced/played over my lifetime. At this point, I've listened to some of these songs so many times over the years that I can sit down and pretty much play them on demand after a bit of warm up. I never, ever get them exactly how I want, because Neil is Neil and I never can seem to remember note for note with all his variety (I play all by ear), but I have to settle for what I consider "close enough". 🙂 I do these all with a continuous camera shot, in the same take, so I accept any mistakes that I always make. If I make what I consider too many mistakes, I start a new recording. I usually can get these within 2-3 takes. On rare occasion I am happy enough after the first take, but that is definitely the exception. Thanks for watching and commenting! Enjoy!

Super great song. You are the analog (sometimes digital) kid playing The Analog Kid. Seems that you've really fine tuned your mic'ing and drum sound. It sounds so close to the original that I'd never know the difference. Awesome vid J!
@jon32514 күн бұрын
Thanks bro! Yes, been taking extra time trying to hone my mixing. It's definitely the most time consuming part of my uploads. It's definitely challenging attempting to even come close to the original recording. When iTunes Match matches the song to the original (it did on this one) when I import it, I know I've come pretty close. 😀

Jon, you're really pumping out the content. My wife is a YT content creator, so I've got a close-up view of how difficult and consuming it can be. At some point, you WILL have a video break out and go viral. You deserve that, and I hope it happens soon. (Pro tip: thumbnail design is really important - far more so than we might've imagined)
@jon32515 күн бұрын
Thanks very much for the encouragement. I was sick for the last several months and physically couldn't play (it was literally too painful to play), so it's nice to be back at it again. This is a nice release for me from the stresses of life and work. If many others viewers get some away time to enjoy these videos, I'm happy with that. Sometimes it is curious when certain videos get lots of views compared to others. I want to think perhaps someone shares them where they get more visibility or something, but I have no idea. My Middletown Dreams video got many more views than typical, and I really have no idea why, LOL, but it's nice to see when so many enjoy. I don't make any money from these videos, it's all a hobby. The best part is when viewers like you comment and share their enjoyment. My wife also was a content creator years ago, and agreed, very much to do about the thumbnails. :) Thanks again for the feedback and support, I truly appreciate it. Enjoy!
@RoseBud24615 күн бұрын
I think some of what goes into higher views on some music videos is viewers like me, watching them many times each. I've done that with several musicians on YT. I must've watched the middletown dreams piece 20 times. Like I mentioned in one of the comments, "It was the right piece at the right time", and now YT has that in my "Mix" so when I'm working in the garage, it gets played on a rotation.

Great work, as always. I'm curious about a percussive sound at 1:57.5 I think it's on the original track because I didn't notice you creating it here. The sound I'm referring to sounds like a hard ball hitting a cement floor in an empty warehouse. I love it, it's quintessential 80's Rush, and I never could figure out how it was created or who did it in the live shows. Was it a sampled sound Geddy produced? I didn't see Neil make it. Do you know? Very curious. ✌️
@jon32522 күн бұрын
Thanks very much, again - appears it is a sample that Neil triggers (at least I have seen him trigger in live recordings of the song). You probably know this, but he had various small trigger pads in and around his acoustic kit, and he could also trigger samples with his left foot. I didn't have the sample on a pad like I do in some videos, so I just hit my china cymbal instead. :) The AI program I use (Moises) to separate the tracks must have placed that sound in a track other than the drum track, because like so many of my more recent videos, I pulled Neil's drum track (at least what Moises deemed as his drum track) out, but that sound is still present, as you noticed. I also love the industrial type sounds he would incorporate in his drumming. Enjoy!

As commented on other pieces of your work, the sound you've captured out of the kit, by the mic, and to media is a result rarely if ever equaled on KZbin, from what I've seen. It's special. I'm an amature live sound engineer. The rare moment everything jibes like this, I say to myself, "nobody move." And then I hold my breath till the moment passes.
@jon325Ай бұрын
Thanks very much for noticing, as mixing is definitely the longest part of making my videos. I have been slowly improving (I think) my recording and mixing skills (at least according to my ears), doing my best to save effects chains and templates to build things up quicker, or if I'm lucky, re-use what I've already done, with minimal changes. I am definitely an amateur when it comes to this stuff, but I try to use my ear and tweak stuff until it seems close enough to me. It's NEVER the same, to your point. I finally got mics for my acoustic kit about 18 months ago, and I'm definitely learning a lot. It's CRAZY how different I can make the same drum kit sound, even without any tuning changes. I've really been focusing lately on trying to get the sound as close as I can. I appreciate the kind words. Enjoy!
