Thanks for this! I also don't want to wade in to the replies on the other comment you made. What I want to say (and what I tried but not sure that I did in the video) is that I appreciate your opinion and see where you're coming from on the space on the page(s) dedicated to someone's sexuality or gender that you didn't feel was necessary and you would have rather had something else. For me, it was worthwhile enough, and that comes down to opinion. I also think the explanation you provided for the pandering (though I think that is too strong of a word) is valid, and honestly, if I were invested into a religion that had specific views that I did not espouse, and those views were brought to light in a vocal manner that had the potential to upset my readers (even though I do not espouse them), I would write certain passages to reflect my viewpoints as well. Sanderson puts a lot of his religious views into his books (though I've not researched this personally, just read posts/comments that make seemingly good arguments about this), so it would make sense for him to put his worldviews in as well, especially if they differ from the religion he subscribes to. When I focus back on how it felt to read these sections, it felt a little shoehorned in, but then, so did a lot of other plot points or character descriptions. All of that to say, your comments are welcome here on our channel, and I appreciate the discourse you bring forward even though I may disagree with your opinion. I hope you'll consider watching more of our stuff, because I like seeing discussions where people support their premises and opinions with valid arguments like I feel you've done here.

@ spoiler passed day two in this comment. real fast I just wanna be clear I didn’t really have an issue with the “woke” I would never bring it up in a conversation about the book I’m just saying it is there I loved every character story arc in this book. I don’t know what other word we could use other than pandering. Like salon being really invested and rolling in relationship, kind of felt like an audience insert or at least I’ve heard other people say that personally I like the way she reacted it seemed real to me. I think my only real point is those small parts are so unimportant. I can’t imagine anybody pointing them out in a review or remembering they were there at all. I mean you guys skipped over two of them.

@ again I really don’t wanna be seen as somebody that’s a against LGBTQ because I’m not. I just think people have a point when they point out how much woke pandering there is it really stops for most of the book I think there’s two at the beginning and two at the end. Again, if you wanna watch, my favorite show currently it is interview with a vampire. Im just saying woke stuff doesn’t bother me. I’m really trying hard not to come off as a bigot because I’m not even though I know a lot of people are gonna think I am because of my post.

I'm straight AF and I don't necessarily appreciate male gay sexuality. I will fully go through it when it makes sense to the plot and their characters. Not my gig but at the same time love is love, and if you cant live with it then move on and F off. lol
@mikehorner975Ай бұрын
I think the woke aspect comes from all the side characters telling us their sexuality . I think we had like 3 confirmed new sexuality things there’s Nani’s assistant, who is non-binary. We have the random trans man. And I don’t remember the third, but we got a third. Which means a whole page use for exposition that will never be useful again. And left has an entire paragraph about Dre he being gay just so that we know Dre he is gay and he is a character we need to know exist but that one I think is OK it went with the plot the other ones just halts the plot to tell me something that does not matter, think about all the sections of this book you think you could add a page too
@mikehorner975Ай бұрын
It is completely pandering two of the audience to say see I’m inclusive because he knows his religion is not.

The ending in regards to Kaladin was satisfying but I hate how he was written and his role in the story for the first 80% of it. We did not need to hear the words “therapy” and “therapist” so many times. Shallan was once again boring.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
I think taking into consideration Kaladin's whole journey, this was actually the first step of his into a new character arc, so I gave it some room to breathe and figure itself out, and realized even Kaladin's parts were really just Szeth's in disguise. I've typically found Shallan fairly exciting, though not my favorite. In this one, I found her parts way more interesting than some of the other POV characters. It's crazy how we can have such different ideas over the same book.
@darcy7257Ай бұрын
Spoilers My problem with Kaladin until like day 9, was that he had such a passive role and wasn’t really adding anything at all, if anything his character was trying to make the shinovar section less enjoyable. I thought Szeth’s POV’s were the most engaging part of the book, so we have Szeth chatting with nightblood, chatting with Syl, chatting with his soren, fighting zombies with honourblades then in the background Kaladin is going “hey Szeth, how are you feeling?” “Hey szeth, you should stop doing this” and I’m going no no no Kaladin stop let Szeth continue to be awesome. My problem with Shallan largely stems from being a certified hater of the multiple personalities since oathbringer, but what I disliked about this book specifically is frankly how competent she was in terms of her goal for the book. I don’t think she should have done so well against *two* ghostbloods. Was it really that easy for her to take on Iyatil and Mraise by herself? I had hoped with the Kalak interlude that the ghostbloods were actually gonna be competent this book, especially after lost metal but I guess the Rosharan sector just sucks. Did Shallan even have any negative consequences from this book besides the ending being trapped in shadesmare? Which wasn’t her fault anyway. She did better than any of the other main characters in the story besides renarin and rlain I guess.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
I see. I look at these things as acceptable given how the characters have grown. I definitely understand where you're coming from, though. I'm more curious to see how Sanderson shapes Mistborn Era 3 based on which characters did what in Wind and Truth than I am disappointed in how character arcs ended, if that makes sense.

this was a TERRIBLE book and a HORRENDOUS ending to the first part of the Cosmere. Sanderson fans. Why is it that he can only ever use the same plotline? "city under seige" or "besieging a city" he did it 3 times in this book alone and he's done it in every other book. Shallan - it's the exact same story from last time. Dalinar it's the same thing he's been through 3 times now. Kalladin - Do I need to explain how he's had this exact plot multiple times? Adolin - Daddy issues for 5 freaking books! Jasnah - absolutely identical plots multiple times. the only things that were 'new' were Renarin and Rlain - and all that ended up being was the same romance plot that was Shallan and Adolin from book 2! this is a horrible book, and if you say anything other than that, you're ignoring everything I've just said and screaming "shut up" rather than addressing that Sanderson ran out of plotlines around the end of Hero of Ages and has been recycling things ever since.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
I see where you're coming from for a lot of this, but I also disagree that the characters had the same arcs in previous books. I guess I think it was different enough by the end.
@UncensoredScionАй бұрын
@@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmere that's a fair argument, you've not dismissed my point. And rather than quibble over the differences I think we can both agree there are a "similarities" each time.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
There definitely were similarities. From my view of it, it felt like he took those similarities and said, "they've done a lot of the same work each time, yes, but I promise this is where they finally earn their finale and grow past repeating the arc." (I've had to repeat a lot of the same life lessons for them to finally change me, so it feels realistic.) In future books, I expect we won't see the same character arcs for the same characters that earned their growth this time. I'll also agree he tends to have a lot of repeated elements among stories. For me, the differences are enough to make them worthwhile. I can see, however, where they may not be different enough for others. Not a lot of his other books focused on forgiveness, as this one did, for an example.
@UncensoredScionАй бұрын
@@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmere I'm glad you can still find something good in it. But I was hanging by a thread with that Marasi plotline from Lost Metal being the same thing as Shallan's from Rhythm of War just from the side of working with the Ghostbloods. It annoyed me immensely. then practically all of the plots for each character felt very much like the same thing they'd been over before and while realistic to have trauma need to be revisited, it doesn't work for narrative fiction. At the end of this book I said I was done. I've dropped all his books now. All of the first half is done, I don't need to see the end. It won't bother me to walk away as I will have the "we're going to see the same exact plot again aren't we?" in the back of my head for anything else and it'll sour my view and I'll end up just being an ass about it to fans who enjoy it. I hope I'm wrong, I'll read summaries as the new books come out, and maybe when Mistborn era 3 is done I'll try one of them. But if I were to put it down in words, I'd say I feel let down by this ending, it has been built up massively and ended felt a damp squib for me. I expected better out of a guy who can do good fantasy when he tries and this doesn't feel like him trying. I've said it for a while, he needs to take 2 or 3 years of not writing to recharge his creativity as it's severely lacking now. At least in my opinion.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
I think your analysis is solid, and I'm glad you're able to put it in a concise manner. I think your opinions are valid, and I won't say I'm 100% satisfied by the ending of this book. It's also a breath of fresh air to see someone state what you have, with "I'll sour my view and end up being an ass to fans who enjoy it." I'm hoping Ghostbloods brings in a new wind in terms of creativity, and from what we've heard I personally expect that it will. I will say that Sanderson's writing style of Lost Metal and Wind and Truth has not grabbed me as Era 1 and Way of Kings/Words of Radiance did.
@danl455Ай бұрын
To much woke shit. Still listening but 100% pulls me out of the story. It feels so forced.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
I'd respectfully disagree on the basis of it being forced. He's telegraphed the gay romance for a while now, which is the largest part of what may be considered woke in my opinion. The other parts that are relevant to transgender people are small additions that, to me, make the world seem more fleshed out. ***spoilers for a later portion of the story*** the part where Adolin accepts a person who has Azish credentials to live as a man was a brilliant way to communicate "this kind of person exists in the Cosmere, and here's world building that reflects that", but again, my opinion. While I am a straight male, I have written many characters for my own stories, and to be 100% honest with you, the way I do that feels odd. The character decides their sexuality, gender, religion, etc., and I simply don't interfere. If it's what is right for the story, then I continue that character in the story, and if it isn't right, I remove that character. From Sanderson's lectures on writing, he does something similar. So, for a lot of Wind and Truth, the portions that some may consider woke (which I'm not arguing aren't, though I don't use "woke" myself) don't feel forced to me. If the character is this, that, or the other, and you're writing from that character's point of view, then I suspect they would consciously think about how they're this, that, or the other. Some of the humor does feel forced, and that pulls me out more than the woke parts.

RoW and WaT editing feels different. Huge downgrade. Idk what it is. Prose has never been Sanderson's strong suit but it felt very YAish. Modern word usage broke immersion for me. Characters, action and plot was still very good. Just the writing itself in these kast two books has been worse. I loved TWOK because his writing felt more mature over, say, mistborn.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
I can agree with this and can offer two explanations. One: new editor. Moshe retired, and we could maybe expect that the new editor isn't as hard on Sanderson to keep the language more mature. Two: Sanderson is intentionally bringing a medieval story to the present much faster than he did Mistborn, where 300 years passed between Hero of Ages and Alloy of Law, so more modern language is expected in Alloy of Law. He wants Roshar to get closer to that level of advancement faster because of how Stormlight 6-10 and the rest of the Cosmere book will align. A third explanation may be that he really had the time and space to write a more mature sounding story with the Way of Kings. To me, more mature writing equates to more descriptive writing and humorous moments that don't rely on toilet humor. With the Way of Kings, Sanderson took the time to describe non-vital parts of what was going on, where RoW and WaT the opportunity to do had collapsed in on itself because the plot and everything he needed to do took precedence.
@undbiter65Ай бұрын
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmere I did not know about new editor. And that makes a lot of sense. A new editor who doesn't have as long as a relationship with BS and who started working with him once he was this massive author, I can see them being less pushy on some editing quibbles. I hope we get some TWOK -Oathbringer Sanderson back. I agreed almost completely with your review. Subbed.
@SilverlightGuidetotheCosmereАй бұрын
I'd also like to see some TWOK-OB back, and we might get that with Stormlight 6 and 7. I can also appreciate the fact that Sanderson may be trying to show explicitly that he is not a grimdark, "epic fantasy must be so serious" writer, and this is how he chooses to do that. The jokes are not for me, haven't been since The Lost Metal. But, it's at the level that I can easily look past it. I much prefer the type of joke like Wax and Wayne going through a list of ridiculously named operations trying to figure out how to get in the enemy base, not calling someone a bag of d****. Feels like it is a cheap laugh, which are okay once in a while, and I think they're spread out enough in WaT that I can accept them. I'm going to be more critical in the spoiler review, as I have more takes on how certain characters developed and how reveals were handled, but like I stated in the video that will take a while to come out. Thanks for subbing!

I actually really liked the choice to include a more intimate scene. I think it showed a lot of character development. This wasn't sexy, and it wasn't meant to be. It was a moment between two young characters who are newly married and have been constantly at war. This is the calm right before the storm. Shallan has never been honest with anyone, ever. And Adolin knows everything. Showing them in a more intimate setting is symbolic of that vulnerability. I've never really felt invested in Shallan and Adolin's relationship because it felt juvenile to me, like they had a crush on each other and then suddenly they were married. This was a very tasteful picture of what their relationship looks like outside of the pages. I've read romantasy, this isn't that. I'd be completely comfortable letting a teenager read that scene.
